Referred to by his friends as "Long Charlie", he was vitally interested in the growth and economy of Sabine County. He was a merchant, farmer and owned a sawmill. His interest in the growth of Sabine County was such that he personally hired a geologist to come from Pennsylvania to test for oil, gas and other minerals. He hired politicians to attend and speak at his annual July 4th picnics, which were held at his old home in Isla. These picnics were open to the public and were always well attended. His aim in thi was to improve the knowledge and friendship between the politicians and the people they represented. Charles lost heavily in the depression, and also in the Texas Land Bank, so much in fact, that on Feb. 9, 1930, he suffered a stroke, from which he died two days later. He was buried at the old Vickers Cemetery. His beloved Wife, Kate...was buried beside her husband. their children were also buried in the same cemetery except when stated otherwise. (White and Toole, p 38).
The only possession we (the family) have of Harrision Vickers, Jr. and his son, Charles Harris Vickers, is a piece of gold. This money was given to Charles by his father when he was seven years old, in exchange for a 'prize pig' of which Charles was overly fond, and more than a little reluctant to part with. He was so grieved over the exchange that he never spent the money, and when my mother, Hazel, was seven years of age, he gave her this little gold piece" writes Mrs. R.G. Sherrod, a member of the JFG Chapeter of the DRT. (White and Toole, p 39)

Mrs. Mollie Mason Jones Wright
Mrs. Mollie Wright celebrated her 98th birthday on May 2, 1863, with members of the family present. Last year there was a big celebration with friends and neighbors from far and near wishing her well. This celebration was quiet because of her failing health. A year ago Aunt Molly, as practically everyone calls her, was in excellent health, able to do light housework, and attended church regularly. Now she is still mentally alert, still able to get around and still enjoys having company, but her steps are a wee bit feebler. Sometimes she does not feel quite like attending services and housework is a little bit beyond her capabilities. Her eyesight is failing and when told that her photograph was good, she said, "I wish I could see that."

This cemetery is located north of Hwy 6 just east of the Pendleton Bridge. From the bridge go about 1 mile to Merritt Mtn. Road. Turn north and follow the road to the end. From this point you will have to climb the hill. The cemetery is about 200 yds. west of where the fire tower used to stand.
Most of these graves were marked with wooden plaques which have since faded away, but at the time transcribed were still readable. Lily Thurman knew where they were buried.

Elaine Brown was born July 30, 1917 in the Isla Community in Sabine County to Robert and Abby Ola Mason Harris. She entered into rest October 1, 2007 in Lufkin. 157. | James H. Edward "Ed" Strickland (77.Mary4, 27.Elizabeth3, 7.Sam2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born about 1905 in Texas; and died. Notes:
ASSUMED this is James H. E(dward) Strickland, and that he was called Ed. I made this assumption because Carl Evan's research shows that Ney Carter and his only brother Ed married two sisters, Nora Humble and Elizabeth Humble.
James H.E. and Ney Carter appear to be the only two sons in the family, therefore it seems that James must have been called Ed, unless Carl Evan's research was incorrect.

218. | Willie Bradford Eicke, Jr. (159.Lura5, 77.Mary4, 27.Elizabeth3, 7.Sam2, 1.Elizabeth1) was born on 29 Apr 1933 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 22 Oct 2020 in Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas. Notes:
William "Bud" Bradford Eicke, Jr., formerly of Bay City, Texas, passed away on October 22, 2020 at the age of 87. He was born on April 29, 1933 to William Bradford Eicke and Lura Mae (Strickland) Eicke in Hemphill, Texas. Bud was raised in Bronson, Texas and graduated from high school at the age of 15. He joined the Army and spent time overseas in Metz France. After the Army, Bud joined Sun Oil Company (SUNOCO) in Texas as a "doodlebugger" searching for oil reserves across the southwest. While working in west Texas, Bud met Deloris (Dee) Fockler while she was working in a restaurant. They fell in love and married, eventually raising five boys.
In 1963, Bud and Dee settled down in Vidor, Texas. Bud continued to progress his career with SUNOCO, and started tinkering with a new technology ? color TV's. Bud would spend some of his evenings with friends and family carrying a collection of vacuum tubes and "optimizing" everyone's color TV sets. Bud and the family would make special trips to Bronson and Lake City Michigan, so the boys could spend time with their grandparents ? going fishing, shooting, farming, horse riding, milking cows and bailing hay.
In 1970, the family moved to Plano, Texas so Bud could work at the SUNOCO Dallas office. He was recognized as a Senior Geophysicists. He was very proud and would tell everyone he was the first Senior Geophysicist without a college degree. While working for SUNOCO, Bud travelled all over the world including two trips to the North Pole looking for oil.
Bud worked for SUNOCO for over 30 years and retired at 55 years old.
In 1988, Bud moved to Bay City, Texas so he could spend more time fishing in the gulf. While at Bay City, Bud started a second career working as a sales representative for Trojan Explosives. Bud developed a shaped charge explosive that more efficiently focused the energy wave so lighter weight explosives could be used for oil exploration and is continued to be used today in seismic research. With Trojan, Bud travelled all over Mexico and South America helping those countries establish their oil exploration industries.
Bud lived in Bay City, Texas over the last 20 years and would enjoy his children and grandchildren when they would come down to visit. He always took them to Matagorda beach and he enjoyed watching them play in the sand and water. Some days he would take his boat and grandkids out fishing or just for a ride. Afterward, he always took them to his local watering hole, K-2 Steakhouse, and would fill them up with food and brag to everyone what great grandkids he had. We will forever be grateful to his K-2 friends. They became our friends and we truly loved them as they were "his Bay City Family".
Bud is survived by his sons; Michael Dennis Eicke and wife, Karen of Benbrook, Texas; Charles Eicke and wife, Rose of The Colony, Texas; Philip Barry Eicke of Trenton, Texas; and George David (Sam) Eicke of Wylie, Texas; his grandchildren, Mark William Eicke, Jessica Eicke-Reinartz, Alex Eicke, Brandon Hartwell, Cody Eicke, Ryan Eicke, Jeremy Eicke, and Joshua Eicke, and his brother; Paul Eicke, and sister; Emily McClinton and husband, Herman, and many Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; William Bradford and Lura Mae Eicke; his son, William Bradford Eicke; his younger brothers, Cecil and George Eicke; and his older sister, Louise Eicke-Childs.

Cheryl Marie Nethery, aged 55, passed away Monday, July 1, 2024, in Webster, Texas after a long illness. Born on April 21, 1969, in Houston, Texas to Robert Gene Nethery and Annie DeAlva Davis Nethery, Cheryl was a spirited individual whose life was marked by her generosity and humor.
Cheryl graduated from South Houston High School in 1987 and later achieved both her bachelor's and master's degrees while working full-time. Her academic dedication paved the way for a successful career. Cheryl was a respected HR Professional, initially with Brown and Root and KBR, before she found her passion in the Oil Field Drilling Business as a Regional HR Manager.
Beyond her professional life, Cheryl was deeply committed to animal welfare, often supporting animal charities, rescues, and shelters.
