It was assumed her last name is STINNETT, based on Malinda Stinnett, "Aunt", living with James and Dezzie in 1900. This was verified by obtaining the social security application of her son, Amos Buryle McLemore.

Published in The Alabama Courier, Athens, AL, Thursday, January 20, 1949

Mrs. J. R. McLemore, age 79, of Athens Route 5, died at her late residence on Tuesday, January 18, at 11 a.m. Brother E. F. Bullington will officiate today (Thursday) 11 a.m. from Mt. Carmel Church. Interment will follow in the City Cemetery, Spry in charge.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, A. B. McLemore of Oak Ridge, Fred McLemore of Athens Route 5, and Carlos McLemore of Detroit; two daughters, Mrs. Lena Dudley of Detroit and Mrs. Louis Elledge, Tuscaloosa; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were M. C. Nichols, Fate Ball, Clydas McLemore, Home McLemore, Louis Brooks Jr., and Melvin Cox.

She was preceded in death by one son, Herbert McLemore who died October 18, 1918 in England.

On this registration card for the World War I draft, his middle name was spelled Burrel, and he instead listed his date of birth as September 3, 1900. He was farming for his father, J. R. McLemore, and listed his nearest relative as his mother, Dessie McLemore of Athens. He was of medium heighth, slender and had brown eyes and red hair. The application was completed on September 12, 1918.

When he completed his application for a social security account in 1936, he was unemployed, and living on Route #5 in Athens, Alabama.

He had a military marker, inscribed:

In the 1949 obituary of her father, she was listed as "Mrs. Louis Elledge of Tuscumbia." Her mother's obituary, published about eight weeks earlier, instead show her as "Mrs. Louis Elledge, Tuscaloosa."

Notes:

Unable to locate him on either the 1920 or 1930 census with his parents and siblings. However, the 1949 obituaries of both his parents, found on their FindAGrave memorial pages, both list a son, Carlos McLemore of Detroit.

At the time of the 1940 census, he was a resident of Detroit, Michigan, a boarder in the home of Jno. McKennon of Michigan, and listed as Carlos McLemore,age 29, born in Alabama, working as a bell boy at Joliet?. He had resided in Athens, Alabama five years previously.
