William Ferguson, pension application 3543, approved October 12, 1899. Date of pension application July 18, 1899. He is 72 years of age and resided in Oakdale, Texas for 66 years. He is in very bad health and a farmer. He enlisted about June 1, 1863 with Company D, Cooks's Regiment, Heavy Artillery and served until the end of the war. He has two cows valued at $16, one year old yearling value $5, one calf worth $4, one horse worth $20, 10 head of hogs valued at $10. In the past two year he has sold one yearling for $5. V.H. Vickers, County Judge. W.T. Pulliam and J.O. Davidson witnesses. Dr. D.M. Cooper states that the applicant is in poor health with chronic colic and general nervous prostration. William Ferguson served with Milam County Guards, Infantry, 27th Brigade, General E.S.C. Robertson commander; Mount Vernon Grays, active Company, Infantry or Calvary, Titus County, 8th Brigade, TST was 5th Sergt., Company E, Volunteers, 11th Brigade, Captain Nathaniel B. Yelverton, Brigade Colonel L.W. Cooper commanding.

Notes:

Casagranda lists him as one of the four children of Elijah and Drucilla Cook Low, however as he is not listed in Schluter and Toole's transcription of the Sabine County, Texas household of his mother Drucilla Low in 1850, when he would have been just 13. However, he is listed in 1860, at age 23. Perhaps he is shown in 1850 on the actual microfilm, but was inadvertantly left out of the transcription. Need to follow up.

In 1870, Elbert Hines, an orphan age 14, and Amanda Hines, an orphan age 10, are living with Isaac and Amanda Low.

Isaac married Nancy Amanda Hines on 2 Nov 1865 in Sabine County, Texas. Nancy (daughter of Elbert Hines and Mahana Melton) was born on 28 Jan 1841; died on 22 Mar 1888; was buried in McCord-Low Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Jackson Green Low is missing from the 1870 Sabine County census. It appears that his wife Alma Scruggs had died, and that his children were living with their grandfather Elmore Harper. When did Alma die, and where was Jackson? On the 1880 Census, Jackson Low was married to Susan Huddleston.

Elbert J. Hines Rites in Laredo

Elbert Jessie Hines, 91, 520 S. Harlandale, died at his home Friday. He was a native of Hemphill, but had resided in this city for 14 years.

He is survived by three sons, S. R. Hines of San Antonio, A. A. Hines of Laredo and C. C. Hines of Flint, Mich.; and five daughters, Mrs. W. E. Smith of Fort Worth, Mrs. Mattie Mellon of Refugio, Mrs. T. C. Grimes of Mission, and Mrs. Ruth Richter and Mrs. Alice Carpenter, both of San Antonio.

The body was sent Saturday to Lareod, for services and interment in that city.

LaDarla Walker Keith posted that she married James Madison CONNER, son of Lewis Conner and Martha Ann Weeks. She stated that Amanda and James homesteaded in DeBeca/Roosevelt County, New Mexico before returning to Wise County, Texas. They had three sons, one of them being her grandfather.

Mrs Mary Jennie Mason, 86, died Friday, February 9, 1962 about 2:00 AM in the home of her daughter, Mrs Essie Thompson in Bon Ami community near Kirbyville. She had been ill for some time. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Thompson home. Rev Roy Harrell of Newton and Rev Jack Lee of Jasper, Baptist ministers, will officiate. Mrs Mason was born in Sabine County and was the widow of the late Shad Mason. She had lived in Bon Ami community for the past 50 years and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter and one sister, Mrs Sam Mason; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

Mary Sibley Greer

Mary Sibley Greer, 85, of Pt. Acres died Tuesday, Jun 17, 1997, at a Pt. Arthur convalescent center.

She was a native of Sabine County and had lived in the Orange-Pt. Acres area several years.

Survivors: sons, Joe Greer and Sibley Greer, both of Pt. Acres, and Sidney Greer of LaBelle; a daughter, Dorothy HOOKER of Splendora, ten grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pat A. Riley Funeral Home's chapel in Nederland. Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Jefferson county.

Severne Low

Severne Low, 82, of Dallas died at 10:25 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 1996, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

Born March 26, 1913 in Sabine County as a daughter of the late Sallie (Howard) and Thomas Wright Low, she had lived in Dallas 60 years. Miss Low was a statistician with Sears, Roebuck & Company and a member of Grace Methodist Church.

Survivors: a niece, Nancy Schober of Dallas; two nephews, Tom Low of Ft. Worth and Paul Low of New Jersey; a cousin, Thelma Cavender of Hemphill; four great-nieces; and a great-nephew.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hempill with Charles Cox officiating. Interment followed at Harper's Chapel Cemetery in Sabine County.

Bradie C. Smith

Bradie C. Smith, 95, of Jasper died at 5:34 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at Lakes Regional Medical Center in Jasper.

She was born April 29, 1902, in the Clarktown community as a daughter of the late George B. and Winnie (Low) Clark and was a member of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was a former longtime resident of Sabine County and had lived in the Jasper area for 20 years.

Survivors: two sons, Arlis Smith of Jasper and Harold Smith of Newton; eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of the Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Mike Smith and Clarence Howell officiating. Interment was in Fairmount Cemetery in Fairmount.

V. T. MASON, 72 DIES OF SEIZURE
Jasper Residents' Rites Will Be Tuesday At 10

JASPER (Spl) ? Funeral services for V. T. Mason, 72, of Jasper will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in J. O. Stringer Funeral Home. Masonic graveside services will be held at Fairmount Cemetery in Hemphill.

Mason died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday of an apparent heart attack while attending the Friendship Baptist Church homecoming in Hemphill.

Mason was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jasper and the Littletown Fowler Masonic Lodge in Hemphill. He was also a former member of the Jasper Lions Club, the Jasper Fire Department and the Chamber of Commerce. He taught school in Sabine County and at one time was the manager and co-owner of Mason Furniture Co. in Jasper.

Mason retired from the Texas Employment Commission in 1961 after 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Effie Mason; his mother, Mrs. Dora Mason of Dallas, and six brothers, Carvy and Loy Mason, both of Dallas, Eldon and Herman Mason, both of Center and Rufus and William A. Mason, both of Fort Worth.

His Texas Death Certificate shows that he was a retired accountant/bookkeeper, and surived by his wife, Mrs. Maulee Mason.

At the time of the 1940 Census, he was living in Dallas with his brother Carvy Mason, along with the Easley family of Sabine County (the family of Carvy's wife, Lillie).

He has a military grave marker, embossed with a cross and the following "Eldon B. Mason, PFC US Army, World War II, 1915-1990"

Madie Duhon

Funeral services for Madie Low Duhon, 82, of Hemphill were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1994, at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Ralph Dion and Bro. W. Clarence Howell officiating. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

She died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at Hemphill Care Center.

Mrs. Duhon was born June 18, 1912, at Six Miles as a daughter of the late Jackson G. Low and Hattie (Smith) Low. She was a longtime resident of Pt. Arthur before returning to Sabine County in 1972. Mrs. Duhon was a member of the Baptist Church and a retired clerk for Gulf Oil Company.

She is survived by a sister, Doris Moses of Dallas.

Doris Low Moses, born July 18, 1918, in Hemphill, passed away Feb. 4, 2005 in Dallas. She had resided in Dallas since 1954. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Allen A. Moses, her parents Jackson Green Low and Hattie Smith Low (whose ancestors were early settlers of Sabine County), brothers Vessie Low, Herbert Low, and Odis Low, sisters, Verdie FORSE, Novie RICE, and Madie DUHON. Survivors includer her daughter, Theresa Moses DANIEL of Dallas, and nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life was held Feb. 8 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Tera Conn Childers

Tera Conn Childers, 85, of Jasper died Sunday, Sept. 10, 1995, at Mary E. Dickerson Memorial Hospital in Jasper.

Mrs. Childers was a native of Sabine County and former resident of San Augustine County and Buna. She was a homemaker and longtime member of the Jasper Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors, a son, William Grady Childers Jr. of Houston; daughters, Betty Campbell of Nederland and Lou Yeates of Jasper; a sister, Carrie Scurlock of Buna; a brother, Woodrow Conn of Kingston, Tennessee; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lamar Allen Childers.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home--Jasper Chapel. Interment was at Byerly Campground Cemetery near Jasper.

Carrie Conn Scurlock

Carrie Conn Scurlock, 85, of Buna died Sunday Sept. 4, 2005.

Mrs. Scurlock was born Jan. 11, 1920 in Bronson as a daughter of the late Florence Drucilla and William Henry CONN, the youngest of 14 children. She was the owner/operator of Scurlock's Florist in Buna for several years. Survivors: her husband of 56 years, Robert SCURLOCK; daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Karl PARKER of Kingwood, and Donna and Eddie FRANKLIN, Florence SMITH, and Robbie and Bill GOODIN, all of Buna; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at E. E. Stringer Chapel in Buna. Interment followed at Antioch Cemetery near Buna. Services were under the direction of E. E. Stringer Funerals & Cremation of Buna.

I was not able to locate the family of Ferman Fullen in Robert Cecil McDaniel's transcription of the 1920 Sabine County census. However, they were listed on the 1920 Texas Soundex as residents of Sabine County, as follows. The soundex references Vol. 142, ED 170, Sht 3, Line 18. I examined the actual microfilm and did find the family. The microfilm copy was very light and nearly illegible, however. It appears that the soundex information was probably correct.

According to a copy of an obituary for F. E. Fullen, not fully dated or referenced, "ORANGE, May 11--Ferman Egbert Fullen, 48, of Orange, an employee of the Consolidated Steel corporation, died at a local hospital at 7 a.m. Thursday as a result of injuries sustained when he fell several hours earlier at the shipyard. He was working as a carpenter. He was a brother of Otis Fullen, vice president of the Security State bank. He was said to have suffered a skull fracture in a fall into the hold of a ship. Mr. Fullen and family have lived in Orange for about three years. Funeral services awaited contacts with the two sons in the army, one of whom, Arlis Fullen, 19, was awarded the silver star for gallantry during the Tunisian campaign. He later was wounded in Sicily and is now in a hospital at Martinsburg, West Virginia. The other boy in the army Pvt. Marvin Fullen, is stationed at Boise, Idaho.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Arrie Fullen, Orange; three daughters, Mrs. Hubert Deering, Houston; Mrs. J.D. Parker and Mrs. Madye Hennigan, both of Port Arthur; four sons, Walter Fullen, Newton; G.B. Fullen, Orange; Marvin and Arlis Fullen, both in the U.S. Army, three brothers, Otis and William B. Fullen, both of Beaumont, and J. Vertis Fullen, Newton; six sisters, Mrs. Kelly Fogg, New Orleans, Mrs. Charles Atkins, El Paso, Mrs. Basil Kee, Beaumont, Mrs. Ramsay Simmons, Mrs. J.B. Bobbitt, and Mrs. Ramsay Smith, all of Newton.
