It has been a long time since we visited. I have been diligently looking for Mary Neely who married Lorenzo Dow McGrew, Sr. At last, I have come across the link I needed. Now, you all may be way ahead of me, and if so, please tell me you already have all of this. In any event, here is what I have:

Mary Neely was the daughter of Margaret Murphy and Samuel Neely.

Here is an brief family outline:

Mary M. Neely married L. D. McGrew.

About Mary Crow --- she was from MS, possibly Monroe County, then the family moved to Hardeman County, TN. She died there.

John then moved to Texas, about 1833, and married Claressa (Clarissy Neely), about 1833. They settled in San Augustine County, had more children, and died there.

I haven't had an opportunity to research San Augustine County, but will asap.

This information came from James L. Murphy of TN. He has been looking for the Mary Neely connection to his family but the records indicated she married an "L.D. Magee". The birthdates are a perfect match.

Wynema McGrew had listed her as a daughter of John and Claricy (second wife) NEELEY, born 3 Jul 1826 in TN/AL.

Mary married Lorenzo Dow McGrew about 1850 in Sabine County, Texas. Lorenzo (son of Alexander McGrew and Elizabeth Blackburn) was born on 15 Oct 1828 in Marion County, Mississippi; died on 25 Feb 1885 in Lavaca County, Texas; was buried in Pilot Grove Cemetery, Yoakum, Lavaca County, Texas. Notes:

Per "The Southern McGrews Grew" he was a farmer, and drove cattle along the Chisholm Trail. Wynema McGrew writes that he was also an old time Texas lawman and marshal. He died of a bad heart and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Yoakum, Texas. He and Frances and their three children were living with his parents at the time of the 1880 census.

Notes:

Wynema McGrew wrote that Lorenzo Dow Jr had bene sentenced to 10 years in prison for a murder. He had worked as a bar tendger during the gold rush in Alaska and killed a man in a fight in Klondike. He served 14 months of his sentence in Alaska, being returned to Texas around 1899 or 1900.

His Texas death certificate indicates he was married and a resident of Lavaca. He died at the San Antonio State hospital, and his occupation was shown as carpenter. His body was returned to Yoakum for burial.

When he registered for the draft during the First World War, he was farming in Yoakum. His employer was listed as J. H. McGrew, his father. He was tall and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Wynema McGrew noted that "in 1898 Martha H. Goode petitioned the Lavaca County Court for the guardianship of Oscar L since his mother was dead and his father in jail."

His Texas Death Certificate shows he was married, and worked for a contractor. His middle name was shown as Lee versus Lorenzo, and his mother was listed as Eva Jones versus Eva/Evie Goode. At the time of the 1900 census, Oscar lived with his grandmother, Martha Goode. Perhaps the death certificate was in error, or either his mother or grandmother had been married more than once.

The March 6, 1927 edition of the San Antonio Express News, page 19, in their Yoakum column, noted that the literary and debating society of Baldwin's Business College held a program discussing salesmanship. Speakers were Henry Pospisal, Hardy Bridgeforth, Rosa Lee Cannon, Hugo Striebel, Wilburn Polka and Daisy McGrew.

Mrs. Daisy Lawrence was the informant on the death certificate of her sister, Alice McGrew Hyde in 1970.

On her own death certificate, dated 1976, her occupation was shown as that of a Teacher in the Aldine School District. The informant was George W. Lawrence, her husband.

Had three children, John Dee, Timothy, and Alma Kuehn.
