David served as Captain in Company G, 75th Illinois Regiment Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He resided in Ashton, Illinois, where he was postmaster.

In 1847 he removed with his brother to Ogle County, Illinois. In 1850 he removed to California, where he died.
