1. | John Payne was born on 8 Apr 1764 in Fairfax County, Virginia; died on 9 Sep 1837. Notes:
Moved to Kentucky in the mid 1780's. He was arrested by Colonel Levi Todd on 6 September 1786 and threatened to be treated as a deserter until he furnished a substitute for his service. He settled in Scott County at Payne's depot near Georgetown. The Magazine of the Kentucky Historical Society refers to him as General John Payne, and states that he commanded Kentucky troops in the first expedition against the Indians in 1812. He was a State Senator from Scott County from 1830-1832.
According to his son, Asa, he died after being thrown from his horse.
Westerfield's book of Kentucky Genealogical and Biographical Sketches states that he was in the Virginia Militia, and present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, soon after which he settled in Kentucky; was active in the Indian wars on the frontier; a general in the war of 1812, a State senator, a farmer and large slave holder, and died in 1837.

2. | Col. Asa Payne (1.John1) was born on 19 Mar 1788 in Scott County, Kentucky; and died. Notes:
Educated at West Point and also attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1810, he was appointed by President Madison as Indian Sub-agent and stationed at Fort Madison and Fort Snelling. Was a Major in the War of 1812 and aide-de-camp to his father, General John Payne. He was at Fort Meigs during the siege by the British and Indians. After the war he farmed in Scott County and served as Justice of the Peace. (Payne, p. 262).
Asa married Theodocia Turner on 27 Dec 1810 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Theodocia (daughter of Lewis E. Turner and Theodosia Payne) was born on 26 Feb 1788; died on 11 Jun 1841. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

3. | Robert Payne (1.John1) was born on 20 Dec 1789 in Scott County, Kentucky; died on 28 Aug 1827 in Fayette County, Missouri. Notes:
He was a private in James Stucker's Company of Scott County, and as such was one of the men who composed the "Forlorn Hope" at the Battle of the Thames 5 October 1813, a detachment that Col. Richard M. Johnson ordered forward to attract the Indian fire, in order that the remainder of the Regiment might charge whiel the enemy's muskets were being reloaded. This detachment consisted of 20 men...Col. Johnson, who accompanied this detachment, and five others survived the attack, among whom was Robert Payne. He settled in Howard County, Missouri in 1820. He and his wife had six children. (Payne, pp. 262-263).

6. | John Payne (1.John1) was born on 15 Nov 1795 in Scott County, Kentucky; died in 1887 in Warsaw, Gallatin County, Kentucky. Notes:
Served in the War of 1812. In 1814, he received an appointment as Cadet at West Point. He rode to Washington with his Uncle, Richard M. Johnson, later Vice President of the United States, arriving just after the city had been burned. In June 1815 the accidental discharge of a cannon tore off his right arm and blinded him. He was furloughed and granted a pension of $8 per month.
He and his wife had three children.
