Noah Strickland

Notes:

In a Query posted in the STRICKLAND SCENE newsletter (Vol. 3, No 2, Second Quarter 1982), "Lily Carter Thurman states that Noah Strickland was born in North Carolina ca 1801. Tradition says that he left with hog-drovers when he was sixteen and came to Mississippi." Her query was as to the identity of his parents.

Casagranda writes that "Noah Stephenson Strickland was born in Nash County, NC to Henry Strickland and RUTH THOMPSON.....Noah married MARY ELIZABETH CARTER daughter of WILLIAM CARTER and MARY E (Cotton) STRICKLAND."

This does not appear to be correct, as he was born in North Carolina, and the other children of Henry and Ruth Thompson Strickland were born in Georgia.

Noah Strickland's family is listed in Helen Gomer Schluter's 1860 CENSUS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS WITH CIVIL WAR RECORDS as:

In SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, it is noted that Noah and his family came to Sabine County, Texas in 1860 and paid state and county taxes in 1861. The book added that the Noah Strickland served in the Civil War, but took the measles after being mustered out and died in Mississippi. (White and Toole, p 59).

The book, OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS by Virgie Speights (S. Malone Printers, San Augustine, Texas c 1983), says "Noah and "Polly" Strickland had four daughters, Nancy, Martha, Jane and Sarah, and three sons Bill, John and Matt" (p 54). The census lists 6 sons, where as Old Timers only lists 3. Perhaps three sons died as young men, or moved away from home too early for the younger generation to remember. Also, could Jane and Sarah be the middle names of the daughters actually listed on the census? Later in OLD TIMERS it is stated that "(Noah and Polly Strickland's) six children were John Strickland (Dee's father), Bill Strickland, Matt, Jane, Martha and Unice."

Leatha Betts says she has Noah Stephenson Strickland b.c. 1801- 1803 (1850 census states he was 49, born in North Carolina) married c. 1825, to Mary Elizabeth Carter b. 1807 Jackson Co. Georgia (1850 Census) and mentioned in Jackson Co. Ga. Deed book D as receiving household items for estate of Solomon Strickland. Her research indicates that the Noah that settled in the Sabine River area is the son of Noah Strickland, Sr. b.c. 1759 Nash Co. N. Car. and Elizabeth Dew of Nash Co. North Carolina, son of Henry Strickland b.c. 1735 Nash Co. N. Car. (d. 1796, Madison Co. Ga.,He left will in Georgia, listed in Ga. Pioneers, Vol. 6....)

This is supported by the following email from JJudyJam@aol.com on 26 April 2001:

Noah Strickland, son of Henry and Mary Hickman Strickland left a will dated 21 Oct 1809. Proven Nash Co August 1813. In the will he leaves to his son Noah (listed last in the will ,the youngest?): That I give to my son Noah Strickland a certain piece of land beginning at a corner Hickory in Thomas Carter's line and along Carter's line to the river, and down said river to the old spring, then along William Dew Strickland's line to the beginning; also 1 tract of land on both sides of the road containing 80 acres joining Thomas Carter and Roland Williams' lines; and 300 acres of land lying on both sides of Turkey Creek joining Hardy Stricklands and Benjamin Rice's line; also 3 Negroes named Willie, Zaney, and Kinchen; and 1 feather bed and furniture, Noah appointed William Buntin and Henry Adkins as Executors. This was however challenged apparently by Noah's wife (sic-s/b daughter) Mary and son in Law Henry Atkinson from Minute Books Nash CO By Tim Rackley (from excerpts) August Court 1813 - #740 A paper writing purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Noah Strickland was offered for probate by Wiliam Buntin and Henry Atkins Jr, the Executors therein named, and the Same being opposed by Elisabeth Strickland, Henry Atkinson & Mary his wife, Bolling Strickland, and by Edward, Noah, & William Dew Strickland, which three last are infants under Twenty one years of age to whom Elisabeth Strickland is appointed Guardian pro hac vice. It is ordered that a jury be impaneled to try whether the paper writing do Contain the last will & Testament of the Said Noah Strickland. Nash Co Minutes Vol . From "Early Records of Nash Co, NC 1777-1859" page 248:

STRICKLAND, NOAH inventory by Admrs., November 18, 1813, included 20 Negroes. The widow, Elizabeth Strickland, was given a year's allowance. Sale held September 9, 1813, with Elizabeth Strickland principal buyer. Her dower lands were directed to be laid off, August 1813. A sale of Noah Strickland property was held by Henry Atkinson, admr. January 11, 1820.

From these last 3 citings it appears that Noah and Elizabeth's son , Noah II may have died after the land division in 1816 but before December of 1820. Leatha Betts notes that the "Jr." could still be refering to the above inventory...or someone could have transcribed Sr. incorrectly....since the date was one month prior to the settlement outright for Elizabeth. Or this could refer to yet another Noah. Judy noted she was leaning toward this fellow as Bolen in Extr and Edward is buying (from Noah Sr will the lands adjoin) Sorry this is so long, I am still learning what is meaningful and what is not. I am still working on the thought that Noah's wife Elizabeth was dau of Edward Moore. Noah's Daughter Mary named a child Alsey Moore Atkinson and Noah's son William Dew named a daughter Sally Moore Strickland. The name game is a good hint but the Moore name could just be from any generation. Elizabeth was named as Moore in her father Edward Moore's 1783 will and was called Elizabeth Strickland in the estate settlement in 1789.

One further observation. I believe the Bolen Strickland that married Martha Trignith 12 March 1835 was not the son of Noah and Elizabeth. He and Martha are on in the 1850 census with a slew of children ages 13 on down and an older Trigneth/Trigler female. His age is given at 34 making him born years after Noah's will. Any thoughts, help, corrections or gentle disagreement welcome

Judy Moore Welch who is still trying to be a Strickland and still believing that Mark Stricklands dau married the son of Edward Moore.

"(Born February 29, 1876) on the banks of the Sabine River in old Sabinetown, where they ran a ferry. It was in hard times of reconstruction days, with lawlessness rampant, and the Stricklands early learned to fight their way through hard times and rough days...When Dee was about 7 years old, his father had trouble with a drunk who pulled him out of bed and started fighting. Following this trouble, John moved his family to Orange. Dee Strickland moved back to Sabine County and married Luvenia Walker. Two of their three children survive: Mrs. Thelma Strickland Lakey of California and Mrs. L.C. Crouch of Houston. The Stricklands moved around to sawmilling, and lived in Rusk when Mrs. Strickland died. Dee came back to Pineland and worked for a month at the mill there; became restless and spent three years in Louisiana before returning to Sabine County, where he married Miss Zilpha Lott. Dee farmed and worked for Temple Lumber Company until his retirement a few years ago. He is the father of ten children by his second marriage. They are Mrs. Gladys Stevens of Houston, J.B. Strickland who is deceased, Mrs. Miriam Amason of Pineland, Robert Strickland of Wyoming, Herbert Strickland of Kirbyville, J.D. Strickland whereabouts unknown at present, A.W. Strickland of Dallas, Mrs. Claudine Hamilton of Beaumont, Mrs. Arlene Fields of Dallas, and Darwin Strickland who is in the US Army stationed in Nebraska. From OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS "In 1906 he was married to Mrs. Essie Strickland O'Riley, a widow with three children. To this union was born five sons. His wife was a good Christian woman and the children were brought up in the church, but he could not feel the conviction of saving grace until his mother died. His wife rejoiced but when he felt the call to preach, about 2 am one morning, and told his wife about it when she was making breakfast, he opened his Bible and began preaching.. she burned the meat and bread. Strickland has been preaching for years up and down the East Texas area has an unshakeable faith and believes in faith healing, citing as examples his recovery from TB and his wife's from cancer, after the doctors had given up on them....The Strickland's are a handsome, dignified couple, and thoroughly enjoy telling of the early trials of his ministry and the struggle to rear their 8 children on a minister's intermittent stipend. "The Lord always provided!" was Brother Bobs's prompt answer to any problem. "I recall once when I was preaching in Nacogdoches, the larder was completely empty and Essie was fretting something awful. I prayed and sure enough, an old colored man delivered a load of groceries." Born near Bronson, Rev. and Mrs. Strickland were second cousins. They attended the one room, three month session schools. "I spent two sessions in the Blue Back Speller before I graduated to a reader, slate, and pencil" recalls Strickland. A lady by the name of Evans was their first teacher, with Miss Jennie Oliphint a later teacher. Later schooling was at Newton with Professor Jim Sharpe as teacher; then there was a year each at Burkville, Jasper, Hemphill, and Timpson. Strickland grew up in a religious home with revival meetings and grove prayer meetings a regular part of his childhood. He worked for Jim Toole at Hemphill in his store, then went to Bronson when his father opened a grocery store and cafe. There he got in with the wrong crowd and lived a wicked life for several years.... The oldest Strickland son died in 1962."

L.C. Strickland Crouch, 90, of Humble died February 6, 1998. Mrs. Crouch was a native and former resident of Sabine County. She was employed by Leonard's Department Store for 18 years and was a charter member of Advent Presbyterian Church in Aldine. She was the daughter of the late Dee and Zilphia (sic) Strickland.

Survivors: daughters, Billie Sue Krause of Huntsville and Juanita Packard of Okemos, MI, seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held February 9 at the chapel of Rosewood Funeral Home in Humble with Gene Marion officiating. Interment followed at the Rosewood Memorial Park.

Miriam Amason

Funeral services for Miriam Amason, 92, of Jasper were held Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at Stringer and Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper, with burial at Bethel Church Cemetery in Pineland.

Mrs. Amason died Jan. 23, 2009 at Jasper Nursing & Rehabilitation in Jasper. A native of Sabine County and longtime area resident, she was a retired nurse.

Survivors: daughters, Doylene Gary and husband Pete of Jasper and Gail Payne and husband David of Wooden; brother, Darwin Strickland and wife Iliva of Greenbrier, AR; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, special friends Betty and George Patillo; many nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends. She is also survived by her extended family, the residents and staff of Jasper Nursing & Rehab Annex.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Buster Amason; her sons Dwain and Bobby Amason; one daughter-in-law, Juniata Amason; her mother and father and 10 siblings.

She was born Jan. 6, 1927 in Pineland as a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Van Dee Strickland and had formerly lived in the Beaumont area for several years. Survivors: her husband, Henry VILCHES of Atascocita, sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Paula Hamilton of Atascocita and John and Debbie Hamilton of Spring; granddaughter Suzanne Hamilton, a grandson, Keith Welshimer; sister, Mildred Amason of Jasper; and two brothers, Robert Strickland of Pineland and Darwin Strickland of Greenbrier, Arkansas. Services Will Be Held At 2 P.M. Today at Baptist Church

HEMPHILL, Sept. 24 (Spl) - Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Mrs. Beulah E. Carter, 63, who died at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday after a short illness. Services will be under the direction of the Starr Funeral Home with the Rev. Clarence Howell officiating, assisted by Ronald Spears. The body will remain at the residence until time for services. Burial will be in Hemphill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C. C. Rice, D. B. Speights, George Morris, Phillip Gandy, O. S. Chambers, Willie Self, Julian Smith, and J. H. Minton. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Baptist Church.

She and her husband, Brad Carter, owned and operated Carter's Caf? here since 1937, and leased it only two months ago when she became ill. Prior to this, they owned and operated the Streetcar-Barn Caf? in Beaumont from 1935 to 1937. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Horton and Mrs. Lucille Melding, both of Hemphill; two brothers, Benton Carlton of Hemphill and Alfred Carlton of Ranger, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Ollie Chops of Houston; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Edith Huff

Edith Huff, 91 of Pt. Neches died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Golden Triangle Nursing Home in Pt. Arthur.

Mrs. Huff was a native of Hemphill and had lived in Pt. Neches 58 years.

Survivors: a daughter, Joyce Fortenberry of Pt. Neches, a son, Billy Huff of Vidor; sisters, Alma Strickland of Pt. Neches and Laura Eicke of Tomball; a brother, I. T. Strickland of Hemphill; five granchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Pat A. Riley Funeral Home in Nederland. Interment followed at Oak Bluff Memorial Cemetery in Pt. Neches.

Lura Strickland Eicke

Lura Strickland Eicke died July 11, 2005 at Tomball Regional Hospital. Mrs. Eicke was born Oct. 26, 1910 in Hemphill and was 94-years-old at the time of her death. She had lived in Bronson for many years before moving to Tomball almost 15 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. B. "Will" Eicke. Mrs. Eicke is survived by four sons, W.B. "Bud" Eicke Jr and wife Deloris of Bay City, Cecil Eicke and wife Margie of Richmond, Col., George Eicke ans wife Annette of San Antonio, and Paul Eicke of Houston, two daughters, Louise CHILDS and husband Henry of Vidor and Emily McCLINTON and husband Herman of Tomball, and a brother I.T. Strickland of Kirbyville. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. Interment will follow at Bronson Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

Strickland was born in Hemphill, TX, to the late Jim and Mollie Strickland where he lived all his life. I.T. was a retired truckdriver in the logging industry and a member of the Hemphill Church of God.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife Louise Strickland of Hemphill, his son Marvin Strickland and his wife Sue of Buna, his daughter Melba Ellis and her husband Bobby of Tulsa, OK, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Larry Strickland.

Visitation will be Monday, May 3, 2010, at 8:00 am until service time at 10:00 am in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Starr ST. Hemphill, TX. Burial will follow in the Springhill Cemetery near Hemphill.

Funeral services for Maudie Strickland Curl, 77, of Kirbyville were held Monday, June 20, at Stringer Funeral Home chapel in Kirbyville. Interment was at Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper County.

Elijah Carter

Elijah Carter, 85, passed away December 24, 2006, at his home in Dickinson, Texas. He was born May 30, 1921 to Albert Kemp Carter and Martha Laney Strickland in Browndell, Texas.

Elijah was a retired Chemical Operator with Amoco Chemical in Chocolate Bayou, Texas. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the United States Army, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a member of Abundant Life Christian Center in LaMarque, Texas, where he was involved in Redeemers Ministry. He was a former board member and treasurer at First Assembly of God Church in Arcadia, Texas and a former board member at First Assembly of God Church in Joliet, Illinois.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 50 years, Margaret Bernice Carter, son, Kenneth Carter, and eleven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Carter, Daughters, Martha Story (Robert) of League City; Betty Schoob (Roger) of Shorewood, Illinois; Joyce Wagner (Buffard) of Andrews, Texas; son, Dale Spencer (Laura) of Alvin, Texas; daughters-in-law, Theresa Carter of Baytown, Texas; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He died at 7:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, 1994, at Memorial Medical Center of East Texas in Lufkin.

Born March 28, 1909, as a son of the last Doss and Harriet Woodard McClelland, McClelland was a lifelong resident of Sabine County. He was a retired self-employed contractor and a member of Strickland Chapel Church of God.

Billie Sue Crouch Krause, 69, of Huntsville died Sunday, December 31, 2000 at her residence.

Mrs. Krause was born December 1, 1931, in Bronson as a daughter of the late Troy V. and L.C. Crouch. She had resieded in Humble several years before moving to Huntsville and was a member of the Advent Presbyterian Church.

Survivors: husband of 50 years, Calvin L. Krause, to whom she was married March 3, 1950; a daughter and son-in-law Sherry L. and Terry Murray of Huntsville; a son and daughter-in-lawm Troy A. and Linda Krause of Huntsville; a sister Juanita Packard of Okemos, Michigan; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan 3. at the chapel of Rosewood Funeral Home in Humble with Pastor Gary Seager and Gene Marion officiating. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Park Cemetery.

Lucille Carter Melde, 92, of Hemphill, died Thursday night in the Sabine County Hospital. Lucille was born in Hemphill to John Bradford and Beulah Carlton Carter. Lucille was married to the late Swede Melde, together they owned and operated Swede's Grocery and Service Station at the corner of Hwy 87 and FM 944. Lucille was a life resident of Hemphill and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Lucille is survived by her son Charles Melde and his wife Kathy of Hemphill and her niece Tina Butler of Hemphill. She was preceded in death by her husband Swede Melde and her sister Myrtle Horton.

Graveside rites will be held Wednesday at 3 pm in the Bronson Cemetery. The Rev. Noel Hammock, paster of Little Flock Baptist Church of Bronson, will officiate. The Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill is in charge of arrangements. The body will remain at the funeral home until service time.

Jones was a World War II Veteran and a boilermaker.

Margie Sue Burkhalter, 65, of 2272 Philmore, Beaumont, died Thursday, June 23, 1994, at the Regional Medical Center Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Johnny Creasong and Floyd Wright officiating. Interment followed at Gravelhill Cemetery in Sabine County.

Mrs. Burkhalter was born Nov. 13, 1928, in Sabine County as a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Arie Elizabeth (Strickland) Campbell. She was a member of the Church of God and had lived in Beaumont for 48 years.

Carter was born April 6, 1931 in Hemphill to Carter Strickland, Sr. and Nora Humble Strickland. He was a United States Army Veteran. He worked as an Operations Manager in the trucking industry.

Frances was a life long resident of Sabine County and a member of the First Baptist Church of Hemphill. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

She is survived by her husband, Nolan Ferguson of Hemphill; son, Tommy Joe Ferguson and wife, Jennifer, of Silsbee; daughter, Wendi Moody and husband, Christopher, of Sour Lake; sister, Helen Murray of Pasadena; and grandchildren, Whitney, Walter, Trinity, Audrey, and William.

Eddie Mae Strickland Patterson, 64, of Lufkin died Thursday, Aug. 11, 1994.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Gipson's Funeral Home chapel in Lufkin with D.R. McNaughten officiating. Interment followed at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Angelina county.

Born June 2, 1930, in Sabine County, she was a longtime resident of the Diboll/Lufkin area. Mrs. Patterson, preceded in death by her husband, James A. Patterson Jr. in 1991, was a member of the Church of God and a retired beautician.

Survivors: daughters, Dorothy Barlow of Lufkin, Bessie Ferguson and Jerri Ledford, both of Diboll; sisters, Dorothy Largent and Mary Smith, both of Houston; a brother, James Edward Strickland Jr. of Houston; and grandchildren, Tina Turner, Bubba Nevills, Codie Barlow, Angela Ferguson, Karen Ferguson, Katherine Ledford, and Shellie Ledford.

William "Bud" Bradford Eicke, Jr., formerly of Bay City, Texas, passed away on October 22, 2020 at the age of 87. He was born on April 29, 1933 to William Bradford Eicke and Lura Mae (Strickland) Eicke in Hemphill, Texas. Bud was raised in Bronson, Texas and graduated from high school at the age of 15. He joined the Army and spent time overseas in Metz France. After the Army, Bud joined Sun Oil Company (SUNOCO) in Texas as a "doodlebugger" searching for oil reserves across the southwest. While working in west Texas, Bud met Deloris (Dee) Fockler while she was working in a restaurant. They fell in love and married, eventually raising five boys.

In 1963, Bud and Dee settled down in Vidor, Texas. Bud continued to progress his career with SUNOCO, and started tinkering with a new technology ? color TV's. Bud would spend some of his evenings with friends and family carrying a collection of vacuum tubes and "optimizing" everyone's color TV sets. Bud and the family would make special trips to Bronson and Lake City Michigan, so the boys could spend time with their grandparents ? going fishing, shooting, farming, horse riding, milking cows and bailing hay.

In 1970, the family moved to Plano, Texas so Bud could work at the SUNOCO Dallas office. He was recognized as a Senior Geophysicists. He was very proud and would tell everyone he was the first Senior Geophysicist without a college degree. While working for SUNOCO, Bud travelled all over the world including two trips to the North Pole looking for oil.

Bud worked for SUNOCO for over 30 years and retired at 55 years old.

In 1988, Bud moved to Bay City, Texas so he could spend more time fishing in the gulf. While at Bay City, Bud started a second career working as a sales representative for Trojan Explosives. Bud developed a shaped charge explosive that more efficiently focused the energy wave so lighter weight explosives could be used for oil exploration and is continued to be used today in seismic research. With Trojan, Bud travelled all over Mexico and South America helping those countries establish their oil exploration industries.

Bud lived in Bay City, Texas over the last 20 years and would enjoy his children and grandchildren when they would come down to visit. He always took them to Matagorda beach and he enjoyed watching them play in the sand and water. Some days he would take his boat and grandkids out fishing or just for a ride. Afterward, he always took them to his local watering hole, K-2 Steakhouse, and would fill them up with food and brag to everyone what great grandkids he had. We will forever be grateful to his K-2 friends. They became our friends and we truly loved them as they were "his Bay City Family".

Bud is survived by his sons; Michael Dennis Eicke and wife, Karen of Benbrook, Texas; Charles Eicke and wife, Rose of The Colony, Texas; Philip Barry Eicke of Trenton, Texas; and George David (Sam) Eicke of Wylie, Texas; his grandchildren, Mark William Eicke, Jessica Eicke-Reinartz, Alex Eicke, Brandon Hartwell, Cody Eicke, Ryan Eicke, Jeremy Eicke, and Joshua Eicke, and his brother; Paul Eicke, and sister; Emily McClinton and husband, Herman, and many Nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; William Bradford and Lura Mae Eicke; his son, William Bradford Eicke; his younger brothers, Cecil and George Eicke; and his older sister, Louise Eicke-Childs.

A "come and go" remembrance gathering will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home. Only a limited number of guests will be allowed to enter the funeral home facility at any one time to maintain social distancing.

Cecil Emil Eicke passed from his earthly home to be with his Heavenly father Thursday, March 4, 2010 following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at River Pointe Church, 5000 Ransom Road in Richmond. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. Pastor Patrick Kelley will officiate the services. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg.

Cecil was born Feb. 10, 1935 in Bronson, to Will and Lura Mae Eicke. He graduated from Bronson High School and subsequently went to work on a seismic crew in Wyoming. Upon his return to Texas, Cecil started college at the age of 27. He earned a bachelor of business administration from the University of Houston at the age of 35 while working and raising a family. After several years of working in the oil field business, Cecil established his own oil field service company, United Surveys, Inc. in Rosenberg. He worked very hard at building a successful business and enjoyed "going to the office". His favorite hobbies included working, cooking, reading, and taking long drives. He was a member of River Pointe Church in Richmond, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Cecil is preceded in death by his parents, Will and Lura Eicke; daughter, Claudia Joan Eicke; brother, Col. George Eicke; and son-in-law, Gary Karm.

Survivors left to cherish his memories included his wife of 33 years, Marjorie Harkrider Eicke; daughter, Bobbie Sue Karm; son, Scott Eicke and wife, Sheila; grandchildren, Hannah, Rebekah and Jackson Eicke; stepdaughters, Laura and Val Jones, and Susan and Cristo Kitras and their children, King and Meredith Jones, and Carolina, Christos, and Stefanos Kitras; two sisters, Emily and husband, Herman McClinton, and Louise and husband, Henry Childs; two brothers, William "Bud" Bradford Eicke Jr., and Paul David Eicke; seven nephews; three nieces; and his loyal personal friends, Domingo and Lucy Rodriguez, and their children, Marisol and Eric.

For those wishing, memorial donations in Cecil's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Houston and Southeast Chapter, 2242 West Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030-2008.

R.D. King will be remembered as many things. A loving Father to Catherine, Sally, Shelly and Duffy and stepfather to Diana, Carl and Cheryl. A great companion and friend to his brothers, Olen and Elray. A devoted son to his late parents, Pinkey and George. And an inspiration to his many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Hr was a World War II veteran and a graduate of Stephen F Austin University. He will be fondly remembered by many in Texas City, Alvin and Santa Fe, Texas as a football & baseball coach, a beloved math teacher and school administrator. He spent his later career with the Texas Department of Corrections as both an educator and an officer.

In his retirement he loved to travel, fish the lakes of East Texas, garden, cook and contribute commentary to the local newspaper. He was a memeber of the First United Methodist Church of Newton. R.D. was fortunate to find three great loves in his life in his predeceased wives, Mary, Marion and Norma. We want to thank his special friend who in his last days gave his great comfort.

He will be greatly missed by all.

R.D. fneral service will be March 19, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Newton at 2pm with buriel at Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper, Texas. Officiating at his service will be Reverend Joe Miller.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Daniels, Eddid King, Danny King, Mark Taylor, Jamie Johnson and Carl Schmidt.

Claude Joe "Bud" Strickland, 77, died Thursday afternoon in the Hemphill Care Center. He was born in Hemphill, Texas, to William "Bill" Riley and Eula Mae Humble Strickland. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 through 1957 and in the reserves through 1963. A resident of Hemphill he worked in construction as a project manager.

Mr. Strickland is survived by his wife Sandra Strickland, his sons; Joe Bryan Strickland and his wife Jeff of Hemphill, Mike Strickland and his wife Sonya of Hemphill, his daughters; Stacey Hamilton and her husband Joe of Hemphill, Dana Hansen and her husband Billy of Brookeland, his step-children; Theresa Havard and her husband Michael of Hudson, TX, Michael Hobbs and his wife Tonya of Central, TX, and Jimmy Hobbs and his wife Mindy of Grand Saline, TX. His grandchildren; Jeanie Mosley Mikeman, Michael and Jesse Strickland, Matthew and Robert Hamilton, Reagan Ozan and Tyler Hansen, Kaylee Havard, Logan and Emma Hobbs, Hunter, Brandon, Madelyn and Beaugh Hobbs, and nine great grandchildren. Mrs. Clay was born July 25, 1939 in Kirbyville, Texas to the late Minnie Elizabeth (Strickland) and Noah Lee Thacker, and died Friday, November 3, 2017 in Huntington.

Mrs. Clay had resided in Lufkin for 34 years. She served in the U.S. Navy and taught math at Jasper High School and Angelina College for a combined 21 years. Mrs. Clay loved her great-grandchildren the most and enjoyed spending time with her family. She attended the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Clay; daughter, Karla Clay; granddaughter, Abby Cla; great-grandchildren, Mason Arnold and Emma Villarreal; sister, Bonnie King; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Audie Ray Smith.

Doris Jean Mason

Doris Jean Mason, 66, of Route 1, Pineland (Strickland Crossing Community), died Friday, May 30, 1997, in a traffic accident in Rosevine. Her mother, Carrie Emma Hayes, also died in the accident.

Mrs. Mason was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Strickland Crossing as a daughter of the late George Strickland and Carie Emma Burns Strickland Hayes. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the East Mayfield Baptist Chruch. She was werving as secretary of the Pine Hill Foundatoin.

Survivors: a son, Steven Ray Mason of Hemphill; stepfather, Albert A. Hayes of Hemphill; a step-brother Alvin A. Hayes of Silsbee; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. T. "Billy" Mason, on Feb 10, 1997, and a son, Van Thomas Mason, on July 4, 1983.

Joint funeral services for she and her mother were held for she and her daughter at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro.Homer WIlliams and Bro. Vance R. Purtell officiating. Interment followed at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sabine County.

Dempsey Daniel McClelland, 82, died Wednesday morning in the Shady Acres Nursing Home in Newton. He was born in Sabine County to Archie and Clara Harley McClelland. Dempsey worked in the logging industry and lived in Pineland and attended the Strickland Crossing Church of God.

He is survived by his sons Dee Royce McClelland and his wife Cindy of Bronson, Dempsey Lynn McClelland and his wife Debra of Bronson, Manuel Gale McClelland and his wife Brenda of Hemphill, his daughters Sonjal Woods and her husband Mark of Bronson, Penny Coulter and her husband Jed of San Augustine, Jamie McClelland of Pineland, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bro. Lonnie B. Harley

Bro. Lonnie B. Harley, 65, of Pineland died at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1995, at his residence on FM 2024.

Bro. Harley was born Oct. 8, 1929, and had been a lifelong resident of Sabine County. He was a minister, serving as pastor of Strickland Chapel Church of God on FM 2024, and was self employed owning Lonnie B. Harley Logging Contractors.

Survivors: wife, Willie Dean (Bragg) Harley of Pineland; a daughter, Mrs. Dallas (Kay) Welch of Pineland; sons, Lonnie Ray Harley and Randy Harley, both of Pineland, and Tommy Harley of Bronson; mother, Minnie Harley of Pineland; a sister, Elizabeth Fore of Pineland; a brother, Leonard D. Harley of Hemphill; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, William A. Harley.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Strickland Chapel Church of God with Bro. Tommy Long, Bro. Vance R. Purtell, and Bro. Glenn Morton officiating. Interment followed at the Plainview Cemetery. Services were handled by Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

Leonard D. Harley

Leonard D. Harley, 51, of Hemphill died at 3:25 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1996, at his residence on Texas 184.

Harley, a retired diesel mechanic, was a lifelong area resident. He was born July 19, 1944, in Sabine County as a son of Minnie McClelland Harley and the late William Alvin Harley.

Survivors: wife, Bonnie Lee Harley of Hemphill, mother Minnie Harley of Pineland; a daughter, Renee PARISH of Pineland; three sons, Stanley Harvey of Angleton, and Kelvin Harley and Brent Harley, both of Pineland; a sister, Elizabeth FORE of Pineland; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were hald at 11 a.m. Friday at Strickland Chapel Church of God in Sabine County with Bro. Vance R. Purtell and Bro. Tommy Long officiating. Interment was at Lott Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

Margaret Elaine Wilburn, 67, of Lufkin, died Thursday afternoon in the Nacogdoches Medical Center. She was born in Hemphill, Texas, to Frank and Wilma Huff McClelland. Mrs. Wilburn worked in housekeeping in the Nacogdoches Medical Center and was a member of the Pollok Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband Robert Wilburn of Lufkin, her son Michael Thomas and his wife Bobbie Jo of Lufkin, her daughter Martina Howell and her husband Michael of Conroe, her sisters; Ledia Black of Conroe, Dollie Aden and her husband Jimmy of Broaddus, Wilma Bailey of Newton, Frankie Woodward of Orange, Teresa Bryant and Carter Beam of Nacogdoches, grandchildren; Eric Perry and Melissa, Shelly Van Straten and Aaron, Clint Thomas, Andrew Thomas, great grandchildren; Audrey Kinsley and Kason Van Straten, Summer Perry and Allie Duewall, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 9:00PM, Saturday, October 18, 2014, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM, Sunday, October 19, 2014, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lott Cemetery.
