    Obituary

    Marie H. Sysel, Crete

Marie H. Sysel, 101, Crete, died Thursday (8/17/06). Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Preceded in death by husband Edward; parents Mary Svec and Frank R. Soukup; brother Frank Soukup; sisters Alice Marshall, Pauline Brt, Rose Duba, Wilma Huppert and Irma Dinneen. Survived by daughters and sons-in-law Helen Marie Vasak (Richard) and Lorraine Pallesen (Charles); grandsons, their wives and children William Vasak (Rushelle), Brandon and Briana, John Vasak, Richard and Danielle, Milton Vasak (Nathalie), Nicole, Melissa and Allison, Michael Pallesen Sr. (Kathleen), Katie, Michael Jr., Libby and Maggie, Edward Sysel Pallesen (Marty Haessler), Henry and Phoebe.

Born July 17, 1905, in Lawton, Okla. Educated at Milligan Public Schools, Milligan. As a young girl she served as a telephone operator at the Frank H. Woods Exchange, Crete, owned a beauty shop in Wilber, served as a visiting nurse in the Milligan, Tobias and Ohiowa areas. Married Edward Sysel in Nebraska City in 1933. Joined Edward in farming the Sysel homestead near Crete and in 1940 on the farm they bought by Parkersburg, Iowa. When Ed died suddenly in 1951 she took over the farm, eventually selling it and moving back to Crete with her daughters into the house she built and in which she resided until her death.

Upon returning to Crete, Marie worked as an office nurse for Dr. Lewis Forney and later opened and operated a nursing home, "Sysel's Rest Haven," and an assisted-living facility, "Sysel's Manor." In 1969, Marie returned to farming, having bought a farm near Wellsburg, Iowa, which she managed until her death. Her longtime friends Ivan and Frances Slifer farmed the land, and when they retired, their son, Spencer and his wife, Cindy, continued farming the land.

Being a widow at age 45 she raised her two daughters, ages 17 and 15 at the time, providing for their education at St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, Doane College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She worked side-by-side with her husband, Ed, on the farm and after his death used her knowledge and skills to manage by herself each farm she owned. She was absolutely devoted to her daughters and their families and always put their welfare before her own.

Last year at this time she traveled with her daughter Lorraine and Chuck in the Czech Republic, Germany and France. In May she attended special functions at the preschools of her great-grandchildren in Omaha and New York City. In June she was in California to celebrate Helen Marie and Richard's 50th wedding anniversary. She was blessed with marvelous health, living by herself in her own home until she was hospitalized approximately a week ago after suffering a fall. Words cannot express how much Marie's family and friends will miss her, but they are grateful for having been able to share with her the appreciation of her Czech heritage and especially her love of Czech music, her marvelous cooking skills, her joy in raising beautiful flowers and her optimistic, positive attitude toward life.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1245 Juniper St., Crete. Visitation will begin at noon on Sunday. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Kuncl Funeral Home, Crete.

    In Memoriam
    Frank H. Soukup
Slain in the Line of Duty December 16, 1966

Detective Frank Soukup was slain in a gun battle at a local motel while questioning some out-of-town suspects in a bogus check operation. Two of the gunmen were fatally wounded in the exchange of shots between the investingating officers and the suspects, one of them felled by shots fired by Detective Soukup after he was mortally wounded. It was later determined that the shots which killed the officer were fired by Donald W. Rodgers, one of the gunmen killed. Detective Soukup was the first officer in the history of the Lincoln Police Department to be slain in the line of duty.

Frank Soukup was 53 years of age and had been a member of the Lincoln Police Department for ten years. In November of 1966 he was awarded the People and Law Award sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. 18. 30.  Lumir Frank Svec Descendancy chart to this point (11.Emil2, 1.Vaclav1) was born on 11 Sep 1928 in Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 20 Mar 2016 in Crete, Saline County, Nebraska.

    Notes:

Lumir Frank Svec, age 87 passed away peacefully on March 20th at Tabitha of Crete, surrounded by loving family and friends. He was born on September 11, 1928 on a farm outside Milligan NE to Emil and Helen Fujan Svec. He was the middle of five children.

Lum is preceded in death by his parents, wife Marian, sister Betty as a child, brothers Bernard and Jim, nieces Jan and Kelly Ahlschwede, special niece Carolyn Schmalken, and Bud (Buddy) the cat. He is survived by his daughter Donna of Minneapolis MN; son Gary of Aurora CO; grandchildren Guy (Jenn), Kira (Dustin) and Kalee of CO; great-grandchildren Troy, William and Alayna; sister Ruby Langhorst of David City; nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Lum graduated from Milligan High School in 1945, and at the age of 16 began working at the Crete Mills. He married Marian Cudly, also of Milligan, on August 9, 1949 and they celebrated 53 years of marriage before her passing. Lumir retired from the Crete Mills after 46 years and spent his retirement years involved in two things that were his passion: attending sales/auctions and refinishing furniture. Lum couldn't resist a good deal and walked away from many auctions with boxes of unknown "treasures" that he had purchased for a quarter. He also had a good eye for furniture, which he would buy, repair if needed, then refinish and sell. At one time an antique dealer regularly came from Kansas to purchase furniture from him.

Lum also refinished items for people in the area. He didn't do it as a business, but rather took as much work as he wanted to do, and told people to pay him what they thought it was worth. He said that he figured some people paid too little, some people paid the right amount and some people paid too much, so it all evened out in the end.

He loved to joke, tease and laugh, and truly enjoyed other people's company. He enjoyed Czech music, and loved kolaches, particularly cottage cheese. For many years, he got together on a daily basis with his coffee buddies, one of his favorite activities. He was a kind and caring man, and appreciated all the love and support he received from friends, acquaintances and family in his later years. He will be missed.

Services will be on Tuesday (3-29-2016) at 10:30 a.m. at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Visitation: Monday, 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials directed to Tabitha of Crete, 1540 Grove, Crete NE 68333 or the Crete Volunteer Fire Department, 210 E 14th St, Crete, NE 68333.

Glen Soukup, passed away on Tuesday March 1st, 2022, at home. Glen was born to Frank and Allene Soukup on Feb. 1st, 1942, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He attended Lincoln Public Schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1959. He then attended the University of Nebraska obtaining his undergraduate degree and was an esteemed member of the Golden Key Society. Glen then continued his education at the University of Nebraska College of Law earning a Juris Doctorate of Law in 1967. He was proud to have worked for Nebraska Governor James Exon's administration as Director of the State Technical Assistance Agency for several years. He then went on to pursue personal business ventures.

Glen was a lifelong resident of Lincoln, spending a good portion of time at his fishing cabin/summer home, also known as "The Castle in the Canyon" located at Decker's, Colorado. Some of his favorite times were spent enjoying his specialty "Mountain Margaritas" and red beers, or a jack and coke on the upper deck. He loved watching the hummingbirds and afternoon showers from his canyon view veranda, evenings with Trudy breathing in the fresh mountain air, and all times spent with his favorite Golden Retriever, Dylan. Glen will be fondly remembered by family and friends for generously hosting so many at his beloved cabin, and for always sharing the beautiful sights the Colorado mountains had to offer.

In earlier years he and his daughter Nicholle enjoyed spending time at his mother's farms near Crete and Wilber, experiencing nature and farm life while embracing their Czech culture with family. During the last few years though his health began to fail he did his best to maintain close relationships with family and friends and enjoyed many games of cards while partaking in a few adult beverages.

Glen was preceded in death by his father Frank H. Soukup, mother Allene B. Tesar, brother Kenneth J. Tesar, sister-in-law Linda S. Soukup, and the best dog ever Dylan "Doolittle" Soukup.

Glen is survived by daughter Nicholle Soukup of Norfolk, granddaughter Haleigh Kappel of Lincoln. grandson Holden Soukup of Central City, and great grandson Trace Reynolds of Lincoln. Brother Allen (Janice) Soukup, nephew Kelsey Soukup all of Lincoln, and niece Jessica (Michael) Zmek of Archer. Sister Jo Ann (Steve) Kroll, nephew Peter Kroll, and nephew Jeremiah (Megan) Kroll all of Lincoln. Brother Gregory Soukup, nephew Frank (Kim) Soukup, and nephew James (Liz) Soukup all of Lincoln. Sister in law Marianne Tesar of Crete, niece Ashley Tesar of Lincoln, and niece Whitney (Ryan) Peterson of Palmer, MN. Long time special friend Trudy Townley of Lincoln. He is also survived by many great nephews and nieces, cousins- many of whom were like siblings to him, his church family at Four Square church, and of course many dear friends.

The Glen Soukup family would like to extend a very heartfelt, and appreciative THANK YOU to all whom helped Glen in recent years. Being very strong in his faith Glen would always say "the good Lord will take care of me", we may all now rest assured that has been done.
