"Sixty Three Years of Married Life on the West Texas Plains" by Nora GENTRY LOCKLIN, September 1987, McCamey, Texas: "My father, David Simon Gentry, 'Papa', died August 6, 1926, in Scott and White Hospital at Temple, Texas, with a tumor on his brain. Sam Holmes and I were with him. He had fierce headaches all summer and was in the Shannon Hospital in Sasn Angelo. We took a Pullman car on the Santa Fe railroad. I knew he was worse whin we got to Brownwood. His death was a blow to me. He was buried in the Sherwood Cemetery by Alvin, my brother." "Papa was elected County Tax-Assessor and collector (Irion County) in 1914. Myrtle and I had to help him make up the Tax Assessor's roll during the summer vacation....Papa was elected County Judge in 1922. He served two years as County Judge and six years as Tax-Assessor."
"A History of Irion County Texas", Irion County Historical Society, published by Anchor Publishing Company, San Angelo, Texas: - Article by daughter Nora: "David Simon Gentry was born 30 June 1874 in Grayson County, Texas. His family moved to Mills County, Texas and he attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood. He married Maude Mae Tyson, another HPC student, in 1894. After the marriage Dave helped his father, J A Gentry run a livery stable and wagon yard in Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas." "In 1902, J A Gentry homsteaded four sections in Reagan County and as he wished Dave to be near him, Dave bought a half section of unimproved land at Arden in Irion County. He and a hired hand drove a covered wagon to Sam Angelo and bought supplies and lumber to build a one room house on the land."
"In January 1906, the Gentry family: wife, Maude, daughters Myrtle and Nora, and son Alvin, joined Dave in his pioneer home. The family traveled by the Santa Fe Railroad from Mullin to San Angelo. There Dave met the wife and children in a wagon with a team of horses as there were many more supplies to be bought and carried to their home fifteen miles away." "In May 1906 another girl, Ilene, was added to the pioneer family. Doctor Williams came in his buggy from Sherwood, fifteen files away, to deliver the baby. The neighbor women helped the Gentry couple during this time. After one year and making a good crop on the farm, Dave realized that he was too far, three miles, from school, so he sold the land in 1906 and bought a house in Sherwood, and an irrigated farm in Spring Creek." "January 1907, Myrtle, Nora and Alvin began school in Sherwood." "A baby boy, Tyson, came to the Gentry family in July 1909." "All five Gentry children graduated from Sherwood High School and attended colleges. Dave always said that he wanted five High School Diplomas and would like very much to have five college ones also. Alvin died at college in Abilene, December 1918, during the World War I flu epidemic." "Dave was elected Irion County Tax-Assessor in 1915 and served until 1922. Myrtle and Nora helped him make up the tax roll in the hot summer months during vacation. The office was on the west side of the courthouse and there was no air-conditioning nor ice." "1923, Dave was elected County Judge. He died in August 1926. His children have each lived a productive life as was his ambition."
"Mrs Maude (TYSON) GENTRY was ninety-one when she passed away and was active in church and civic affairs up to the time of her death."

From Texas Highways, October 1994, Speaking of Texas
In the early 1920's Frank Pickrell, vice president and general manager of Texon Oil and Land Company, found that nobody wanted to buy an oil lease in Reagan County. Though there was no sign of oil in the county, Pickrell and others were convinced it was there for the taking. The plan was to drill a "wildcat" oil well in hopes of making the venture more attractive to investors. Pickrell traveled to New York to try to raise money for his scheme. The potential backers included a Catholic women's society. Hesitant about investing, the women consulted their priest, who suggested they ask Santa Rita, patron saint of the impossible and hopeless, for guidance. They did so, decided to invest, and gave the priest an envelope full of dried rose petals. The priest blessed the petals, then gave them to Pickrell with instructions from the women to sprinkle them over the proposed drilling site. When Pickrell returned to the site, on University of Texas land between Big Lake and Rankin, he climbed to the top of the derrick as directed, crumbled the rose petals into the breeze, and declared, "I christen thee Santa Rita." The Santa Rita gusher blew in on May 28, 1923, providing the University of Texas with unexpected wealth. Of the adults who watched the liquid gold begin to flow, 96-year-old Nora Locklin of Knickerbocker, whose husband, Dee, worked for the driller, is the only living witness. --- Barbara Barton, Knickerbocker.
