    McLemore Burying Ground, Montgomery, Alabama

    From DAR records 1936

The McLemore Burying Ground is about one mile off the Montgomery -Atlanta
Highway to the right facing east, and is about five miles from Montgomery.
It is on a knoll behind the old James McLemore home built about 1820. In
1936 Mrs. Lizzie Taylor Dickerson occupied it. A low brick wall and
iron fence surrounds the lot. Outside the main cemetery is another smaller
one, also enclosed. There are graves of slaves and faithful servants, mostly
unmarked outside all enclousures. Graves listed begin at the southwest
    corner of the plot.

Anderson McLemore died December 1, 1896. Mr. McLemore was born in the state of Georgia, October 3, 1818. He professed religion and joined the Methodist Church and was made a Mason about the same time in Chambers County, Alabama, from where he moved, sometimes in the forties, to Arkansas, carrying with him love for the church and Masonry. He was happily married three times, his first wife having been Miss Jane Ward (sic) of Alabama; his second wife, Miss S. B. Holderness, of Arkansas; and his last, who survived him, Mrs. S. P. Williams, Nee Miss Ashcroft. Twelve children were born to the deceased; five by the first wife, three by the second wife, and four by the third wife, but only four of these children are living - one of the first and three of the last family. Mr. Anderson first came to Hopkins County, Texas, in 1863, returning to Arkansas just after the late war, but finally coming back to Hopkins County in 1869, since which time and until his death he as been a resident of this county, having made his home for the past few years of his life in Sulphur Springs.

Melba Gene McLemore found a book titled "Proceedings of the Fifty-Ninth Annual Sessio of the Alabama Baptist Association," which recorded the activities of the delegates from the churches that met at the church at Pine Level, Montgomery county, at 11 o'clock on Friday, October 11, 1878. Eld. McQueen presented the report of the Committee on Documents, and included in this report was that "Elim church (Montgomery county) reports the death of Deacon Moses McLemore." (page 7). A few pages later, in a report on obituaries "Since the last session of this body, four of the faithful workers in the Master's cause-Deacons R. H. Lee, Thomas W. Dunklin, F. L. Ellis, and Moses McLemore-have left our ranks for a purer clime. They have finished the work assigned them to do on the earth, and their light spirits have taken "homeward flight" to the land of rest. These all died in the faith, as they had lived, and haivng "used the office of Deason well," have "purchased to themselves a "good degree and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus." "Blessed are the deat that die in the Lord, yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors."

Resolved, first, that we bow in humble submission to this dispensation of God's providence...

Resolved, second, that we tender our heartfelt sympathies to the families of our lamented brethren, praying that the smiles of Heavan may settle on them.

    Respectfully submitted,
    B. A. Jackson, Chm'n

(Medical):A direct male descendant, still bearing the McLemore surname, participated in the Morrison yDNA study. He was predicted to be in the R1a haplogroup, common in many parts of Eurasia and Scandanavia. However, he does not currently have any matches among the other 15 members with the McLemore surname in the study. It is possible that there were several founding McLemore lines, instead of just one as has been long assumed. Or another possibility could be that undisclosed adoptions have occurred through the generations of descendants of both James and/or Abraham.

This grandmother was widowed after the Civil War. I have a newspaper clipping stating that her husband, William H. DARNELL died in 1866. She had another child (of doubtful parentage) in 1873. Her obituary (1919) states explicitly that Mr. Darnell died in 1873. She later remarried a COOPER and died in Oklahoma."

Research of my son-in-law's lineage leads to Mary A. McLemore, 7-23-1843 Shelby Co., TX, to 5-22-1919 Weatherford, Custer Co., OK.

She is identified by records as a daughter of W. Adkin McLemore, c1806 GA to 2-16-1881 Shelby Co., TX, and Susan A. Brinson, c1817 GA to bef1870 Shelby Co., TX. She had 4 known siblings - Matthew William, James S., Elizabeth M. [???] and John T. McLemore.

Family oral tradition and photographs identify Native American lineage in Mary and any help would be appreciated with McLemore family history to identify this line.

Interview with Callie Williams -Mary A. Poole, Mobile

    PATTEROLLERS USED SHACKLES, SAYS CALLIE

Callie Williams was only four years old at the time of the surrender, but stories told to her by her mother are vividly remembered, and the fact that she has had the same environment continously throughout the years imprinted these happenings permanently on her mind. She lives at 504 Eslava Street, Mobile.

"My mammy and pappy was brought to Alabama by specalators who sold 'em to Mr. Hiram McLemore at Newport Landing, on de Alabama ribber," Callie said. "Mammy's name was Vicey and she was born in Virginia, but my pappy was born in Kentucky. His name was Harry. Mr. McLemore had about three hundred head of slaves, some of 'em on one plantation of about two thousand acres an' de res' on another place of about five hundred acres. He sho' did have a pretty house. It was all white and ramblin-like and had big trees aroun' it. Dere was a cool well and a big dairy right close by it and den de cabins was all in a row in de back, some of 'em made out of planks, but mos' of 'em was made wid logs. Dey was all named after whoever lived in 'em."

Aunt Callie needed little urging to tell of the old days, and she claims to vividly remember her master's family.

"His wife was named Axie Bethea and he had seven children," she said.

"One of 'em I never will forget, Miss Julia, 'case she gimme de first calico dress I ever had and I was proud as a peacock wid it. Miss Julia was de oldest little girl and dey give me to her.

"My mammy say dat dey waked up in de mornin' when dey heard de sweep. Dat was a piece of iron hangin' by a string and it made a loud noise when it was banged wid another piece of iron. Dey had to get up at four o'clock and be at work by sunup. To do dis, dey mos' all de time cook breakfast de night befo'.

"Pappy was a driver under de overseer, but mammy say dat she stay at de little nursery cabin and look after all de little babies. Dey had a cabin fixed up with homemade cradles and things where dey put all de babies. Der mammies would come in from de field about ten o'clock to nurse 'em and den later in de day, my mammy would feed de youngest on pot-licker and de older ones on greens and pot-licker. Dey had skimmed milk and mush, too, and all of 'em stayed as fat as a butter balls, me among 'em. Mammy saw dat I always got my share.

"De slaves got rations every Monday night. Dere would be three pounds of meat and a peck of meal. Dere was a big garden dat all of 'em worked and dey had all de vegetables dey needed and dere was always plenty of skimmed milk. Dey cooked de meals on open fireplaces in de big iron 'spiders.' Dem was big pots hangin' over the fire from a hook. Dey do de cookin' at night and den warm it over the nex' day if dey wanted it dat way.

"While mammy was tendin' de babies she had to spin cotton and she was supposed to spin two 'cuts' a day. Four 'cuts' was a hard day's work. What was a cut? You oughta' know dat! Dey had a reel and when it had spun three hundred yards it popped. Dat was a "cut." When it had been spun, den another woman took it to de loom to make cloth for de slaves. Dey always took Saturday afternoon to clean up de clothes and cabins, 'case dey always had to start work on Monday mornin' clean as a pin. If dey didn't, dey got whupped for bein' dirty.

"Some of de niggers, after dey'd been beat, would try to run away and some of 'em got loose, but de patterollers caught a lot of 'em and den dey'd get it harder dan ever befo' and have shackles out on dere feet wid jes' enough slack for 'em to walk so dey could work.

"If dey wanted to go 'possum huntin' or fishin', dey could get passes from de overseer. Two things dey really loved to eat was 'possum and fish. Dey'd eat and eat 'till dey'd get sick and den dey'd have to boil up a dose of Boneset tea to work 'em out. If dat didn't make 'em feel better, dey'd go to Marster. He always kept calomel, bluemas and quinine on hand. If dey got too bad off sick, den marster would call de doctor. De children wasn't bothered with nothin' much but worms and dey'd take Jerusalem oak. It was de seed of a weed dat cook' and mix' 'lasses to make it taste like candy. Boneset was a bush and dey'd boil de leaves to get boneset tea.

"Mos' of de time de slaves would be too tired to do anything but go to bed at night, but sometimes dey would set around and sing after supper and dey would sing and pray on Sunday. One of de songs dat was used mos' was 'Yon Comes Old Marster Jesus.' If I remembers rightly, it went somp'n' like dis:

I really believe Christ is comin' again
    He's comin' in de mornin'
    He's comin' in de mornin'
He's comin' wid a rainbow on his shoulder
He's comin' again bye and bye.

"Dey tried to make 'em stop singin' and prayin' durin' de war, 'case all dey'd ask for was to be sot free, but de slaves would get in de cabins and turn a big wash pot upside down and sing into dat, and de noise couldn't get out. I don't remember nothin' about dis ceptin' what mammy say.

"When de Surrender come, she say dat a whole regiment of soldiers rode up to de house yellin' to de niggers dat dey was free. Den de soldiers took de meat out of de smokehouse and got all de 'lasses and meal and give it all to de niggers. Dey robbed de bees and den dey eat dinner and go on to de nex' place, takin' de menfolks wid 'em, all 'ceptin' de ones too old, my pappy among 'em.

"After it was all over my pappy rented land on Mr. McLemore's place and he and mammy stayed dere till dey died. Dey was buried in de same graveyard dat Mr. McLemore had set aside for his slaves. I married Frank Williams in Montgomery, Alabama, but our marriage was nothin' like mammy say her and pappy's was. She say dey 'jumped de broom stick.' When any of de slaves wanted to get married dey would go to de big house and tell marster and he'd get his broomstick and say, 'Harry, does you want Vicey?' And Harry would say 'yes.' Den Marster would say, 'Vicey, does you want Harry?', and she say 'yes.' Den marster say, 'Jine hands and jump de broomstick and you is married. De ceremony wasn't much but dey stuck lots closer den, and you didn't hear about so many divorces and such as dat.

"All my children is dead but two. I had five. One is livin' in Atlantic City, N.J., and I live here wid de other one. I 'spects I'll jes' go on livin' here 'till I die, serving Ole Marster as bes' I can. If all de peoples on dis here earth would do dat, we wouldn't be pestered wid all dese here troubles like we is nowadays.

    Notes:

James Strain notes that: In the petition to sell the land of Jesse Edwards by his son and administrator, William Edwards, dated 8th Dec, 1836, his heirs are listed. It includes the following statement:

"And the children of Martha McLemore, deceased, wife of Moses McLemore, towit: Rebecca Williams wife of Pinckney Williams, who is a minor, and Martha McLemore, a minor under 14 years of age."

Apparently, Rebecca was married before reaching the age of 21, so still considered a minor, but her sister, Martha, was under 14 on this date.

It seems either his mother's birthdate, or his birth and death dates, (listed above) must be in error as it is unlikely she was only 11 when she gave birth.

Another transcription of these records, below, show his year of death as 1841, a more likely year

My husband didn't know that they were sisters he just knew that they lived together and were elderly."

    Notes:

From Memorial Record of Alabama (a book) published in 1893.

"MOSES McLEMORE, a prominent planter of Montgomery county, was born in this county in 1857. He is a son of Andrew J. and Sarah C. (Smith) McLemore, the former native of Jones county, Ga., the latter of Orangeburgh district, S. C. Andrew J. McLemore came with his parents to Alabama about 1820, received a common school education, and married Margaret Caffey, who died leaving three daughters. In 1854 Mr. Mclemore married again, and spent the rest of his life in the vicinity of Moses McLemore's present home. He owned a fine plantation, and negroes, was never in public life nor performed any military service. He was well read and had a large fund of information. He was for many years a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and died in 1870, aged fifty-five. His father was the Rev. James McLemore, a Missionary Baptist Minister, who came from Georgia to Alabama about 1820, and followed the ministry in this state for many years. He is said to have built the first church in Montgomery county. He was a Virginian by birth, and died before Moses McLemore was born, greatly loved by his people. His wife survived him by a number of years. She was an energetic woman, and attended the plantation affairs very successfully. They raised a large family of sons and daughters, only two of the daughters now surviving [ca.1893]. The mother of Moses McLemore is still living. She is a daughter of Jacob and Mary Smith, natives of South Carolina, where they lived all their lives. Mrs. McLemore came to Alabama with an uncle, Daniel Rast, who settled in Lowndes. She is the mother of four Children, viz.: Mary, Moses, Laura A. and Sterling Price. Moses was educated at the county schools and at Montgomery, and at the age of seventeen began life for himself as a farmer. He married, in 1890, Annie Benom Tanner, daughter of L. H. and Ophelia A. Tanner, who came from Georgia to Alabama. Mr. Tanner died at Union Springs, and Mrs. Tanner is still living. Mrs. McLemore was born in Tuskegee, Ala. Mr. McLemore is one of the leading farmers in the county, owning 2,900 acres of fine farming land. He has followed farming all his life, and for some years he also carried on merchandising, and ran a cotton gin. When he started in life he had but a few hundred dollars, inherited from his father's estate; now he is worth many thousands of dollars, all of which, with the exception just mentioned, he has aquired by his own industry and economy."

Pioneer Resident of County is Dead

Moses McLemore of Mitylene, Leading Citizen for Years, Passes Saturday

Moses McLemore, of Mitylene one of the leading citizens of Montgomery county, died Saturday afternoon at ? 30 o'clock at a local infirmary. Mr. McLemore had been in declining health for some months and in February grew rapidly worse, and he was brought to Montgomery for treatment. Saturday an operation was resorted to in a last attempt to prolong his life, but in vain. Members of the family were at his bedside when the end came.

The McLemores were a pioneer Montgomery family. They came to this county and settled on the rich farming lands in the famous old Mount Meigs vicinity 100 years ago. Always they have followed agriculture and with marked success. Moses McLemore, who was 63 years old at his death, had been born and reared on the family plantation on which he resided and which he operated for the whole of his life. He never lived elsewhere. He had long been recognized as one of the most successful planters in Middle Alabama. He was a gentleman of fine personal qualities and universally popular. He was a tender and devoted husband and father and a farmer who found the soil and its products a source of never-ending pleasure. The McLemore residence is one of the prettiest country places in Montgomery county. The numerous Montgomery friends of the family were frequently entertained within its hospitable walls. The dead planter is survived by his wife and three sons: A. J. McLemore, K T McLemore, and Price McLemore, all of Mitylene, and four daughters, Mrs. H. W. Walker of Millstead, Miss Alidah McLemore, Miss Cherita McLemore and Jane McLemore of Mitylene, and by two sisters, Miss Mary McLemore and Miss Adele McLemore, of Montgomery.

Funeral services will take place from the residence on the Mot. Meigs Road Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Dr. Charles A. Blakely of the First Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood.

    Obituary

Death closed the life of Sterling Price McLemore on February 16, 1910.

His devotoing to his aged mother was beautiful and sacred.

To his sisters, he was ever kind and considerate.

All who knew him in life mourned his passing away in his forty-eighth year.

He had many qualities that endeared him to those who knew him.

He was symphathetic, he was just; he was both gentle and strong.

Altho' he had reached middle life, he had not grown old.

The same qualities that drew us to the boy were to be found in the man.

The home he has left is a monument to his loving providence for his dear ones.

The emptiness of this home yawns for those who leaned on him so confidingly. Little children loved him because in him they had a friend.

Life at its longest is but short. A rosy dawn, a golden moon, then a dusk stealing slowly o'er, or like a black could driven by a wind envelopes all this glory and Life'd Day is closed.

He was a grandson of James McLemore, one of the founders of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery County.

He has passed his life near the ancestral home established in 1813.
