Jim also operated a taxi service and had many regular customers for local trips as well as trips to Lincoln, Omaha, Excelsior Springs and St. Joseph, Missouri. He was assigned operator's license number 956, a number which his granddaugther, Elsie has had for ten years. (Milligan, p 325).

    Leonard graduated from Milligan High School in 1940, and bought his brother, Albert, out in the wholesale soft drink business. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on December 3, 1941, ans was attached to the 503rd Fighter Squadron. His group was with the Eighth Air Force in England. He was discharged from the service on October 18, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He went into partnership with his brothers, Fred and Albert, in the Feed Mill, Alfalfa Mill, and the implement business. They also distributed wholesale beer and soft drinks. Leonard also played the trumpet with many different bands over the years. He assumed the leadership of the Milligan Legion Brass Band in 1961, along with managing the Milligan Auditorium Theater from 1958 through 1962. He was active in numerous civic organizations.     Leonard married Arlene Venice Vnoucek on 21 May 1946. She worked for awhile as a domestic, and in May, 1942 obtained a clerical position with the U.S. Corps of Engineers, where she was employed until 1946. At that time she transferred to the War Assets Administration. In 1948, she began her employment with the State of Nebraska in the Bureau of Vital Statistics. As of 1988, she was Assistant Director of the Bureau. Elsie remained actively involved in Czech heritage organizations, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. (Milligan, p 244).

    Elsie Marie Cecrle was born to Joseph V. Cecrle and Mary (Kasik) Cecrle on December 16, 1920. She passed away May 4, 2014 at the Legacy Terrace in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 18 days.
    Elsie graduated from Ohiowa Public School in 1938. Upon graduation, she moved to Omaha, NE, where she worked in the offices of the United States Corps of Engineers and the War Assets Administration. She than moved to Lincoln, NE and began her long time career with the Nebraska State Health Department on April 2, 1948. She started out as a clerk and was the Assistant Director of Vital Statistics at the time of her retirement on April 30?sup?th?/sup?, 1993.
    Elsie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lincoln, NE and the St. Francis Altar Society Circle. She was interested in preserving her Czech heritage, and as a result was involved in numerous ethnic groups throughout the state. Of particular interest to Elsie were the local and State Czech Queen Pageants, which she helped coordinate. She was proud of her association with the Czech singing group, the Capital City Czech Choraliers, which she was a charter member. She continued to participate in the activities of these groups after her retirement. Elsie was also involved with the Nebraska Czechs of Lincoln, Nebraska Czech Inc., the Heritage League of Lincoln and the Nebraska Public Health Association. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Milligan, NE, the Eight and Forty in Lincoln and the Western Fraternal Life Association Lodge 76 of Milligan.
    She was preceded in death by her Parents, Joseph 1955, Mary 1980, brother Rudolph 1975, sister Emilye 1983, brother Joseph 2004, sister Rose 2007 and an infant brother at birth.
    She is survived by sisters Blanche Capek and Mary Ann Kronhofman, special friend Donal E "Sarge" Finn and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

    Public visitation will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Farmer & Son Funeral Home - Kotas Chapel in Milligan.

    Blanche Anna (Cecrle) Capek was born to Joseph V. Cecrle and Mary M. (Kassik) Cecrle on February 28, 1926 on a farm near Milligan, Nebraska. She passed away on July 25, 2020 at Heritage Crossings Nursing Home in Geneva, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 4 months, and 27 days.

    Blanche attended School District #39 as a youth. She then attended Ohiowa High School her Freshman and Sophomore years before transferring to Milligan High School for her Junior and Senior years, graduating with the class of 1943.

    She taught country school for two years at District #32 and #65. Blanche married Joseph G. Capek on October 8, 1946 in Clay Center, Nebraska. They lived on a farm ? of a mile south of Milligan, until they built a house in January of 1986 and moved into Milligan. To this union, three children were born: Randall Gene, Larry Joel, and Jo Ann. Joe and Blanche loved to dance and went on many bus trips to dances. They also liked to travel, especially enjoying trips to Hawaii and to the Czech Republic to visit relatives.

    Blanche was involved in many organizations. She worked with the Blood Mobile for 28 years, she was a lifetime member of the Milligan Jrs. Extension Club, she helped with Grassland Day for many years, and was a 4-H leader and Jr. Auxiliary Leader. Blanche was also a member of the Milligan United Methodist Church. She had a fondness for her cats and she especially loved Quincy and Ralphie.

    Blanche was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe; siblings Rudy, Emilye, Joe, Elsie, Rose, and MaryAnn.

    She is survived by her children Randy Capek and wife, Lana of Tobias, Nebraska, Larry Capek and wife Adrienne of Milligan, Nebraska, Jo Capek of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren; sister-in-law Lucille Capek of Milligan, Nebraska and many nieces and nephews.

    Mary Ann Kronhofman was the youngest child born to Joseph and Mary (Kassik) Cecrle on a farm southwest of Milligan on July 9, 1928. She passed away on August 27, 2019 at the age of 91 years.

    She attended District #39 Hillcrest Country School and Milligan High School graduating as valedictorian of her class of 1945.

    After working 10 months at Guarantee Mutual Life Insurance of Omaha she returned to teach at District #5, a rural school north of Milligan for 1 year. She always took pride that she got her job in Omaha due to her good penmanship.

    Mary Ann married Ed Kronhofman of Tobias on April 12, 1948. They lived on a farm six miles south of Milligan for 10 years, and then moved to the Dr. Blattspieler farm 3 miles east of Tobias on Hwy 74. After 14 years the farm was sold and they moved into Tobias. She lived there until moving to Heritage Crossings 4 years ago.

    To this union 5 children were born.

    Mary Ann was always busy on the farm. As a farmer's wife she had to play nursemaid to many newborn animals, did lots of gardening, cooking, baking, canning, sewing, and making crafts. Her love of animals continued throughout her life, as she always loved having a house cat. She enjoyed watching the birds at her feeders at home and at Heritage Crossings.

    She worked for the Sunset Nursing home and in 1978 she started work at Peterson Manufacturing in DeWitt.

    As an adult Mary Ann was baptized at the Exeter Methodist Church and was an active member at the Tobias Community Church and taught Sunday School. She took great joy in taking part in and organizing the Christmas Candle Lighting service held each year. She was a member of the 8 and 40, VFW Auxiliary and the Tobias American Legion Auxiliary. She received a certificate on her 90th birthday for over 60 years of service to our Veterans. She was also a member of the Misfits singing group, Red Hats and she enjoyed singing and playing the guitar. Mary Ann enjoyed spending time with her grand kids and great grand kids. They always brought a smile to her face.

    Mary Ann kept her sense of humor throughout her illness. She will be greatly missed by her family.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Cecrle; husband Edward; great-granddaughter Elizabeth Labenz; brothers, Rudy and Joe; sisters, Emilye Cecrle, Rose (Lawrence) Krupicka and Elsie Cecrle.

    She is survived by Glenn (Trish) Kronhofman of Tobias, Cheryl (Don) Uher of Daykin, Galen (Trish) Kronhofman of Alma, Dan (Brenda) Kronhofman of Geneva, Karen Kronhofman (Brent Mitchell) of Lincoln; 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.

He was discharged February 25, 1955, and moved to Belleville, Illinois, where he was employed by Union Electric and Power Company at Cahokia, Ilinois. He passed away while on the job. Eleanor Emma Matthies was born on May 22, 1925 on a farm east of Geneva to Frank and Emma (Suda) Kassik. She passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital on November 28, 2011 at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 6 days.

    She graduated from Milligan High School in 1943 and then taught for a short time at area country schools. She married Louis H. Matthies Sr. on July 13, 1963 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Ohiowa. He passed away in 1979. To this marriage 4 children were born. They lived on a farm east of Ohiowa.

    She moved to the Villa in Milligan and was currently living in the Exeter Care Center. She was a 44 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and member of the Milligan and Geneva Senior Citizens. Eleanor cooked at area cafes until her retirement in 1990. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Emma Kassik, husband Louis Matthies Sr. and infant daughter Joy Marie. She is survived by her daughter, Lorie Pinkham and husband Scott of Minden, Louis (Butch) Matthies and wife Sherrie of Geneva and Robert (Bob) and wife Janet of Hastings; grandchildren Christopher, Joshua, Callie, Sophie and Ian Pinkham of Minden;Alexander and Catherine Matthies and Erick and Zackary Ackland of Geneva and Lauren and Andrew Matthies of Hastings; brothers Donald F.     March 25, 1928 - January 26, 2013

    Funeral service for SFC (Retired) Donald Frank Kassik, 84, Lawton will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel.

    Sergeant Kassik passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Lawton with his family by his side.
    Burial with full military honors will be in the Post Cemetery, Fort Sill.

    The family will greet friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the funeral at the funeral home.
    He was born March 25, 1928 in Geneva, Nebraska to Frank William Kassik Sr. and Emma Alice Suda. He grew up in Milligan, Nebraska and farmed from 1940 '96 1949, he then worked road construction up until he was drafted into the Army in 1951. He served in Japan twice, Vietnam twice, Germany and Korea. While on his first tour in Japan he met Nori Kobayashi, who worked for the 94th Engineer Maintenance Company, the two dated and eventually married on May 12, 1953 in Yokohama, Japan. On March 8, 1954 they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Mary Jo. In 1957, while in Hanau, Germany, he completed and received his G.E.D. He retired September 1971 after 20 years of service.

    After his retirement he volunteered at Center for Creative Living and McMahon-Tomlinson Nursing Center. He loved gardening and working with his hands, he loved helping his wife Nori's widowed friends with carpentry, plumbing and whatever else they needed; his friends called him "Mr. Fix". He was a lifetime member of The Retired Enlisted Association, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 56, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 751, Korean War Veterans Chapter 319, Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 5263, American Legion Post 29 and The 591st Engineer Maintenance Company. He received numerous awards including: A Certificate of Appreciation for Retirement from General Westmoreland and President Richard Nixon, The Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Achievement in The Republic of Vietnam and The Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces.

    Survivors include his wife, Nori of the home; his daughter Mary Jo Kassik Fountain and granddaughter Rebekah E. Fountain of Huntsville, Alabama; two brothers, Frank (Margaret) William Kassik Jr. and Robert (Marjorie) Ray Kassik of Milligan, Nebraska, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eleanor Matthies.

    Frank W. Kassik Jr. was born to Frank W. Kassik and Emma A. (Suda) Kassik on March 30, 1936 at Milligan, NE and passed away May 1, 2015 at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, NE at the age of 79. He was one of 4 children.

    Frank attended all 12 years of school at the Milligan Public School and graduated with the class of 1954. He loved playing basketball,and he played in the school band. He went to work at the Kassik Milling Company. In 1957 he married Margaret Krejci at the St. Stephens Catholic Church in Exeter, NE.     His greatest joy was playing with the Milligan Czech Brass Band for over 50 years.
    One of the things he always made time for was to watch his children's school events especially sporting events and played softball himself for over 20 years.
    Watching his son-in-laws football games with the highlight being the 2015 basketball tournament. He loved to garden and raise tomatoes which he always enjoyed giving to those in need or those who would just take them. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milligan.

    Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Emma A. (Suda) Kassik, brother Don Kassik, & sister Eleanor (Kassik) Matthies.

    Robert was born in the Charvat farm a mile and a half west of Milligan. He attended Milligan Public School and graduated with the class of 1959, at which time he went to work with the Farmers Co-op. On January 13, 1964, he went into active duty with the army and spent time in Germany. He was discharged on January 14, 1966, and returned to the Farmers Co-op. He is now assistant manager. (Milligan, p 331).

    Robert Ray Kassik of Milligan passed away unexpectedly at Bryan East Hospital October 19, 2019 at the age of 78. He was born October 2, 1941 to Frank W. Sr. and Emma A. (Suda) Kassik on the Charvat farm a mile and a half west of Milligan.

    Robert attended Milligan Public School and graduated in 1959. He began work for Farmers Cooperative in Milligan on June 1, 1960. On January 13, 1964 he went into active duty with the army and spent time testing artillery in Germany. He was discharged January 14, 1966, returning to his job at Farmers Cooperative where he continued to serve the patrons. He began his career there in the grain and agronomy departments, driving the propane truck and then moving indoors as assistant manager and then eventually branch manager at Milligan. He was with Farmers Cooperative for 48 years until his retirement in September 2008.

    He married Marjorie Halama on March 7, 1975 at the Milligan United Methodist Church. To this union, two daughters were born: Karie Lynn and Stacey Jo.

    He lived his entire life in Milligan serving the community in many ways. He was on the Milligan School Board from 1983 to 1998 and served as secretary. Robert was a lifetime member of the H.S.S.K. American Legion Post 240 in Milligan. In November 2018 he was honored with receiving a Quilt of Valor.

    He was active over the years pitching for the Milligan men's softball team. He also enjoyed golfing but especially loved his bowling. Bob and Marge bowled with others on mixed leagues and he looked forward to bowling on Wednesday nights with the guys on the Kassik Milling bowling team. On December 29, 2000 he bowled a perfect 300 game at Friendly Lanes in Friend, believed to be the first in the alley's history. He also enjoyed playing poker especially at the annual Suda Christmas gathering the first Sunday in December. He was nicknamed "Vejce" (the Czech word for eggs) by his friends because following a night out with the guys he always told everyone to go to the Hilltop Caf? for "vejce." He enjoyed spending his spare time doing jigsaw puzzles and playing computer games.

    Bob and Marge enjoyed attending all of Ethan's school and church activities, basketball games, baseball games and 4-H events. Ethan and Grandpa were close referring to each other as "best buddy" while Ethan's classmates affectionately referred to Bob as "Grandpa Fedora." Bob and Marge also enjoyed babysitting and being able to spend much quality time with Carter and Alice. He was very proud of his three grandchildren.

    Everyone has always expressed how positive he was, never seeing him without a smile on his face and a friendly greeting or visit for all.

    Robert was preceded in death by his parents Frank W. Sr. and Emma A. (Suda) Kassik, sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Louis Matthies; brothers Donald Kassik and Frank W. Kassik Jr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law Joseph and Evelyn Halama; infant niece Joy Matthies.

    Survivors include: his wife of 44 years, Marjorie of Milligan; daughter Karie Jobman of Beatrice; daughter and son-in-law Stacey and Jim Muff of Crete; grandsons Ethanael Jobman and Carter Muff; granddaughter Alice Muff; sister-in-laws Nori Kassik of Lawton, OK; sister-in-law Margaret Kassik of Milligan; cousin Richard (Judy) Kassik of Milligan; nieces Mary Jo Fountain of Lawton, OK, Kathy (Tom) Gillmore of Lincoln, Karen (Dean) Filipi of Milligan, Karla Kassik of Lincoln, Lorie Ann (Scott) Pinkham of Minden; nephews Paul (Jeannie) Kassik of Shickley, Perry (Judy) Kassik of Friend, Louis Matthies of Geneva, Robert (Janet) Matthies of Hastings; and by many cousins and friends.

    Notes:

    Henry helped his father farm until he was inducted in the Army on October 13, 1965. He trained at Fort Benning in Georgia and Fort Sill in Oklahoma. After serving in Germany for 18 months, he returned to Milligan. He died in an auto accident. (Milligan, p 329).

    After graduating from High School in 1965, Ralph served on a Naval Ship off the coast of Viet Nam. He returned home to farm after completing his tour of duty. He is a Milligan Fireman, on the Board of Directors of the Farmer's Co-Op, and plays in the Legion Brass Band (Milligan, p 331).

    At the time of the 1930 census, which was conducted in mid-April, Norma and her sister Dolores were living with their paternal grandparents, Frank and Josefa Loukota. Norma was listed as age 3 5/12, and Dolores was shown as 2 2/12, both born in Nebraska...with their father listed as born in Nebraska and their mother in Oklahoma. Norma was a 1944 graduate of Milligan High School, and Doris was a 1946 graduate. It therefore appears her year of birth was probably 1926, and not 1925 as shown by Carolyn Mastny.

    A Funeral Service for Tom will be held on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home - Kotas Chapel in Milligan, Nebraska. Kim Dunker will officiate the service.

    Visitation will take place on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home - Kotas Chapel in Milligan.

    Following the Funeral Service it was Tom's wish to be cremated. His cremains will be placed in the Bohemian National Cemetery at a later date.

    Memorials are suggested to the Ulysses Volunteer Fire Department, Dwight American Legion, or Ulysses Cemetery Association.

    Tom C. Kassik was born on April 27, 1948 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Albert & Neva (Hawthorne) Kassik. He passed away on December 6, 2018 in David City at the age of 70 years, 7 months, and 9 days.

    He grew up in Milligan, Nebraska where as a young boy, he went to the Mill (Kassik Milling) with his father and helped grind feed.

    Tom attended school in Milligan and graduated in 1966. He then attended Milford Vocational School in Milford, Ne where he was educated in auto mechanics. After his graduation from Milford, he enlisted in the Army in 1968 and served until 1970.

    Upon his return from the service, he farmed and raised cattle. He later became a truck driver. He often told how he saw the entire lower 48 states and most of Canada in the 30 years he spent on the road.

    On March 26, 2006, He married DeLores (Miller) Hood at their home in Milligan. They later moved to Ulysses, NE. This marriage brought along two grown daughters and two grandsons. Tom enjoyed being known as "Grandpa Tom".

    Tom retired, but not quite. He enjoyed hauling grain for D & R farms when they needed him and then later for Bertrand Farms. He claimed trucking was in his blood.

    Tom was a member of the Milligan Volunteer Fire Department as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge in Geneva. After moving to Ulysses, he joined the American Legion in Dwight Ne.

    Tom suffered a heart attack and passed away on December 6, 2018. He will be remembered for his quiet manner and his gentle kindness to his family and friends. May he rest in the loving care of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

    Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Sam Kassik; and his first wife Carol Mooney.

    He is survived by his wife, DeLores Kassik of Ulysses, Nebraska; stepson Arley Mooney of Lincoln, Nebraska; stepdaughters Natalie Mooney-Murray and husband Thomas of North Grafton, Massachusetts, Laurie Elder and husband Robert of Ulysses, Nebraska, Linda Metzger and husband Garin of Seward, Nebraska; grandchildren Bailey Mooney of Bee, Nebraska, Ethan Murray of North Grafton, Massachusetts, Wyatt Elder of Ulysses, Nebraska, Morgan Elder of Ulysses, Nebraska; nieces, cousins, and friends.

    A graduate of Lincoln Northeast High School. Never married. Bachelors from Wesleyan; Master in School Administration from the University of Nebraska. He taught High School in Friend until he passed away from a heart attack at school in 1982. A ten year scholarship, awarded each year to a graduating senoir, was established as a Memorial to him.     Notes:

    Dennis received a football scholarship to Doane College in Crete, and graduated with a bachelors degree in 1971. He is in Banking in Denver, Colorado. (Milligan, p 198).

    After a 6 month battle with cancer, Dennis died peacefully on Sunday, June third surrounded by numerous friends and his wife Susan Beranek. In addition to his wife, Dennis is survived by Tom and Patricia Foster (brother-in-law and sister in-law), Luke Foster (nephew), Laura Foster (niece), Joanne & Lyle Lewis (aunt/uncle) and other relatives.

    He is a graduate of Doane College (Crete, NE) where he was a member of the 1967 - 1970 winning football team. He and the entire team were recently admitted to the Honor D hall of fame.

    Dennis had a lengthy career in banking which began at Gateway Bank & Trust in Lincoln, NE. After relocating to Denver in 1980 he worked for a variety of financial service organizations.

    Dennis was a 30+ year survivor of Ewing's Sarcoma cancer. The past 36 years he has been an avid golfer, motorcyclist, skier, swimmer, Caribbean traveler, wine aficionado, and grill master.

    There will be a Celebration of His Life on Saturday, June 16, 2012. From 2:30 PM until 4:00 PM, at the DoubleTree Hotel, 7801 East Orchard Road, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111. A Wake at 5:00 PM will follow at the home of Pam Kenny and Doug Kline, 3806 South Jersey, Denver, Colorado 80237.

    A special room rate will be given at the DoubleTree Hotel for the Celebration of Life for Dennis L. Beranek.
