    Was shown on the muster roll of Captain J.M. Burroughs Company of the Sabine County Volunteer Infantry, CSA, and was enlisted at Hemphill, Texas by Drury Field for 3 months duty on January 15, 1863. He died on the way home from Galveston after the Civil War. (White and Toole)

    Elbert J. Hines Rites in Laredo

    Elbert Jessie Hines, 91, 520 S. Harlandale, died at his home Friday. He was a native of Hemphill, but had resided in this city for 14 years.

    He is survived by three sons, S. R. Hines of San Antonio, A. A. Hines of Laredo and C. C. Hines of Flint, Mich.; and five daughters, Mrs. W. E. Smith of Fort Worth, Mrs. Mattie Mellon of Refugio, Mrs. T. C. Grimes of Mission, and Mrs. Ruth Richter and Mrs. Alice Carpenter, both of San Antonio.

    The body was sent Saturday to Lareod, for services and interment in that city.

    LaDarla Walker Keith posted that she married James Madison CONNER, son of Lewis Conner and Martha Ann Weeks. She stated that Amanda and James homesteaded in DeBeca/Roosevelt County, New Mexico before returning to Wise County, Texas. They had three sons, one of them being her grandfather.

In her sketch about Lee Smith of Sabine County, Virgie Speights notes that one of his teachers at the one room log school at Beach Grove was J. P Alford, who taught alongside Miss Belle Smith, Clint Arthur, and Miss Mattine Hines. (Speights, Old Timers of Sabine County, p. 26).
