Lena Durbin, 82, passed away in her home August 24, 2015. Lena was born in Hemphill, to James and Mary Campbell Craig. Lena has lived in the Strickland Crossing community all of her life, she was a stay at home homemaker and mother; and she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons: David Durbin and wife Cynthia of Strickland Crossing, Roy Durbin of Pineland, and Dennis Durbin and wife Sabrina of Hemphill, her daughters: Deborah Boyett of Strickland Crossing, Darlene Berry and husband Jeff of Vidor, and Wanda Parnell and husband Wilburn of Pineland, her 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Cremation under the direction of Starr Funeral Home. Private memorial service will be at later date.

Rosa Lee Walker

Rosa Lee Walker, 90, crossed over peacefully on December 31, 2021 and this is her amazing story.

Rosa was born in Hemphill, Texas in 1931 to Dewey and Eva Buckley (both deceased). She graduated from Pineland High School in 1947 and hit the road to the big city of Houston where she began her career at Southwestern Bell. She immediately joined the Communication Workers of America, which would set the stage for the rest of her life's work. She soon became a full-time union organizer and then went to work for the Harris County AFL-CIO and eventually, the Texas AFL-CIO in Austin in 1965.

Rosa was a force to be reckoned with in life, and in the labor movement. She fought tirelessly for equal rights and fair pay for all working people. She was caring, compassionate and a bulldog with a passion when it came to fighting for working class people. Rosa was a leading figure in the labor movement in the 50's and early 60's when it was predominately a 'man's world'. She stood and fought arm in arm with workers in hard fought and often dangerous fights to organize unions and win fair pay and safe working conditions.

Rosa's many accomplishments included: induction into both the Texas AFL CIO Labor Hall of Fame and the Texas Women's Hall of Fame; founding member of the National Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW); Vice President of Texas Coalition of Labor Union Women; long time elected member of the Democratic National Committee; member of the Texas Judicial Conduct Commission; founder of the Texas Consumer Association; member of the Red Cross Midwestern Advisory Board; and recognitions by resolution of the Texas House of Representatives, Texas Senate and the Congress of the United States. She was also a key force behind the Texas Democratic Women, and was a lifelong member of the Capitol Area Democratic Women.

Rosa also served people, especially union members, in need across the state. She coordinated disaster relief operations with the Red Cross in hurricanes, tornados, floods, and plane crashes and worked on site tirelessly until everyone was clothed, fed, had a place to stay and received some assistance to get back on their feet. Rosa went into disaster areas before power, phones and even windows in hotels were replaced, knowing workers needed help to get their families settled, get back to work, and replace valuable items such as medications.

Rosa was a legendary figure in the Texas Labor movement and earned the respect of law makers, politicians, and the working people of Texas regardless of political affiliation. Rosa was a mentor to many men and women in the labor movement and elected officials at every level of government. She was particularly an inspiration and mentor to union women, and created pathways for women to lead across the state.

Rosa routinely received calls for advice, and made calls to praise or admonish individuals as the situation dictated. (You did not want to be the subject of the latter). Rosa's advice was never sugar coated, but you knew it was given for the recipient's best interest or the best interest of the community or group. Rosa gave respect and earned respect of many as a result.

Rosa believed every election was important - from school board to the President of the United States of America. She spearheaded voter registration drives, protest marches, peaceful civil disobedience and conducted training for activists and workers alike. Rosa Walker was frequently asked to be a speaker at functions, and always well received.

In short, Rosa Walker was a pioneering labor leader and feminist, ahead of her time and leading the way. She made a difference for the better for all working people.

Rosa is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Boyce Breedlove; sisters, Annie Nipper, Lucille Miller and Velma Westmoreland; and brother, T.J. Buckley.

She is survived by her loving daughter and care taker of many years, Debbie Jennings of Austin; sister, Mary Townsend of Nacogdoches and many nieces and nephews who she loved.

Her daughter would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Heart-to-Heart Hospice Care in Austin. They were all amazing and especially to her nurse Diana who was a rock to lean on in her final days.

Due to the pandemic, there will be no services. A private graveside was held at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery.

Mary Jane Townsend, 87, of Pineland, Texas passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Larkspur Nursing Home in Lufkin, Texas after a long illness.

Mary Jane was born on April 28, 1936 in Pineland, Texas to the late John Dewey Buckley and Eva Josephine Craig Buckley. She attended school in Pineland and worked at several places over her lifetime, including West Sabine High School cafeteria, Temple Lumber Company, Fin & Feather Marina, San Augustine Fiberglass boat plant and Brookshire Brothers gas pumps.

She loved reading, playing board games, jigsaw puzzles, listening to country music, gardening and canning. She could hum tunes while working that were like the actual songs. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family.

Mary Jane is survived by her son, JD Brown and wife, Martha, of Pineland; her daughters, Sandra Crow and husband, Billy John, of Pineland and Nomia Mistretta of Nacogdoches; son-in-law, Earl White; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Willis Pat Brown, Arvil White, and Roy Townsend; her daughter, Mary Ann (Brown) White; her son, Willis Pat Brown, Jr.; her sisters, Velma Westmoreland, Rosa Breedlove, Lucille Miller and Anne Lou Loper; and her brother, T. J. Buckley.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023 in Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Floyd Wright officiating.

Burial will follow services in Little Flock Cemetery.

Melba Craig Broussard, 73, of Houston, Texas passed away Friday, July 6, 2018 in Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.

Melba was born in Silsbee, Texas on December 15, 1944 to Lee Edward Craig and Vada Byerly Craig. She had worked as a school bus driver for Aldine ISD for over 30 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Pam Holmes and husband, Craig, of Hampton, Virginia and Glenda Lane of Brookeland, Texas; brother, Charles Craig and wife, Linda, of Brookeland, Texas; sisters, Sue Horton and husband, Kenneth, of Woodville, Texas and Barbara Strickland of Brookland; grandchildren, Lori Leger, Robert Lane, and Ashley Lane; three great grandchildren, Austin, Dallas, and Kaylyn; family and friends; and special friends, Sandy, Bennie, Valerie, Elsie, James, and her other school bus driving friends from Aldine ISD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Broussard; her parents, Lee Edward and Vada Craig; and her son, Michael Craig;

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Pine Hill Cemetery on FM2024 in Hemphill, Texas under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. George Jeffcoat officiating.

Mary Ann White, 59, died Wednesday morning after an illness at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. She was born in Sabine County and lived here all her life.

Mary is survived by her husband William Earl White of Pineland, her mother Mary Jane Townsend of Pineland, three daughters; Tammy Alexander and husband Ray of Hemphill, Trina Helmer and husband James of Pineland and Tonya White and husband Kenneth Brodie of Pineland. She is also survived by her brother J.D. Brown and wife Martha of Pineland, two sisters, Sandra Crow and husband Billy, Sr. of Pineland and Nomia Mistretta of Nacogdoches. Eight Grandchildren; J.C., Riley, Nason, Hannah, Madison, Austin, Tuff, and Colton.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her father Willis Pat Brown, Sr. and her brother Willis Pat Brown, Jr.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm, Thursday, August 12, 2010, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 13, 2010, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Plainview Cemetery near Pineland, TX.
