2. | Jonathan Henry "J. H." Cooper (1.Dempsey1) was born on 22 Aug 1818 in Mississippi; died on 17 Feb 1897 in Yellowpine Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
FindAGrave shows that Jonathan and Obedience "moved to Pineland, Sabine County, Texas in 1854 from Mississippi. They built their first home, a log house, a short distance from Pineland, and later build a larger house north of the present town site on the east side of Highway 87. He went into the mercantile business and owned a store and a sawmill at Yellowpine, Texas. He was also a farmer and a breeder of livestock. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and he was said to have been one of the best in his community. He was elected Commissioner of the Sabine County Board of Supervisors, and as Commissioner, he ordered the County to buy in 1870 the first iron safe for the records of the County Clerk. Later the courthouse burned and all the records were destroyed."

4. | Martha Cooper (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born about 1840 in Mississippi; died about 1862 in Texas. Notes:
FindAGrave shows that she married J. C. Berryman and died in 1963 (at the improbable age of 120). They are buried at Spring Hill Cemetery. Other sources indicate she died relativerly soon after her marriage. Perhaps she died in 1863 vs. 1963. Kay Parker McCary, in her annotated transcription of the Spring Hill cemetery, shows her as Maragaret Ann vs. Margaret Jane. No dates were inscribed on her tombstone, and McCary estimates them as ca. 1841 - bef. 1880. She also indicates that Margaret was the first wife of Frederick Berryman Sr, not J. C. Berryman.
Jim Cooper, writes, on his "Trails to Texas Blog," http://www.trailstotexas.com/
"Martha Cooper married Frederick Berryman, who has immigrated to the United States from Prussia. Martha died giving birth to their first child, James Charles ["Charley"] Berryman in 1862. Frederick was despondent over the loss. [Martha's father] Jonathan rode on horseback over 20 miles from Hemphill to Brookeland, in Sabine County, and took the infant home to raise to allow Frederick to get his life together. Frederick joined the Confederate Army as a musician, remarried after the war, and raised 11 more children. Charley went on to have 13 children?..[his] youngest child, Bertha Berryman McDaniel?lived to be 101."
Martha married Frederick Berryman before 1862. Frederick was born on 12 Jul 1827 in Prussia; died on 10 May 1901 in Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

5. | Eliza Adeline Cooper (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born about 1841 in Mississippi; died about 1867; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Said to be the daughter of Johnathan H. and Obedience COOPER. FindAGrave shows she was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, as was her husband Andrew Clark. Her grave may be unmarked, as it is not included in Kay Parker McCary's transcription of the Spring Hill Cemetery.
Eliza married Andrew Clark about 1866 in Sabine County, Texas. Andrew (son of William Clark and Mahala Louise Graham) was born on 3 Jul 1839 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 23 Aug 1913 in Yellowpine, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
Children:
- 22. William Henry A. Clark
was born on 20 Sep 1867 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 26 Nov 1950 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.

6. | James Amberson Cooper (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born on 12 Nov 1843 in Hinds County, Mississippi; died on 5 Jan 1927 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Jacks Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Virgie Speights shows his middle name as Anderson, but all other researchers indicate it was actually Amberson. This is supported by the Widow's Application for a Confederate Pension application completed by Amelia Cooper, listing the full name of her husband as James Amberson Cooper. She also referenced that he had previously drawn a pension, citing file number 33200. Ancestry.com shows in their Civil War Service Records database that J. A. Cooper served in the Eleventh Texas Infantry, entering as a private and being discharged as a Corporal.

8. | Jonathan Henry Cooper, Jr. (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born about 1846 in Hinds County, Mississippi; and died. Notes:
May have died young. Not listed with the rest of his siblings on the 1860 Sabine County, Texas census. Said to be buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Sabine County. However, he is not on Kay Parker McCary's annotated index of this cemetery. Perhaps he is an unmarked grave, or buried elsewhere.
|
9. | Lewis Ansel Cooper (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born about 1850 in Hinds County, Mississippi; and died. Notes:
Said to be buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Sabine County. Not listed on Kay Parker McCary's annotated transcription, however, so this might not be correct, or he may have been in an unmarked grave.
|
10. | Elizabeth Alice Cooper (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born on 19 Dec 1852 in Mississippi; and died. Notes:
Appears to have died young, as she is not listed on the 1860 census. Said to be bured at Spring Hill Cemetery in Sabine County. However, she is not on Kay Parker McCary's annotated index of this cemetery. Perhaps she is an unmarked grave, or buried elsewhere.

13. | John Daniel Cooper, M. D. (2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born on 26 Jun 1861 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 10 Dec 1939 in Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
J. D. Cooper, Brookeland, was on a list of 11 members of the Sabine County Medical Society, June 1910, in the TEXA STATE JOURNAL OF MEDICINE, published in 1911.
From FindAGrave:
He was a physician and surgeon who made his home in Brookland, Texas, where he practiced medicine until his death. He had grown up on a farm, but became interested in medicine through Dr. Daniel Matthew Cooper, his father's brother. He studied medicine at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and began his practice in 1895. He later attended Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, Texas and received a degree there in 1908. He was the typical "country doctor" going where ever he was needed, and began his practice on foot if a horse was not available or could not get to the patient quick enough. His services grew indispensable to the many families whom he served for almost a half century. He was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows, and Christian Church, and the State and County Medical Associations.

139. | Lt. Col. Grover Clinton Berryman (58.Grover5, 21.James4, 4.Martha3, 2.Jonathan2, 1.Dempsey1) was born on 23 Oct 1923 in Zavalla, Angelina County, Texas; died on 10 Jul 2015 in Friday Harbor, San Juan County, Washington; was buried in St. Francis Cemetery, Friday Harbor, San Juan County, Washington. Notes:
Lt. Col. Grover (Berry) Clinton Berryman, 91, a longtime resident of Friday Harbor, Washington, passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2015. He was born in Zavalla, Texas on October 23, 1923 to Bertie Meadows and Grover Cleveland Berryman. Relatives recalled that the first plane that many had ever seen circled the town on the day he was born.
Stirred by his interest in model planes and mechanics in general, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He trained as a pilot and was assigned to fly the B24 Liberator for the 5th Army in Italy, where he flew 23 missions over Germany and occupied Europe. On one memorable occasion, his aircraft had to drop out of the group due to the loss of an engine from battle damage. Realizing that solitary bombers were sitting targets, he urgently radioed for fighter escort. He and his crew credited their survival that night to the courage and skill of the Tuskegee Airmen who unhesitatingly responded to their radio call.
He was released to the Air Force Reserves after WWII but was recalled for the Korean conflict. He flew numerous airplanes including the B24, the C124 Globemaster, the C47 (the old Gooney bird, one of his favorites), and the SA16 Albatross. Friends often recounted the time that he flew a B17 under a bridge in Beaumont, Texas.
While based in Bordeaux, France, Berry met Mary Ann Malicki, a recent Penn State graduate who was teaching abroad. A grand courtship ensued as they toured the Swiss and French Alps in his classic Bugatti coupe. Following a year's service in Saudi Arabia, he and Mary Ann were married in Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania, in 1954. His military career spanned the globe from Europe to the Far East, ending with tours of Japan and Vietnam. Lt. Colonel Berryman retired from active duty at McChord AFB in 1970.
He completed additional courses at the University of Washington and went on to enjoy a second career as a woodworking and drafting instructor in Georgia for many years. A testament to the "Greatest Generation", he could build, fix, or create almost anything with his well-stocked workshop. He was tremendously skilled in woodworking, lostwax casting, copper enameling and drawing. He could capture faces and buildings in a rough sketch with a few swift strokes of his pencil, delighting countless children (and adults). .
He took great joy in his many grandchildren, who enjoyed listening to their Grandpap's stories. In addition to his immense enthusiasm for flying, he was also passionate about European sports cars. He raced in road rallies in several states and drove his 1936 Type 57 Bugatti for 50 years. He was a member of the Bugatti Owner's club and the Sports Car Club of San Juan Island.
A complete audiophile, he instilled in his children a lifelong love of music with his epic reel-to-reel classical and folk collection. Well travelled to farflung, desolate regions of the world while piloting for the Air Force, he also enjoyed visiting Europe with his family and friends. The Cotswolds, Devon, Yorkshire, and Derbyshire were particular favorites in England.
He will be remembered by his family as a kind, warm and gentle man. "Praising what is lost makes the remembrance dear." (Shakespeare)
Berry was preceded in death by his brother Julian Berryman.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Ray Berryman, Elaine Schumy (Erik), Paul Berryman (Pauladeceased), Camille Paulsen (Dirk); his seven grandchildren, Patrick and Pierce Berryman, Alex and Johanna Schumy, Marian, Louisa and Susannah Paulsen; his brother, Don Berryman; and his sisters, Marguerite Brusa, Betty Coleman, Kay Berryman and Ellen Cammack.
A funeral Mass was held on July 17, 2015 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Friday Harbor. Interment was at St. Francis cemetery with military funeral honors performed by the Friday Harbor Honor Guard. Remembrances may be sent to the G. C. Berryman Park Bench Memorial Fund (Islanders Bank), or to your favorite charity.
