  1. 1.  Alexander S. Blackburn was born about 1797 in Tennessee; died on 2 Feb 1863 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.

    Notes:

Mary Frances Smith Fisher shows that he servied in Pvt. L. C. Griffith's Co, Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812, enlisting on Oct. 29, 1814 and being discharged on 24 Mar 1815. She also notes that the family can be found on the Marion County, Mississippi census in 1830 and 1840, and in Washington Parish, LA in 1850.

His widow, Martha. applied for a pension based on his service during the War of 1812. He was shown as marrying Martha on 18 Jun 1820. He enlisted for the war on 29 Oct 1814, and was discharged on 24 mar 1815. He died in St. Tammany Parish, LA on 2 Feb 1863. Martha died in 1889. The Pension number is WC 30613, the Bounty Land Number 39669 80 50 and 10809 80 55.

He sold a tract of land on 27 Mar 1817 to James Scott Jrs. in East Feliciana Parish (Notorial Records, Book A, Page 319, East Feliciana Parish, Clinton, LA). Book B, page 30, of the West Feliciana Parish Notorial Records, St. Francisville, LA, shows that he and his wife Marry Ann sold property to John Randolph.

Bettye Bragg Wagstaff showed him as born in Feliciana Parish, LA, which contradicts the census information of Tennessee.

    Email from Bettye Bragg Wagstaff:

Susan Blackburn was the daughter of Alexander S. Blackburn and his second wife, Martha Cole.

I have been in touch with a Bickham descendant, and she gave me info on the Bickhams. It seems that Susan and her parents moved to Louisiana (Can't remember the parish right now) where Alexander died and Susan married an unknown Bickham just before the Civil War. Evidently this Bickham was killed in the war, because she then married James Bailey (AKA Baylie) and they came to Texas bringing her two Bickham children and her mother Martha Blackburn. They settled in Sabine County and had several Bailey children. James Bailey did not appear on the census after 1870 so I just assumed he died. Wrong! According to the many Bailey descendents living around here today, James just went back to Louisiana, found him another woman and raised another family. The Bickham children were Hardy Alexander Bickham and Zurada. Hardy is buried in the Rosevine Cemetery and Zurada in Bronson. I have been trying to find out who is buried beside Zurada. No luck so far.

Susan's mother, Martha is buried in Brookland, she died in 1889 while living there with grand- children.

Jackie Bickham writes that Susan Blackburn and her second husband Jasper Newton Bailey were the parents of 1.Hope Bailey 2.Sedonia Bailey 3.Trust Bailey 4.James Franklin Bailey

    Notes:

Newton Historical Commission, Pauline Hines, Compiler "Newton County Nuggests: A Collection of True Stories By Newton County Folk" (Nortex Press, A Division of Eakin Publications, Inc, Austin, Texas, published in 1986), had an article about R. B. Bickham, reprinted from a newspaper article. He was a native of Angelina County and became a progressive leader in the Deweyville area about 1920. His wife, Sallie, was a native of Nacogdoches. Their only daughter is Maxine Bickham Davis. Bickham began his experience in the timber and lumber industry in early boyhood...and was one of the foremost profitable sawmill operators in the Newton County area. He favored progress and generously supported better roads, timber conservation, civic and religious improvements and good schools. He believed in giving a cordial welcome to desirable newcomers. He became a merchant in Deweyvill about 1945 along with his timber operations. On page 361 of the same book it was noted that Richard Bickham's business partner, Hager Davis, later became his son-in-law, and that they operated under contract with Kirby Lumber company. A flood in 1953 almost destroyed this mill, which did not completely shut down until 1954.

The Bickham's were the first residents of Deweyville to install a telephone. Mr. Bickham also built a movie theatre that he operated for three years, operating on Friday and Saturday evenings. (ibid, p. 397)
