    Notes:

    Emil was a trucker for several years, owned and operated a restaurant, and did carpenter work for many people. He and his brother Bill built various dwellings around the community. He was one of the first volunteer firemen and served the town of Milligan for 68 years. He was a charter member of the Knight of Pythias and a member of the ZCBJ Lodge. His nickname was "Skelly."     Notes:

    Emil graduated from Milligan High School in 1935. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 2, 1936. While in the service, he married Blanche Herynk in Long Beach, California. He was discharged in March, 1940 and worked in the shipyards until being recalled into the Navy during World War II. After the war, Emil resumed employment in the shipyards. He later worked as a purchasing agent of the Long Beach Hospital. His final employer was the Shell Oil Company in Wilmington, California. Emil retired from Shell in June, 1979. Blanche and Emil enjoy their sons and daughter-in-law and also their three granddaughters: Gary's daughter Cherise who is twelve and Richard and Kathy's daughters: Lindsey, seven and Kelly, four (all as of 1988).     Notes:

    Donald graduated from Milligan Public School in 1938, after which he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (1940-1942). He was drafted into the U.S. Army, and was stationed overseas in the European Theatres of Ardennes, Normandy and Rhineland. He was a special vehicle operator. After returning from the service, he operated a filling station in Milligan. He later was employed at Barstow Elevator. In 1958, Don and Helen moved to Exeter where he was employed as a bookkeeper for Co-op Elevators. His final position was as an employee of Jacobsens' Trucking in Fairmont. (Milligan, p 290).

    Havel -- Donald R. "Mick," 78, Milligan, died Thursday (4/27/00) in Lincoln. Born, Milligan. Veteran, WWII.

    Survivors: wife, Helen; daughter, Norene Fitzgerald, Exeter; sisters, Sister M. Frances Ann Havel, Grand Island, Virgie Smith, Lincoln; four step-grandchildren; nieces, nephews.

    Cremation, no services. Burial of ashes at a later date. No visitation. Memorials to Milligan Rescue Unit.

    Notes:

    Gene P. Smith, 68 of Lincoln, passed away November 23, 2022. Gene was born on August 17, 1954 in Crete, Nebraska to Billie and Virgie (Havel) Smith. He grew up in Lincoln where he graduated from East High in 1972. He was active in sports during high school, playing football, basketball, and baseball. Gene worked in the tire industry for 50 years, retiring in April of this year.

    He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, playing softball and horses. He was a coach to his kids in both sports and life. In recent years, Gene loved watching his grandchildren as they started competing in their sporting events.

    Gene is survived by his wife Jane and their children Kyle (wife Sara) Smith of Beverly Hills, MI, Scott (wife Katie) Smith of Lincoln and Stacy (husband Tyler) Stahly of Hickman; five grandchildren: Addison Smith, Jackson Smith, Wyatt Smith, Benny Smith and Savannah Stahly; his mother Virgie of Lincoln and sister Barb (husband Mike) Honnerman (sic-actually is Honerman) of North Platte as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

    He is preceded in death by his father Billie Smith and sister Sue Lockee.

    There will be a Memorial Service at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 29 at Sesostris Shrine Center, 1050 Saltillo Road. A Celebration of Life to follow from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Sesostris Shrine Center.
