    Notes:

Bruce Howard believes that "he married in the year 1770, in Edgecombe County, and shortly thereafter purchased a farm in the Southwestern portion of the county near Turkey Creek in what would later become Nash County, next to the farm of his brother in law, Solomon Strickland....in about the year 1788, he and his family left the Turkey Creek farm and moved a few miles to the west into Franklin County where they apparently lived on a rented farm.. (p 141). Howard believe's he is the William with six sons under the age of 16 residing his household on the 1790 census.

In about the year 1794, no doubt in company with others, he moved his family to the State of Georgia and settled in Oglethorp county. He and his family did not remain in Oglethorp but a short time. By 1798 they were residing in the southern portion of Jackson County, as it was then situated. He located, it is my belief, a few miles below his brother-in-law and the other members of the Strickland family. He did not own any land at this time, but farmed and opened a road tavern inthe southern part of the county (pps 142-143). By the year 1804, his son's James, William, Wilson and Drury began buying up land along Shoal Creek. William Jr purchased the same land that his uncle Solomon Strickland had formerly owned....In the year 1805, William and some of his sons were included in the land lottery of that year, but were unsuccessful...by the late fall of the year 1808, William and some of his children had had enough of Georgia. They packed up and left the State, going to a new home in Rutherford County, Tennessee...he sold some land he had received as a result of the 1807 land lottery. His agent was Robert H. Higenbotham, (believed to be) the husband of his niece, Milly Strickland. William and his family remained in Tennessee for the remainder of their lives and there are today still descendants of this family in that state. (p 144).

Additional information about William Pace can be found in: THE BELLOMY/BELLAMY AND PACE FAMILIES AT A PLACE CALLED DOVER Written and Illustrated by William and Martha Bellomy, Copryright 1999, (address given), email billbellamy@home.com

William Pace was born October 10, 1745, and was the son of John Pace and Susanna Hutchins (Hutchings/Houchins) Pace.

MILITARY CAREER OF WILLIAM PACE If you are a descendent of William Pace, you are going to be very proud to have him as your ancestor. He enlisted in the 14th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Lewis on January 23, 1777. Because of his outstanding performance and character, Pace was recommended for assignment to George Washington's Commander-in-Chief's Guard.

Each regiment from Virginia sent four men that were to be interviewed by George Washington himself for the Guard. They were not to appear in uniform as George Washington wanted to see what they looked like in everyday clothes. The candidates had to be between 5 ft. 9" and 5 ft. l0" tall. Additional requirements included neatness of appearance, good character, married, a land-owner, and a sober man with good character. In May of 1777, William Pace was transferred from the 14th Virginia Regiment to the Commander-in-Chief's Guard. William Pace's enlistment was up six weeks after Valley Forge where he spent that terrible winter. However, he reenlisted for the duration of the War. William Pace remained in the army after the Battle of Yorktown in October, 1781, until he was discharged in Newburgh, New York, in November of l783. Although he was furloughed home after the Paris Peace Treaty on June 5th, 1783, he and the other troops would have returned if the British had tried to start the war again. There is much evidence to support the fact that the British were plotting to retake the Colonies.

Several documents from the United States Archives show information through monthly Company Muster Rolls and other documentation. Another good source for this information about William Pace is the 100-year-old book by Carlos E. Godfrey entitled Commander-in-Chief's Guard. William Pace's battles are enumerated in Mr. Godfrey's book, and also on p. 332 of the Casey book. The battles he participated in are as follows:

Morristown, New Jersey, May 6, 1777

Sick in Hospital, June and July, 1777

Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777

Battle of Germantown, Pa., October 4, 1777

Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey, June 28, 1778

Reenlisted and furloughed one hundred and ten days, January 18, 1779

    Rejoined September 1, 1779

Battle of Connecticut Farms, New Jersey, June 7, 1780

Skirmish of King's Bridge, New York, July 3, 1781

Battle of Yorktown, Virginia, October 19, 1781

Promoted to Sergeant, June 4, 1783

Furloughed Newburgh, New York, June 6, 1783 until the ratification of the definite Treaty of Peace

    Discharged November 3, 1783

A biography of George Washington in THE ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA lists the battles of George Washington during the Revolution, and every battle that George Washington was in after William Pace joined the Guard, William Pace was there, also.

Washington's Guards not only guarded George Washington's person and his papers, but they also fought in the battles, many times on the front lines.

    Notes:

Bruce Howard disputes the conclusion of the former editor of the Pace Society Bulletin that Amy Pace was the daughter of Thomas and Amy Pace of Northhampton County, North Carolina. He believes that the editor had failed to take into consideration certain critical evidence which would have disproved her assumption at once had she looked closely. First of all was the time sequence. Solomon and Amy were married in September of the year 1764 in Edgecombe County and Thomas Pace of Northhampton did not die until about January of 1765. His will was filed for probate at February Court, 1765, in Northhampton County where the family physically resided, and he had time to change that will if he disapproved of her actions. But that is not the important feature. Secondly, was the law. By law all marriages had to take place in the county residence of the female. (Laws of North Carolina, 1741). There was a very compelling and strong reason for this law...to protect the girl and ultimately her family from unscrupulous men....it did not prevent her from marrying the man of her choice; it simply exposed him to her family and relatives in the community where she lived. Had Solomon Strickland lured the daughter of Thomas of Northhampton, away from family to western Edgecombe to marry her away from the family, there would have been objections coming from her mother, and possibly others, to the sheriff. Also, remember that Solomon applied for a license, or bond, for marriage, legally, at the courthouse before the marriage took place. Does it make sense that he would follow the law on one hand and break it on another? (pps 136-137).

Jane Strickland Shelton, Ed.D., also presented a paper agreeing with Bruce Howard's thesis at the Pace Society Annual Meeting, Williamsburg, VA on June 17, 2000. He paper was printed in the Pace Society of America quarterly bulletin, No. 132, published in June 2000.

Her Find A Grave memorial page shows she was buried at the Lystra Primative Baptist Church Cemetery in Comer, Madison County, Georgia.

Amey married Solomon Strickland on 19 Sep 1764 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Solomon (son of Jacob Strickland and Lucretia Pitts) was born between 1735 and 1742 in Nash County, North Carolina; died after 1818 in Madison County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 5.  Priscilla Pace Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born about 1750; and died.

    Notes:

In PACE OUR COLONIAL ANCESTORS, the author Bruce Howard makes a case for Richard and Elizabeth having a daughter named Priscilla. He further argues that she is the one who married Jacob Strickland Jr and resided in the same area as did other Pace children near Turkey Creek in Nash County. (p. 146).

  5. 6.  George Pace Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born in 1752; died in 1816 in Clay County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

Moved to Blue Ridge Mountains and then onto Clay County, Kentucky. There George and his wife and 10 of their children can be located on the 1810 census. Before his death, he helped his son Matthew establish the Pace Salt Works, along and on both sides of the (Kentucky) River in which most of the family, from time to time, worked. (Howard, pp 147-149)

George married Sarah Walker on 27 Oct 1784 in Wake County, North Carolina. Sarah was born before 1766; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    10. 43. Hardy Pace  Descendancy chart to this point was born after 1803; and died.

  6. 7.  James Pace Descendancy chart to this point (1.Elizabeth1) was born about 1753; and died.

    Notes:

Nash County Grant Book, Caveat No. 7 James Pace Enters 100 acres of Land in Nash County on the waters of Turkey Creek Joining Solomon Strickland Sen and Wm Pace & out for Complement 21 July 1784 Nash County Deed Book 2, pg 109 State of North Carolina grant to James Pace by Governor Sam Johnston...on November 26, 1789...a tract of 95 acres on the south side of Turkey Creek adjoining Solomon Strickland...etc.

Although he applied for and eventually received a grant for this land he never lived upon it, nor did he keep the land. I am convinced that he sold his interest in this property before the grant was issued. I am further convinced he and Sarah, by the time the grant was issued, had already left the state of North Carolina

It appears they may have moved onto Savannah Georgia, as the Georgia Gazette contains the following listing, Married--In Savahhah, James White Esq., to Mrs. James Pace, widow, on June 3rd 1790

    (Howard, pp 150-151)

James married Sarah Knight before 1780. Sarah was born before 1760; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Married but the name of his wife is unknown. Can be located on the 1800 and 1810 census in Chatman County, North Carolina. They had several daughters, but no sons. (Howard, p 151)

    Notes:

He was to have died during the Indian War, at the Battle of Boggs Hill in Athens, Georgia.

  12. 20.  Henry Strickland Descendancy chart to this point (4.Amey2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born about 1766 in North Carolina; died on 6 Feb 1817 in Madison County, Georgia.

    Notes:

In the notes of Tony Pickett, he cites "Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Easley, Sr,., and Elizabeth Earle Elkins of St. Helena Parish, Louisiana" by Austin Beverly Smith, et al (1993). Page 6 indicates that Henry Strickland donated the first land to build a church in St. Helena Parish, now called the New Zion Baptist Church. The eight children of Henry Strickland and Ruth Thompson were listed as Hardy Strickland, Lt. Ancil B. Strickland, Cade Drew Strickland, Sr, Thomas C. Strickland, Elizabeth Strickland, James Robert Strickland, Nancy Strickland, and Willis H. Strickland. The book further noted that when Henry Strickland married Ruth Thompson, Daughter of Alexander Thompson (RWS) in 1787, whe was disowned by her father. Apparently he eventually accepted the marriage, as he deeded Henry Strickland land in 1802.

According to the STRICKLAND SCENE Vol 7, No 3, pp 45-46, the following deed was located on microfilm at the Georgia Department of Archives & History.

ELBERT COUNTY GA DEED BOOK N, p 5:

The following query was posted (by mwise@prodigy.net) to the Strickland-L@rootsweb.com: "In the probate records of Madison Co, GA 1816-1841 Thompson C. Strickland and Cade D. Strickland were administering the estate of A.B. Strickland (in another place Ansel B. Strickland) from 1814-1824 James R. or P. Strickland bought property from the estate in 1814 (from) H. Strickland, Isaac Strickland, Willis H. Strickland. Who is this? And how does he related to Solomon Strickland of Madison Co?" Rocky Strickland (RockyIII@aol.com) replied that his undocumented records show "that Ancil B. Strickland, Thompson C. Strickland, and Cade D. Strickland were brothers and three of eight children of Henry Strickland and Ruth Thompson. They were grandsons the Solomon Strickland who was born 1735 in Nash County, North Carolina, and died 1818 in Madison County, Georgia."

His FindAGrave memorial page (ID 98340873) states notes his probably burial place was the Lystra Primative Baptist Church Cemetery in Comer, Madison Co, GA, as his parents were charter members and his mother was buried at this church two yeas before Henry's death.

It further shows the St. Helena Parish, Louisiana census from 1820 as follows:

    1820 census, St Helena,? Louisiana
    Widow Stricklin 0-1-0-1-0-0 2-1-2-0-1 - Elizabeth Gurley
    One female over 45; b. by 1775
    One male 18-25; b. 1795-1802
    Two females 16-25; b. 1795-1804
    One male 10-15; b. 1805-1810
    One female 10-15; b. 1805-1810
    Two females under 10; b. 1810-1820

According to researcher Kenneth Landry Schaefer, the "Widow Stricklin" listed on the 1820 census was not Ruth, but Elizabeth Gurley of Johnson Co., NC, daughter of Robert Gurley and widow of a Jeremiah Strickland, as shown by probate papers. It's likely then that Ruth was living with one of her children or other relative in 1820:

Henry married Ruth Thompson about 1787 in Georgia. Ruth (daughter of Alexander Thompson, Sr. and Elizabeth Hodge) was born about 1763; died about 1860 in Greensburg, St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

An article entitled "Solomon Strickland of Henry County, Georgia" by Nancy Cornell appeared in Vol 6, No 2 of the STRICKLAND SCENE newsletter, and is summarized below:

Solomon Strickland lived in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1790 per the County Tax Digest. He put in a claim for stolen horses in Elbert County, GA in 1802. In 1804, he was given land in Elbert County by his father. Though this "Deed of Gift" is no longer extant, it is referred to in a later deed written by his father in Madison County, Georgia in 1813. Solomon was still in Elbert County when he drew land in Baldwin county in the 1807 Georgia Land Lottery.

He was one of the first settlers in old Randolph County (now Jasper County, GA). The earliest record of him in Jasper is in May 1808, six months after the county was formed from a part of Baldwin County. This record, titled "Stock Marks" includes Solomon Stricklin. By July 1812, Solomon has become a Justice of the Inferior Couty. Military records at the Georgia Department of Archives & History shows Solomon served as a Private in Capt. Joshua Hagerty's Company in November 1813.

In Wiley A. Clements booklet, published 1921, and titled HISTORY OF HENRY COUNTY MAY 1821-1921 states: "Among the very first to come to the County were John Glenn, Solomon Strickland, and Wiley Heflin who settled on the Towaliga River..."

In HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS OF GEORGIA, Rev. George White's brief description of Henry County includes a list of the first Superior Court Grand Jurors and includes S. Strickland. From a list of the "Members of the General Assemblies of Georgia, 1777-1958," We find that Solomon Strickland was elected the first Representative of Henry County in the year 1822. He served this two year term alone, and in 1825 was elected along with John Griffin, evidently to fill a vacancy left by Thomas C. Bennine.

Military Records at the Georgia Department of Archives & History list Solomon Strickland as a Colonel in Henry County from July 17, 1823 to April 20, 1824. For the rest of his life, he was referred to by many as Col. Strickland.

Wiley Jones James, Solomon's grandson, in a letter dated November 27, 1919, gave the following general description of the family: "The Strickland family are scattered everywhere and all claim to be kin-folks. They cannot be excelled for bravery, but are not as strident and cautious (as others). Politically, they were Whigs, and hated to be defeated on anything and loved their ancestry. Their religion was divided between the Baptist and Methodist. My Mother had three brothers who were missionary Baptist Ministers. Their names were Barnabus, Ephraim and Bedford."

It is apparent Solomon was a fairly wealthy man, and one who was respected by his acquantances. During this period of time, a mans wealth was primarily judged by the amount of land and the number of slaves he owned. In the Henry County 1831 Tax Digest, Solomon is listed as owning 14 slaves and 500 acres of 2nd quality land on the Towliga River, as well as owning one "big" carriage. Not everyone owned a carriage, so perhaps this is an indication of his wealth. The 500 acres was his "home" or main plantation, and he also owned an additional 1500 acres of third quality land on the Towliga River. The 1837 Henry County Tax Digest states Solomon still owned 500 acres on the Towaliga River, and 11 slaves.

No record has been found of Solomon's marriage to the mother or mothers of his children. Traditon says he married (1) Frances Diamond and (2) Peggy Diamond. His wife was still living in 1830, but died sometime prior to 5 June 1839, when Solomon married again to Hulda Ann Hardwick of Butts County, GA. Solomon and Hulda had no children.

In the Pace Society of America quartertly bulletin, No. 132, dated June 2000, Jane Shelton Strickland writes that Solomon m. Frances Diamond who experienced travail of her husband who fathered a child by her niece, Margaret (Peggy). This is documented in Jasper County, GA Court Records.

The records in the Henry County Ordinary's office shows that on September 4, 1837, Solomon Strickland applied for guardianship of his grandchildren, and it was approved by the court. He was "hereby appointed Guardian of the persons and property of Frances Eliza, Mary Ann Paulina, Nancy Susan, Enoch Solomon and Barnabus Bedford Solomon, minors of Bedford Solomon, deceased." He had been granteded temporary guardianship March 30, 1837.

Children not listed in his will but known to have been his children were: Barnabus Strickland and Nancy Ann James. Petitioners of a caveat against Solomon's will on May 9, 1844 were Elijah Strickland; John P. Buckalew and Darkas (Dorcas) his wife; Alfred Buffington (who married a Lavina Strickland), Barnabus Strickland; and John P. James and Nancy Ann, his wife.

    Notes:

Richard Chapman emailed, in February 2012, that Hardy Strickland was born in Guilford County, North Carolina

Many years earlier, Marianne Matkin shared the following research, along with the excerpt from a letter written by Hardy's son, Madison:

In the 1840 Jackson County, GA census, page 37, we find Hardy Strickland with males one 20/30 and one 50/60; females one 60/70. Also same page Madison Strickland males one under 5, one 20/30 and females one 20/30.

In the 1850 Jackson County, GA census page 44, we find Hardy Strickland, 67, farmer worth $5,000 born North Carolina with the John Hambrick family

In the 1860 Jackson County GA census, Jefferson Post Office, we find Hardy Strickland, age 77, born N.C., farmer worth about $16,000, Josaphen age 7 and Elizabeth Defur age 25.

The 1870 Jackson Co, GA census page 382, shows Hardy Strickland age 87 worth $1,200 born North Carolina. He is in the family of Jacob Strickland age 60.

According to Marianne, Hardy's son Madison wrote the following about his father, nicknamed "Devil," in a letter dated 25 February 1871: "Father has not been able to walk for some two weeks from a violent pain in one of his legs. His curseing apparatus appears to be in fine running order...he has a good appetite but it seems that his food instead of going to support his earthly tabernacle is convirted into Dams, God Dams, Hellfire and other little simple phrases of a similar nature."

The following note was posted to the STRICKLAND-L@rootsweb.com in June 2000:

I have absolute (as it can be) proof that Hardy and Priscilla are buried in Maysville, GA. The cemetery is on a hill about 125 feet off Deadwyler Rd and 1.5 miles from the intersection of Highway 52 and Deadwyler, on the left. It is in a pasture. I was just there, made pictures, will have them developed tomorrow. The cemetery is in very bad shape, most stones are on the ground but Priscilla, relict of Hardy Strickland, Hardy , d. 9 Mar 1872 in the 91 or 97th year of his life. (I have looked at the census of 1850,60,70 and consistent age is given and he would have in fact been only 89 years old if the census is right) His tombstone is still standing. Madison b. 25 Sept 1812 d. 12 Sept 1895 (Hardy's son), Madison's wife Harriett 24 Aug 1811 d. 17 Jan 1895 and his son Daniel Webster, also the Josie the dau. of Hardy and his third wife, Martha Defoor whom he married on 3 Nov 1850 in Jackson Co., GA On Josie's tombstone, which is on the ground it says, Josie Strickland b. (appears as this should be d.) 1863 10 years. Thanks Clare (Email to STRICKLAND-L@rootsweb.com, June 2000, from tiafind@aol.com)

His second wife was said to be Elizabeth KING.

Trudy Cox also shows as a fourth wife as Mrs. Patsy Day.

Nov 1836: Received by experience, Elizabeth White Oct 1837: Elizabeth White, Pernecia Travis baptized Apr 1842: Members included: Elizabeth White, Emily and Patsy Strickland, Rutha White, Henry Strickland, Elizabeth White (dec'd), Polly (Mary) Travis, William Travis, Nancy Travis, John Travis, John Travis, Sr., Nancy Travis, Mary Travis

Elizabeth Strickland White and 10 others founded the regular Baptist Church of Jesus Christ on the banks of the Housen Bayou on May 29, 1858. This later became known as the First Baptist Church of Hemphill. Elizabeth joined by letter from the Jerusalem Church in Amite County, Mississippi. The other founding members were Richard and Ruth Travis, Henry S and Mary Etta White, Simon and Mary Ann Beckcom, John and Sophronia Everett, and Cannon and Sophronia Travis.

Elizabeth's husband, Edward, did not become a member of this church, founded by his wife and several of his children, until over six years had passed. He then joined on a profession of faith and Baptism in June 1864. According to the minutes of June 25, 1864, "Confarence was adjorned for the Church to meete at Father E Whites at 4 oclock for the purpos of hearing what the Lord had don for his precious sole, after hearing of his Experiance it was moved that Father E White be Received in Christian fellowship."

This experience must have caused him to evangelize, because on July 23d, 1865, "after preching, the privelege of the Church was Extended when too Servint Girls came forward, Amy belongin to Edward White & Charitee also belonging to Edward White. after hearing ther Experience was Received the church and then adjorned to the water" By September, 1865, Father E. White was Moderator of the Conference, though it appears he gave up this reponsibility quickly. He was replaced by Pastor John L Mills in October of 1865. His faith apparently never wavered as it was noted that he "Dyed Jan 13th 1871 in the Faith."

Elizabeth married Edward White after 1809 in Elbert County, Georgia. Edward was born about 1781 in Virginia; died on 13 Jan 1871 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Travis Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

IGI Records show that Una Carter married Amaziah Vardeman in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana on 12 December 1815. The couple moved north to Mississippi sometime after their marriage, as all three of their daughters were born here.

A woman named "Uny Massy" can be found in Pike County, Mississippi in 1840 (Microfilm #704). Ronald Vern Jackson's index to this census references page 152. It appears that the reference should have been to pg 297, which is what is actually stamped at the top of the microfilm as a guide. The census listing indicates this was a household made up entirely of females. There was one female between the ages of 10-15, two between ages 15 and 20, one between 20 and 30, and one between 40 and 50. Living with them as well was a female slave, who was somewhere between 26 and 56 years of age. It appears that Una might have actually had four daughters, and not just the three currently listed. Una's oldest known daughter, Polly, became 20 years old in 1840. Her youngest known daughter, Jemimah, reached age 15 the same year. This means that either of them might have been classified into two age categories. Therefore gauging the age of a fourth daughter is especially difficult. She could have been born prior to Polly, or after Jemimah. She might even have been a daughter by Una's second husband.

At the time of the 1850 Sabine Parish Louisiana, Una was living alone in dwelling #304, between her daughters Jemimah Amazia Vardeman White and Ann Vardeman White. She is listed in the transcription of the Sabine Parish census prepared by Kathy Casagranda as Unas Massa age 57, M (sic), born in Louisiana.

On the 1860 Sabine County Census, she is living with her daughter Jimimah, and son in law John Reagan White (Household 118). This is next door to Henry Strickland White and his wife Mary Etta Vardeman. On that transcription, she is shown as Una Massa, age 66, F, born North Carolina.

Una married Amaziah Vardeman on 12 Dec 1815 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Amaziah (son of William Vardeman and Ann ???) was born in 1790 in Tennessee; died between 1826 and 1849 in Mississippi. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

His grave marker indicates he was a veteran of the War of 1812. Kathy Casagranda writes he was a member of the first session of the District Court in Sabine Parish, January 1843. He was a farmer by occupation.

The (other) Nancy, (who was) dau of Solomon and Amy, in my opinion did not marry. Solomon made no mention of her children in the deed of gift only of the slaves he had given her earlier and stated that Nance wished her bro. Ephrium to have the slaves. The Nancy who m. Edward HARRELL was the dau of Devil Hardy (granddaughter of Amy and Solomon). Nancy was the sister of my ggrandfather. Her descendents have clear connection of her to Hardy and Priscilla. Clare on the STRICKLAND-L list is her descendent.

    Notes:

Marianne Matkin of Mt. Pleasant, Texas writes that:

"In the 1850 Jackson Co, Georgia census, page 17 we find Madison Strickland age 38 farmer worth $4,000 born Georgia wife Harriet age 38, Daniel W. age 14, Mary P age 9, Emily I age 4, all born Georgia.

In the Jackson Co, Georgia 1860 census, page 64 or 221 we find Madison Strickland 47 farmer worth $19,000, Harriet age 48, Mary age 19, George E. Dedwley age 24 farm laborer worth $5,000, Emily I Dedwley 15 all born Georgia. There are some errors here: it shows Madison and Harriet married within the year, but it was George E. Deadwyler and Mary who were married on 22 Feb 1860. Also, Emily I was not a Deadwyler but a Strickland.

The 1870 Jackson Co, Georgia census page 402 gives us Madison Strickland age 55 farmer worth $9,500 born Georgia, wife Harriet age 56, born Georgia with a black cook.

In the 1880 Jackson County, GA census page 643, Millers District we find Madison Strickland age 67, farming born Georgia, parents born North Carolina. Wife Harriett age 68 keeping house born Georgia. Father born London, England (A big surprise, no wonder I haven't been able to find him in the Revolution), mother born Georgia."

Marianne also has a copy of the will of Madison Strickland Jackson Co, GA dated 25 July 1877, proved 6 October 1890.

Madison married Harriet Allan on 13 Nov 1834 in Habersham County, Georgia. Harriet (daughter of James Allan and Mary Strickland) was born on 24 Aug 1811 in Georgia; died on 17 Jan 1895 in Jackson County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  60. 103.  Ansel Strickland Descendancy chart to this point (29.Hardy3, 4.Amey2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born about 1815 in Georgia; and died.

    Notes:

Most internet trees show that the Ansel Strickland that married first Elizabeth Strickland and later married Amy Braswell is a son of Hardy "Devil" Strickland and his wife, Priscilla Ann Strickland.

Richard Chapman (chapman_richard@bellsouth.net) emailed, in December 2012, that he was "convinced that this Ansel is not the son of Hardy and Priscilla as most trees on Ancestry state. My first clue came from a descendant of Hardy and Priscilla who is reasonably sure (based on oral family history) that Hardy's son Ansel never married. Assuming this is correct, I began a search to find my Ansel's parents. First, I learned that Ancel's first wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Richard Benjamin Strickland. Next, I confirmed that Richard B. had a brother named Bennett and that Bennett had a son named Ansel Butler born abt. 1815 (about the same time as Hardy's son) This meant that Ansel's first wife was also his first cousin. I have discovered many trees which indicate that this Ansel is the son of Bennett Strickland and Nancy Bone. The most credible source is a descendant of my Monroe's brother. She is positive of her information but at this time has not provided her sources. Family names and proximity of families indicate Ansel has more ties to Benjamin and Bennett than to Hardy's family. I noticed that a John F. Wise from Montgomery,Al has made comments about Ansel and he invites reactions"

John F. Wise of Montgomery, Alabama posted the following information on a message board:

I never found or recorded this info. before, so I thought I'd pass it on, i.e., some of you other Strickland researchers may be interested in this finding and conclusion.

While checking the U.S. Census of 1860 info. contained in the "Strickland Scene," Vol 9, No. 4, June 1991, page 67, I ran across the following census entry for Clarke County [GA], Dwelling 222, Family 222, on A. B. STRICKLAND (39 years old), his wife MARY ??? (27 years old), and their six (6) children.

I checked this census entry against my master database [I always do this to clear up unattached "strays"] and found that A.B. STRICKLAND fits the birth date and surrounding county areas, and the name and year-of-birth of the son of HARDY (DEVIL HARDY) STRICKLAND SR. and wife PRISCILLA ANNE STRICKLAND, of nearby Jackson Co., GA. Since this is a good circumstantial and logical "probable" hit, I connected this A.B. STRICKLAND found in Clarke Co., GA. (in 1860) to DEVIL HARDY STRICKLAND SR. in my database.

Of course my info. is in no way proof positive, so I stand ready to be admonished, corrected, etc. If any of you have changes or additions to this finding, please share your info. and update your Strickland kuz'ns (me included).
