Keton Jones McLemore

Notes:

Sometimes shown as being born in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. Melba states that of all the descendants of Keton Jones McLemore that she has interviewed, no on can state with certainty how the city of Louisville, or where the origin of his being born into a family of 13 children originated, so both these are still speculative and may be incorrect.

The youngest daughter of Keton Jones McLemore, Rosa, was interviewed by a grandson in 1941, and her detailed description of the family makeup was the starting point for much of the subsequent genealogical research done regarding the Keton Jones McLemore family. Rosa indicated that Keton was born when his mother was 60 years old, and that he was the youngest of 13 children, 11 boys and 2 girls. He was educated in Virginia and worked both as a school teacher and as a Methodist Minister. She further indicated that he died in Bastrop County at the age of 63 of gangrene. When son Felix Harrelson McLemore applied for an insurance policy, he also listed his father's cause of death as gangrene.

Keton is thought, but not proven, to be a brother of Nicholas McLemore, to whom he lived next to in Sabine Parish, Louisiana at the time of the 1850 Federal Census. Based on naming patterns, it is also ASSUMED, but not proven, that both are sons of Sterling McLEMORE of Kentucky, and grandsons of Ephraim McLEMORE and Hannah HUDSPETH.

Both Rosa and her brother Pleasant instead indicated that Keton Jones McLemore was a son of Samuel McLemore, an immigrant. In a 1954 letter to his grand niece, Ivy, Pleasant McLemore writes that "My grandfather Samuel McLemore was a lord, he disowned nobility, the title also, married and went to Kentucky, bought a Tobacco plantation, and became wealthy and raised 11 sons to manhood, father was the youngest, his dad sent him to Harvard...I know nothing about his brothers, though corespondd for some time with his nephew of Alabama and his youngest son came to see me when he was released from the Navy, his dads name is Carl S. McLemore a farmer in Scottsboro, Alabama."

Melba Gene McLemore noted that Pleasant was prone to boasting, and known at times to enhance the truth. One example of this is the fact that there are no records that Keton ever attended Harvard.

The family of Carl S. McLemore, born ca 1898 in Alabama, is shown in this index. It appears that Carl is a son of William McLemore of Tennessee, but it is not currently known how William McLemore fits into the larger McLemore family.

Melba Gene McLemore writes that "on March 4, 1850 - Many, Sabine Parish, La. a charter is issued for a Masonic Lodge, with K.J. being listed as Worshipful Master." Furthermore, the book titled "Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Louisiana " published by the order of the Grand Lodge, New Orleans, 1852 shows that K.J. McLemore was a member of the Many Lodge, #88, and expelled in 1852. (Perhaps because he moved to Texas?) It was noted in this same book that N.H. McLemore was rejected in 1852.

Melba also indicated that on 26 Jun 1851, Nicholas H. McLemore, in consideration of the sum of $150 sold to a third party property that had formerly been owned by K.J. McLemore, in the State of Louisiana, Parish of Sabine.

The following letters, written by K.J. McLemore to his son Felix, were provided by Melba Gene McLemore:

East Waco May 27th 1867
Written to Felix H. McLemore

Dear Son, having just met with Tom and Sam Mays, I avail myself of the opportunity of writing to you by them as I have written repeatedly by mail without getting any answer and I am now in great haste and cannot write much. I have lost two of my mules-John and Kit together with a small mare and I am fearful that they are stolen. I had them day before yesterday and yesterday ------- and jack along. I ----- and have been huting this day and cannot hear anything of them. I have been carrying on a slaughterhouse in East Waco but intend quitting as I am not making anything and I intend coming back as soon as I can if, however I have lost my mules it will be out of my power to come without help and I may want you to com and help me. If I do, I will write soon. We are all well. You have a brother here that you neve saw, born 6th past month named Rufus Walter. "Not Bill Walt" He is a noble specimen of his species. Tom Mays told me he saw you a short time ago which was the first I have heard certain of you since I saw you. I have not tried to write all I wish but it would suffice that I have not seen any country since I left Bastrop that I like as well as Bastrop. There is more horse stealing, murdering, etc. in this than any country I have ever lived in. Bell and Margaret are at work in a large spinning factory at one dollar and ten cents a day and both can soon clothe themselves well. I have ---- $70 due me here and as ---- square with my little affairs. I am determined to leave here. I have not heard from George or Philip, Wright or Thad since I have been here. If you are not engaged come up and see us and bring a work horse or two with you, so that I can come back. If Mrs. BATEY has never got her money from Hunt County, if you or any of you come properly authorized by Power of Attorny, I will go with you out there. I must stop. May 30th As Tom and Sam Mays have not come yet, but are camped some 4 miles back I now proceed to add that I have found my mules but I do not know how long I may keep them as horse stealing is the order of the day here. There has been a good many stolen from East Waco since I have been here. We are having a great abundance of rain and I look for sickness and feel anxious to leave here. In fact I would do so immediately if I could and shall be sure to do so in a month. If I can possibly close with my business. Algerine PERKINS comes to see me occasionally. Preaches ----- Sunday, he is still the same akward -----. I do no see much improvement, if any. They are trying to hold district court here but I do not think they have qutie got their jury made up. They have summonded a great many negroes. God! I pity my country. Tell Walt I saw his friend John DAVIS some time ago. He was trafficking round with a wagon said he had not home. I think he will never pay Walt though he spoke of the debt. I want you to write immediately on the receipt of this. I have written to you several & rec'd no answer. I wrote to BACHMAN about a month ago to inquire after you, but have no answer from him either. I now no nothing more to write that may interest you. You can ride here in 2 or 2 days and if you are not too closely engaged I hope you will do so and I repeat if Mrs. BATEY or any of you come I will go with you to Hunt County. Dear Son, After waiting until my patience has become exhausted, I again resume the pen, hoping to be more fortunate in obtaining an answer than I have been here tofore. You will see that I am still at Seguin, simply from the fact that I have not been able to get away, tho I am still determined to go on West, or rather South. I have truly but little to write that can interest you, let it suffice we are all well or tolerably so. Just now Rufus has been quiet sick, is now quite pert again. Bob still has the 3rd day chills, but they do not seem to hurt him much. I have only had one letter from you since I left your house & none from any other source. Amanda red'd on from Thad about 2 weeks since. He was then well, but had been sick some. He was then at Wright's in Clinton, but was going the next day to Lavacca with his team. Hauling is now a good price. $2.00 per 100 lbs. from Lavacca to Seguin & 2 to Austin. Phillip will start in a day or two. He would perhaps be gone now, but was kept home on account of Amanda. She had a daughter born day before yesterday. I may make a trip below myself before I go on South. If I do I will drive an ox team & let Bob drive my mules. I could get stocks here to manage or carry West if I would rather gather them, but I sould not undertake to do that, as it would almost be impossible owing to the mesquite brush. You would be surprised to see how this country has grown up. It is next thing to an impossibility to gather stock here-ther has been an abundance of rain here during the last 4 or 5 weeks and the grass indeed fine. Crops are very good as a general thing, tho the cotton worm has been preying on the cotton crop for some time. Most of the cotton that I see is now bare of foilage. I am indeed very anxious to hear from you & know how you are getting along & what you intend or think of doing. I am told there will be no difficulty in getting stocks to manage out West & I will use every effort in my power to get a good stock to manage in the spring. If you was here with a good team, I suspedt you could make more in one or two trips than you will make in your whole years hard work-What is Walt doing? And what does he talk of doing.-I must close as (Babe) Amanda's little girl is waiting to carry my letter to the office. I shall expect an immediate answer & if I don't get it, I shall be a little ashy. The family all join me in best wishes to you & yours, together with kind regards to Walt & Family. (Notes from Melba Gene McLemore: The letter above was written to my Great-great Grandfather, Felix Harrelson McLemore from his father, Keton Jones McLemore. Walt (to whom Keton sends his regards at the end of the letter) is most likely Walter Worsham BATEY, Felix McLemore's Father-in-Law. Felix's little grandson is my great grandfather, Walter Keton McLemore, who was one year old on the day this letter was written. Walter Keton McLemore would raise my father after the death of my grandfather, Eugene Allen McLemore.

My dear son, having written 3 letters to you without obtaining any answers and having become weary on that account I now . . . once more, hoping ... successful in obtaining an answer to it. . I have only but little to write of interest, let it suffice, we are all tolerable well now. I wrote you about the death of your little brother Rufus which I suppose you got, we have all been sick and at the time Rufus died we were expecting Adaline to die, but she has recovered and is as playful today as usual. I am still living at the . place, & I reckon will be compelled to stay untill I can raise a crop as any sickness has put me in debt and I do not see how I can get out without raising a crop of cotton. I have not .. the place yet but think I can do so. There is two concrete houses of 2 rooms each and 3 log cabins . . . good lots . . of land under . . . If I . I will be compelled to hire some help unless you will come & join me in cultivating it. I would much prefer going on out to Bee or Nueces counties. The people out there I learn are all doing . . good crops there this season and have a market for their beef at St. Mary's or Rock Port & Corpus Christi. There is a man now stopping in sight of me who lives out there near Page's [?] Store, he says they have twice the money in circulation out there than we have here with no clashing & fussing about politics. Here it is a continual clash. Enough to turn a man's brain. Since the elections the Negroes have become more self important and impudent than before and that will be the finale of the matter God only knows.---- I saw Pat ..'s wife in Seguin not long since, but did not have time to talk much with her. She begged me to come back to Papalota , she said they were all getting sick out there. Old Dave Calahan still lives at the same old place, has a very large stock & is entirely independent. Bill Miller is said to be rich in stock & money. Sam Smith is shipping beeves and I learn is doing well. Old Anderson Williams lives at his old place on the Medio, Peter Degat [?] at his old place. Major Stein is merchandising on Popalota, Old Billy .. Is back there. Charly Megesly [?] lives at the reef near Corpus. I now know of nothing more to write. If I was not so hard run [?] I would come immediately to see you, but it is out of my power. I am trying to get loading to start to the Post. I will go as soon as I can. Prob.[?] will start tomorrow or next day. I heard from Thad not long since on his way to Austin & was sick. Dear Son, Yours of the 4th Inst. is received and agreeable to my usual custom of promptitude in my correspondance. I hasten to reply. Have nothing of great interest to write. Let it suffice we are all well and have had last night and today a fine rain Which we thought we were needing very much as the ground was so dry that we were unable to plow or plant. I have been coinsaratively idle for 2 weeks or near that time, have not planted anything but a few vegetables. Irish Potatoes, Peas, Sowed Cabbage Lettuce, Mustard KC and a little Corn for early roasting ears. The corn is killed and if I could have plowed I should have been done planting corn & perhaps cotton which would no doubted have been labor in vain.-I now think I will not plant corn for 10 days yet. Say the last of this or 1st of next month as I feel sure we may expect a cold spell about 17th next month, being Easter Sunday and full moon 2 days before. It will be very apt to come, and in planting any corn I wish to plant, so as to secure my crop against any severe weather we may have about that time and it is a matter of great importance with the farmer to secure a good stand at the first planting. I am indeed quite uneasy on account of Thad, his trip to La. Particularly in company with the Characters he is with is unsafe & I shall suffer on his account untill I find he has returned in safety. You said that your country had filled with desperados and horse thieves and I learn that such is the case here and am credibly informed that there have been some 6 or 7 hanged by mobs for horse stealing on the San Marcos and in Caldwell County. Mexicans generally I believe. I should feel no fears of John Wilson, he is no doubt a bad man and mean enough to murder, or do anything, but he is no doubt a great coward, but as caution is the parent of safety, I should not find myself in his way, but be prepared and if I could prove his threats and meet with him I would certainly take care of myself if possible--If you hear from Thad, don't fail to let me know immediately, --- I rec'd. a letter from your cousin Jack yesterday, he was then at your cousin Eliza Thompsons in Travis Co. & I have just answered his letter, directed my letter to Onion Creek, care of Sterling J. Wright, and if Jack should be at your home, as he spoke something in his letter of coming there, you can inform him of that fast. Amanda & her children are at my house. Ebner having gone below. They are not well. Manda and two of the children have been having chills. I must now close & do not know when you will hear from me again as I am writing on my last paper, using my last envelop & no money to buy more, with gloomy prospects for provisions, but having worked through so long I still expect to make out. I am very anxious to have Mag at home, but see no way of getting her here. In Kathy Casagranda's 1850 Sabine Parish Census Transcription, she indicated that in 1846 K.J. McLemore was Assessor and that an R.J. (sic) McLemore was Captain of Police Jury Ward Two. As of 1850, K.J. was shown as Sheriff. (p. 14).

Casagranda notes that the Nicholas McLemore family was living in the 1860 census with children James, Robert, Richard and Martha still at home. A direct male descendant of Keton McLemore was a participant in the Morrison DNA study. The kit number was 35844, and this DNA was a high definition match to two other McLemore's (not previously proven to be related), as well as with a McElmurry from Kentucky

Keton's descendant was a match to a descendant of Wright McLemore of Arkansas, matching in 24 of 25 markers. Wright and Keton lived in adjoining households at the time of the 1830 Richland County, Arkansas census. Keton's descendant was also a high resolution match, 24 of 25 markers, with a direct male descendant of John McLemore, born 1822 in North Carolina, who later migrated to Georgia and Texas. He moved to Jasper and Newton Counties, Texas, just across the border from Sabine Parish, Lousiana, where Keton McLemore lived for some period of time. The markers that differ are, in each case, rapidly mutating markers.

The following letter was written by Wright's widow some two weeks after the tragedy:

The Late Tragedies at McDade From the News

MCDADE. January 14, 1881 (sic)-Now while the horrible tragedy that was enacted at this place on Christmas eve and day is going the rounds of the press, just as correspondents see fit to clothe, and as reporters get it, I, a widow of one of the victims, claim a hearing. Three weeks have passed since the McLemore and Batey families received their double blow. Life with its duties and cares are before us, while behind us lies the shadow of our murdered dead and heart wounds that time can never heal.

The Bastrop Advertisor, containing an account of the triple lynching in Texas, as taken from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, is before me; also the reported interview with F. H. McLemore. It seems that it was proved at the inquest that Thad McLemore was under arrest, charged with burglary; that Wright McLemore and Henry Pfeiffer were under a nominal bond for cattle-stealing when taken from the saloon. That Jack, Azberry and Haywood Batey, Charley Goodman, Burt Hasley and Robert Stevens came in town next day defient, trying to learn the fate of their friends; that all were old residents, and all were under bad repute except Jack Batey. Thad McLemore was under arrest through charges by S. E. Walker, as was ascertained afterward. I hope that Thad died in ignorance of the latter fact, for he thought Walker a friend.

As to Wright McLemore, my husband, being under a nominal bond for cattle-stealing, there is no truth in it. His accusers have not, nor can not, come forth! That all were old residents, and under bad repute, is another untruth. Wright McLemore had only been in the county six months, was almost an entire stranger. We had been living in McDade only about two and a half months. My husband was old and badly crippled with rheumatism, an object of pity to anyone who had a spark of that element. He felt that his life was nearly over, and came here to spend his remaining days near his brothers. The southern and north-western counties know W. K. McLemore; Bastrop did not.

Thad McLemore and his brother Felix were volunteers from here in the Confederate army; served their time, came back, married and settled down in this county, where they have lived ever since in good repute; and yet one of those brothers, while in custody, was taken by a mob from a town he had helped to build, at an early hour, and on an evening when such a thing would be more difficult to perform than at any other time, carried out and hanged, and McDade knew nothing of it until the next day.

And that next day! Oh, it is a deed worthy of being handed down to posterity with the Alamo!

As to the Batey crowd going in armed and defiant, that is also false. It is true they went in together. It is a custom of old Mrs. Batey to get all of her family together on Christmas day. They boys said they would ride into town to see what was going on; and come back for an early dinner. They were not drinking; none were armed except Haywood Batey and Charley Goodman; the latter never used his pistol, it being on his person all the time, and turned the ball that wounded him. Haywood Batey had only four charges in his, so that might account for the miraculous escape of Milton and Bishop, as there were from sixty to one hundred shots! I saw them as they rode into town, and a few minutes later Azberry Batey rode up to my door to see if the news he had heard was true. I think the very last rational words he ever spoke were to me. I saw him fifteen minutes later lying in the streets dead. I see from the Bastrop Advertisor that it is generally supposed that the lynching was the outgrowth of a vigilant committee organized in McDade after the shooting of Heffington, of Lee County, and that the McLemore brothers were suspected as being implicated. My husband did not know Heffington.

Thad McLemore left town before the train came down that Fitzpatrick, the accused, was on. We knew nothing of a man being shot until the following Monday. The shooting was done on Saturday night. In a special from McDade to The Galveston News, dated December 25, it was stated that Wright McLemore happened to be present when the others were taken out. Since them The News has come out with an editorial which should elect him for our next governor, if such a man could be spared from the press. Texas, the empire State of the Union, has a constitution that demands the right to say who shall and who shall not be put to death.

The Globe-Democrat reporter, in copying from notes made during his interview with Felix McLemore, was sadly out of time; but then he had been at the scene of carnage, and I suppose had caught the infection so it will have to be excused. Felix is well known in this county and wants it distinctly understood that he emphatically denies having once said, "I can prove this and so." He told the reporter from the beginning that he knew nothing about it only what his family and friends had told him; he was not home at the time, and only stayed a short time when he did go. He made no allusions as to his dead brother's families being dependent on him for a support. Everyone in that mob knew Thad McLemore was the father of six children, all under twelve years of age, and left without a maintenance. The part referred to where Thad had a conversation with Goodman and Fitzpatrick is all wrong. Felix has the letter now which my husband wrote him after the death of Heffington, containing the substance of what he related to the reporter. He is not staying from home through any fears of killing or being killed. He is a living flesh and blood man, with perfect organization and, it is presumable, he has the power of feeling. I can establish all and more than is contained in this article and earnestly request that you give it publication.

Melba Gene McLemore writes "A three day search in Oct. 2000 of the Bastrop Co. Courthouse records, index books and court jackets produced no record of Wright ever being charged with cattle theft as reported in newspapers. Wright is buried along with his brother Thaddeus Koesko McLemore in unmarked graves in the Baker Hill Cemetery which is on private property in McDade Texas. His brother Thad was married to Texana BAKER and this small cemetery is a family plot with graves mostly belonging to Baker family members. The cemetery is not visible from any road and when I (Melba) visited Baker Hill I spent several hours finding some local who knew where to find this family cemetery & was told at the time of my visit (2001) that some of hte local women had taken it upon themselves to clean up the cemetery and it was fenced in with a sign on its gate. Notes:

Sometimes her date of birth is shown as in 1833, as is the death certificate below. It is more likely to be 1838 per her age on various census enumerations and as Rosa McLemore Dunkerly shows that Wright, born in 1835, was the eldest child of Keton McLemore and Rebecca Harrelson.

Lucretia was married first to George Stedham, who died in 1876, and shortly after his death, she married Joseph Albert OEMISCH

However, she was still listed as Lucretia STEDHAM on subsequent census enumerations. Lucretia's sister, Rosa McLemore Dunkerly, said that Lucretia's "2nd husband Joe Eomish---went away, never heard of, 1 child Paul"

Rosa also notes that Lucretia had six children, two of whom died in infancy.

Norma Smith provided El Paso City Directory lisitngs from 1914-1920, and Lucretia J Stedman, the widow of Geo B, is shown as a nurse and living at 507 Tornillo.

Rosa's papers say that Amanda's husband Philip was a veteran of the Civil War and a farmer in Seguin---and that he died in Seguin and Amanda in San Antonio. She lists their children as Margaret, Clara, Emma Edward, Walter, Mattie, Rex and Agnes.

In 1880 and 1900, she was listed with her husband and children, and they were living in Seguin. In 1910 and 1920, she was living with her daughter, Clara Flowers, in San Antonio, Texas.

Mrs. Amanda Ebner, 82, died at 5:15 Friday morning at the home of her daughters, Mrs. Emma NENTWIG, 3834 Montana street. She was a native of Louisiana and is survived by her four daughters, Mrs. Margaret SEMMLER of Kingsbury; Mrs. Clara FLOWERS and Mrs. Emma NENTWIG of San Antonio; and Mrs. Martha POGORZELSKI of Seguin; two sons, Ed P. EBNER of Pismo, Calif. and Walter EBNER of San Antonio, besides seventeen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Lou STEDEAM (sic) of El Paso, and one brother, Selig (sic) McLEMORE of Oklahoma. The body will be sent to Seguin Saturday morning under the direction of the San Antonio Undertaking and Embalming Company and the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon with services in St. James Catholic Church.

Melba Gene McLemore writes that her great-great grandfather, Felix Harrelson McLemore "is often described as the most colorful of the McLemore brothers. His self proclaimed profession was that of a Professional Monte Dealer, although census records listed him as a farmer. Letters Felix and Clarissa exchanged show Felix was most often gone to Idaho or Montana prospecting for gold. From their letters, and the children's birth dates, we gather Felix was home long enough for Clarissa Isabella to become pregnant with one of their ten children, and then he would be off again on another mining prospect."

This is a letter he wrote his wife from Thompon Falls, Montana, as transcribed by Melba Gene McLemore:

Dear Isabel, I write you a few lines in answer to yours of seven days ago and this being the first chance I have had to get a letter to the office I have had since I received your letter although I was here a week ago but did not have time to write as I was in a hurry to get on .We are still out from Thompson Falls fifteen miles prospecting land but have had bad luck that is we have not struck gold enough to pay in any quantities but are not done trying but don't know when we will give it up but not soon I have found another Lege of one I wrote to you about finding one sometime ago and was going to have an assay of it it only went $16.00 to the ton but I think it will get better as we go down on it and that is our business here today to get fuse and powder and tools to work the lege with the other one I found. I don't know now what it will go but I think it better than the other one. We went to bed rock in our placer mines but did not find gold enough to pay so gave it up but we are going down on our lege and will work a week or so and then I am going on a trip in the mountains with a man who has got horses and will furnish me to go with him and we will be gone for two months or more but you can still direct to Thompson. Hope you are all well can't say when I will be at home may not come this winter but will if I make money enough to get home on and back here in the Spring for I think I will make something here yet for the country is covered with minerals of all kinds. Tell Robert to be on his guard for he is in danger of being killed at any time I have only killed one deer since I have been here, but have not had time to hunt. I saw an awful large bear track in the sand between here and camp this morning but I have not seen one since I have been here. I got a letter from the boys and will answering them as soon as I get a little time hope they are getting out of the grass and they will have an easier time I don't intend for them to make another crop in that county if I can help it. I write you a few lines after waiting to hear from you. I have written two letters since I heard from any of you. What is the matter. Have you written or not or do you wait for me to write before you write. If so I think you owe me a dozen or more for I know that I have written a dozen more than I got from any of you. I am not doing anything of account. Hardly make my grub and sometimes don't make that. In fact couldn't do much if I had work to do for the snow is three feet or has been until a few days back. We had quite a thaw but it snowed all day yesterday and the night before. As the snow snow is over two feet deep now and will not be less until spring. I shall prospect next spring again after I do my assessment work on my claims which will take some twenty days as I own two Interests and as soon as I am done I will start for the mountains for two months and if I don't find something rich I will quit and go to work for wages and try to get back home by winter if I can. I hope you will get along without me until then which I know you can and better perhaps than if I was there but you don't know how bad I want to see you all but I can't get there now so I will try to content myself by thinking you will get along without me best. I hope the children are going to school. When you write give me all the news and don't write such short letters as this. Hope this will find all well.

The following letter, also transcribed by Melba Gene McLemore, is one that Felix wrote his son John Wright McLemore from the Idaho Territory in the 1880's:

Dear Son: I write you in answer to yours which came to hand a day or so ago. I haven't nothing new to write. I am working at a saw mill at two dollars a day and board and it is very hard work in heavy timber and snow but I don't think I will work long as the mill will not run only to the last of the month by the partie who is running now --- I will not stay here long for as soon as I can make a few dollars I will go to work on my claims. I wish you all was out here and I hope you will sell the place this year at some price for I can't live in that country anymore after seeing this country. What has become of Marion Oliver or do you know. I have written to him several times but got no answers. Is Tie Jones thear yet if not find out whear he is and write to me. I have written to him and Neal Campbell but have not got any answers -- I don't think Marion Oliver is in the county or he would have answered my letters -- I hope you will succeed in making a good crop, be sure and do the best you all can for I don't know when I will start home not before fall at any rate. I will try to save money enough to carry me home this summer if possible. Thear is quite a rush here now and plenty men out of work and can' get a day's work--I have just written to your mother-- I hope you boys will not let your mother do any hard work for she says she has not been well since I left home. Clarissa wrote her husband in December, 1883 asking him to come home, as there had been some killings in McDade. Melba's transcription of this letter follows:

McDade Bastrop December the 10th 1883

Dear Husband In answer to yours which came in hand a few days Since and found all well and doing the the best we no how - your fruit trees has come and i went and got them and planted them out - you sayed to mark the hogs ive have marked all that didnt die the rest of them are looking very fine there is thousands of _____ yet plenty to last even till Spring-- Moley Bobs Wife is here bin here since sunday She stayed at Mr. Wards seven or eight days and 10 or 12 at Thads and is here and She dont no where bob is at left here a few days ago to hunt a place and have not herd from him since-The partys that rented the Wheat ? place have backed out wanted Thad to furnish 10 or 15 dolars to repane the houses and deduct it from the rent dont no of eny one else wanting land and will have to let it stand until you come home- well there has bin some killing in McDade Bose Heffington was kild there a few nights ago in the dark no one was present the parties met on the street near the market and both parties shot but neither party culd be found and it was a mistry for a while.what _____bose recieved the first shot through the left lung and brok and runn out g. milltons paster and went to miltons house and told about it- he lived about forty eight hours and made an afendavit and swore to it and it was against Jeff fitzpatrick and jeff has not bin seen since Walter sayes he is very proud now and going to bring him a saddle The cowes are very poor on account of eating acorns still I have rote all that is of eny interest. will close by saying I wis you would come home as soon as you can

(Transcriber's Note: It appears this letter was folded and an extra note added to the end of the paper as the writing appears upside down when looking at the front page of the letter. Written above Isabellas heading of "McDade Bastrop December the 10th 1883" is the following: "Bill says he has quiet crying and will give you some Eggs to make you an EGG Nog when you come home."

A few weeks later, Felix's own brothers Thad and Wright, were taken out of a saloon in McDade and hung by vigilantes, George Milton, Tom Bishop, Mr. Howery and Preacher Frank Fleming. His brothers-in- law, Az and Jack Batey, were killed in a shoot out on Christmas Day, the day following the hangings. Robert Stephens and Haywood Batey were also involved in the shoot out, but not killed. A niece, Pearl Lee Batey was to be born this same day, to Walter and Elizabeth Batey.

Had Felix been home, he likely would have been killed as well. He was interviewed by the St. Louis Globe Democrat Reporter on December 29 about the tragedies in McDade. Melba Gene was unable to find a copy of this article in any of the December, 1883 St. Louis papers, however the article was reprinted in several Texas newspapers.

Melba found the following related article from the Williamson County Sun, published on January 31, 1884:
"Last Monday afternoon, Felix McLemore and Marion Beatty, kinsmen of the men who were hung and shot at McDade on Christmas, rode into Taylor armed with Winchester rifles, and stopped at Pilgrim's saloon. Milton and Bishop, whose firearms were used with fatal effect in the McDade affray, were already in town, well armed, and at Boyd's store on the opposite side of Main street. The two hostile parties were soon aware of their proximity to each other and were vigilant and guarded in their movements on the streets. For a time fears were entertained of a deadly conflict on our streets, but neither party sought a meeting with the other, and Milton and Bishop, having attended to the business which brought them to town, left for home. McLemore and Beatty remained in town till next day, when Marshal Olive got a telegram from the sheriff of Bastrop county, to arrest Beatty, on a charge of robbery, and bring him to Bastrop; in compliance with which he made the arrest and carried Beatty up to Austin that day, McLemore accompanying his friend."

Felix and Isabella had ten children, nine of whom lived into adulthood. Of the nine children, Gabe would die at 17 years and one day of age. The youngest son would live 9 days, as inscribed on Isabella's headstone, as she too would pass from the birth of this child.

In 1892, some four years after Clarissa died, Felix and his children sold their land and McDade. The following year he took out a life insurance policy with New York Life in St. Louis, Missouri. He named his children Clarissa Isabell (Lotta) and Marion Harrelson McLemore as beneficiaries, and listed his occupation as Cowboy and Saloon Keeper.

Felix remarried to "a woman named Sara, around the same time his daughter Minnie Bell married in 1904. Oral family history has this as a short lived marriage---and no records of it have been found." He had a saloon in Mineral Wells about this same time.

Felix bailed out of the saloon business in 1916, he had gone broke from selling on credit. His address in 1919 was St. Louis, Missouri, where he was staying with his daughter, Lotta, and her husband, Claude Johnstone. This is where he was living when he died.

Appears to have been named in honor of Thaddeus Kosciuszko, the Revolutionary War Patriot from Poland who fought for the American Cause during the Revolution.

Hung, along with his brother Wright, by vigilantes in McDade, Texas on Christmas Eve, 1883. The following story about the event was published in the Austin Statesman Newspaper:

HORRIBLE AFFRAY AT McDADE
Three Men Hung, Three Shot and Several Others Wounded McDade - Dec. 25-"Last night about 7:30 o'clock Henry Pfeiffer, Wright McLemore and Thad McLemore were taken out of the saloon here, by masked men, and carried about a mile into the brush and hanged to a tree. Thad McLemore had been arrested late in the evening on a charge of burglary made by S. E Walker of McDade. He was under arrest at the time the masked men took him, while the other two parties happened to be present. Pfeiffer was charged with horse theft in this County. The party who did the hanging was about 40 or 50 men well armed. Today a party of six men, friends and relatives of the men hung, came in town and raised trouble with Tom Bishop and George Milton, a fight with shot guns and pistols took place, in which Jack Batey and Az Batey were killed, Hayward Batey badly wounded, but who escaped. Willie Griffin a very estimable young man of our town, was shot though the head and mortally wounded by Hayward. Griffin was assisting Milton and Bishop in defending themselves.

The five dead bodies of the McLemores, Bateys and Pfeiffer are lying in the Market house, none of their friends having come for them, and it is thought the town will have serious trouble tonight when they do come. It will be several days before the jury of inquest will get through.

Rosa's papers have Bell's husband as John Sheppard, a prosperous farmer in Bastrop County, both died in Houston, both buried in Smithville. Parents of 3 children.

The following letter was written to Rebecca Isabella (McLemore) Shepard shortly after the Christmas Eve & Christmas Day 1883 murders of her brothers, Thad and Wright McLemore, along with Felix McLemore's brothers-in-laws Az & Jack Batey, it is thought that Addie (Nancy Adaline) McLemore wrote this letter; it is also possible it was written by Amanda (McLemore) Ebner.

Austin Feb. 15 1884

Dear Isabelle,

I am a long time in writing but there has been nothing to write, and I want to see you so bad that writing seems like a farce. I wanted to see you so all before I left but knew it would do me no good. I don't like to say good-bye and I felt in leaving then I was leaving the best friends I had on earth.

Thought my mind would be in a better condition to contend with and have come to the conclusion that the shadow will never be lifted from my life. Well Isabell we are all here together yet. Mollie was intending to go on to Maggie's but Felix was in town when we got here and he said it would never do for her to keep on them, as she would be watched. Henry Green and Ty Jones came up on same train as we did, and next day Jhon (sic) Allen came up. There is no telling what Allen wanted . He acted in a suspicious manner. We saw Felix a day or two ago. He was intending to go down home, but was advised not to. I know that something is on the list regarding him, and know his life would not be worth much if he was down there. He is staying out with Marion Oliver now. He spoke about visiting to have you come up here to see him, and I wish you would. It would be better than for him to go down there.
We have had a fearful time ever since we been up here. It has been raining and misting all the while. The town is dull and gloomy and nothing doing. We have had no work yet but everybody says after a while times will be better. I guess they will, if not I will back away from this region. I will go slap crazy if I don't get something to do pretty soon.
I wish I could see you and the children. Don't let them forget me. I know baby will but the others may not. God knows when we will meet again or how we will all come out. If I had known what I know now, I would of never have left there or would of never stopped here . I only stopped here to be nearer to you all , thought from the way things were represented I could get plenty of work here and may after a while, but I will have to live on in the mean time. I want you all to write to me soon. This letter is to Grandmother and all. Give my love to Blanche and tell her to write.

Melba Gene McLemore notes that Rosa's papers list ONLY David O'Donovan, and not James Williams, as Sarah's husband. She was said to have had 8 children in total. No marriage record has been found for David Donovan and Sarah Elizabeth. Melba further notes that census records on David Donovan and Sarah show them to be married the same number of years as Sarah would have been married to James Williams. Additionally, in 1891, Sarah writes a letter to her step-brother Felix mentioning "Jim," and giving the impression she is writing about her husband. Melba therefore speculates that it is possible (but not proven) that James Williams may have actually changed his name to David Donovan.

Pleasant McLemore had the following to say about his sister, in a letter he wrote in January, 1955:
"sister elizabeth was grown and married, when i was born, in later life she Became a preacher, she preached in the church of god for 35 years, she died At the age of 86 with hardening of the arteries. She prayed for the sick and They got well, she used no medicine." Another family member mentioned that Sarah wrote hymns and gospel music.

The following letter, written by Sarah Elizabeth to her half-brother Felix in 1891, was transcribed by Melba Gene McLemore. Melba indicated that the original was difficult to read, both due to ink blotches and a section of the top left had corner being torn.

Barstow, California Feb. 1891

To: F.H. McLemore Dear Brother,

I will answer ?.your letter which i rec'd sometime last month. I have Been so busy lately that i have not had much time to write you an by the Heading of this letter [you can tell] t hat we have moved from doggatt. we left there the First of january not being able to get a house in that place. we are living Ten miles from there. A good bit of work going on her , as this is the Terminal of one r.r. and an other goes thru here. Jim got a job here the First of month. He attends to what they call the coal shoot. That is he Loads all the enjines with coal during the day & on other mass loads at Night..he gets 70$ seventy dollars a month.sometimes he has not ? Much to Do. I don't think it agrees with him to work rather hard and other times Has not much to do . I don't think it agrees with him to work .

there is a school here & the children are going to school but i think there are only three other pupils besides mine. David is sick so much he Does not go regular.we have had some very cold weather since christmas. It Is usually very mild weather in winter here but generally very warm in Summer. I don't suppose i will ever see the " lone star state" again. It Seems to me that i should be glad to see green fields again. There is Nothing growing here except a few trees along the river front?? Of course There is farming done as some other parts of the state bit i think it is All done by erigetion and the whole state is mountainous and i think nar Person has been here a few. A mine some of them are .no buy s meal and i Don't believe ???..their mines are worth five dollars. i received a letter from emma when i got yours. she told me addie was there And in very bad health but i suppose you hear from them often. In regard to My post try as i should not be in the least offended at any thing you might Do for me but i don't think hymn writers ever make much money with their Pens & that is my forte. I have intended to write to some publishers but was Not expect to receive answer. Still if i could make something i could devote More time to writing here , by write better. Still my time ?..talent ? Life are consecrated to god. & if he designs that & that i should receive any thing i will & if not it will be best & i Shall be content. Well this is bad ink & paper & my paper is probably Written & oversaid erably blotched so excuse it . I shall not write a long Letter this time. Rosa McLemore Dunkerly recalls that Bob was a "cowboy in his younger days, rode the Chisolm trail--knew all old timers, Ben Thompson, King Fisher and others. Was very good with a gun, wore two. Returned to McDade and killed Tom Bishop and all the members of the gang that were to be found."

Melba Gene McLemore notes, however, that Tom Bishop actually outlived Bob McLemore. She states that there were news articles about several attempts made on Bishop's life over the years. None of the news accounts, however, gave any indication that Bob might have been involved in these attempts. In Bob's family, a sketchy story was also passed down through the years, indicating that "Robert and two other family members from East Texas rode to Round Rock, Tx to get revenge for the hangings."

Both the 1900 census and daughter Margie Bell's delayed birth certificate list his occupation as a Physician. His grandson, Sam McLemore, Jr. clarifies that Bob was actually a "medicine man, healer, Indian Doctor." The 1910 Arkansas census, in fact, lists the family as "Indian." The prior Texas census showed them as white.

Pleasant McLemore wrote that "Bro. Bob and I were opposit characters. I was more like Felix, Bob didn't place much imphisis on justice, but Felix and I did. I roasted Bob many times while visiting him in regard to this. He brought Mollie [his wife] to be with mother before her twins were born, when she went back, I went with her to assist her, I was 16 years of age, I stayed there 5 or 6 months." (From a March 1, 1955 letter to his niece).

Bob McLemore's life was cut short by violence. When his youngest son, Sam McLemore, had not yet reached his tenth birthday he was in the fields with his father and a hired hand. Rosa reports that "the friend corrected Bob's boy Sam in a very rough manner." Bob and the hired hand shot at each other. Bob was shot in the jaw, but didn't visit a doctor. He developed gangrene from the wound and soon died. Bob was around 54 at the time, and left behind his wife and six children. Pleasant McLemore later wrote to a niece that is was a few miles from Vivian, Louisiana where his brother Bob was buried, in a "saw mill town named Mytis, Louisiana." He presumably is refering to Myrtis, a small town in Caddo Parish, near Vivian.

Rosa McLemore Dunkerley writes that Emma died in Boerne, Texas. It would therefore appear she left California sometime after this census to return to Texas. She can not be located on a 1920 census index, so she may have died prior to this.

Emily married Rudolph Bluhm on 8 Jan 1878 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas. Rudolph was born about 1851 in Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

She and her brother Rufus were both very ill as young children. Rufus died young, but Addie grew into adulthood and married. She was never able to have children of her own, however.

Notes:

Rosa was interviewed by a grandson in 1941, and her detailed description of the family makeup was the starting point for much of the subsequent genealogical research done regarding the Keeton Jones McLemore family. She loved to fish, a trait she passed on to her granddaughter, Barbara Nixon.

In 1944, a few years after her husband's death, Rosa was living at 8005 Grafton Street in Houston.

In a November, 1954 letter to his niece, Pleasant informs her that his sister Rosa had recently been diagnosed with "cancer on (her) lower intestine", a fact that her sons knew but did not want their mother informed of.

Pleasant was interested in family history, and several letters he wrote to family members in the mid 1940's and 1950's have been preserved. He details much of his own history in these letters. He told his niece Ivy that he was a "life long democrat." He also informed her that he "managed to drag through St. Marys College two terms, I payed my own tuition by driving a carriage..." In a 1944 letter to J. W. McLemore in Altus, Oklahoma, Pleasant wrote that "At one time, I was the leading building contractor in S.A. (San Antonio), owned my own woodworking mill. Raised race colts as a hobby, owned the fastest trotting horses in the city (a stallion) in 1909-10-11....(worked) for S.P.R.R. as a building forman...for over 7 years. I resigned to go in business for myself...." In a later letter to his niece, Ivy, he wrote that "over 500 houses in S. A. I made plans for and built them accordingly. The archtictects had much confidence in my bldg. judgement."

Pleasant also told J.W. McLemore that in 1911 he took a contract from "the Standard Oil Co. to build a gas pumping plant at Rodesa, La. I moved in Vivian. La. after completion." In Vivian, he did both commerial and residential construction. After leaving Louisiana, he settled in Houston.

He also informed both correspondents of business reverses that caused him to go bankrupt. He told his niece Ivy that "overwork was the cause of my affliction, my dr. had warned me unless I slowed down it would finally get me.

He is thought to be buried at either the Hollywood or Brookside Cemetery in Houston.

George K. Stedham, 90, died Wednesday in his home, 2020 Magoffin Avenue. Mr. Stedham had been a life-long resident of El Paso and was a retired merchant. Survivors are his sister, Mrs. Violet MAUK, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dan STEDHAM, both of El Paso. Funeral arrangements were pending with the Kaster and Maxon Funeral Home.

Daniel Rufus Stedham, 73, Lower Valley, a former dairyman, died Tuesday in a local hospital. Mr. Stedham, who was born in Luling, Texas, came here in 1979. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Knights of Pythias. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ola M. Stedham; two sons, Horace and Earl Stedham; two daughters, Mrs. W.E. HALL and Miss Ozelle Stedham; one brother George Stedham; a sister, Mrs. Viola MAUK, and five grandchildren, all of El Paso. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Kaster and Maxon Chapel, with the Rev. A. F. Tucker of Yselta officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery with the Knights of Pythias in charge of graveside services.

HANSON on 28 Nov 1887 in Ulvalde, and finally (3) Elmer Harley MAUK on 17 Jan 1916. As her name on the marriage certificate to Elmer Mauk was Viola Rucker, it appears she may have had another marriage between the one to F. S. Hanson and Elmer Mauk.

Elvira's mother had to sign a consent for Elvira to marry Wilbert Kenyon. Lucretia stated that Wilbert Kenyon was 26 and Elvira was age 16...although it appears she was actually only 13....and that there was no legal objection to the Marriage of said Kenyon and Miss Elvira Stedham.

The WWI Draft registration records at Ancestry.com were searched, but no information was found for either a Leon or a Rexford Ebner, which also indicates he/they died young. Rosa McLemore Dunkerly shows that Philllip and Amanda were the parents of a Rex, but does not list a Leo. It is therefore assumed that Rex was called by both names.

Pleasant McLemore wrote to his grandniece Irene that Minnie's father, Felix, "sent her to me to break up a romance with a young man who he didn't approve of, I don't know if his plan proved a succes of not...." in a later letter he added that "my wife and I became fond of her when she was visiting us in San Antonio."

Her daughter Maurine reported that Minnie Bell was never referred to as Mrs. Gaines, but always "Minnie Bell." She was five feet tall, weighed only 89 pounds, and had a 25 inch waist, being "prissey as she could be."

She was a life long Methodist and very religious, not approving of her father owning a saloon, refering to it only as "father's business."

She died after a fall when she was 92, hurting her ribs and never recovering fully.

He married Dilla SHAW. They were the parents of 14 children. They raised four sons, Wisey Ernest, Buford Earl, Cicero Hazel, and Wayland. Another son, Audry Eugene died at the age of one year. Nine daughters survived and married: Odessa Fanita ATKINSON, Ruth Susie ALLISON, Winnie Mae STARNES, Adeline Magie PUGH, Maggie Lee ALLEN, Opal Joe BELCHER GRIMLAND, Rachel LANGE, Ruby Nell WALKER, and Bobbie Joe HERN.

In 1996, the family celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first K.J. WRIGHT family reunion, from July 5 through July 7 in Breckenridge at the Pugh Ranch. At that time, there were 326 direct descendants of Keaton and Dilla. The first family reunion was held at the Wright home in Rochester, Haskell County, when their son, Cicero was coming home from the service in 1946.

Melba Gene McLemore writes that she was in touch with some of Mary's descendants, living in Alaska. They always knew her last name a Donovan, as apparently she used that name from the time she was a young girl. It appears she was adopted, either formally or informally, by her mother's second husband.

Robert Donovan is very likely, but not definatively proven. to be the father of Gordon Donovan, born ca. 1912 in California. In 1930, Gordon and Robert were sharing a home in Los Angeles with Robert's mother, the widowed Sarah Elizabeth. Robert was also marked as widowed. Ten years earlier, in 1920, the 8 year old Gordon was living with his grandmother and with his Uncle and Aunt, Wesley & Florence Donovan. Gordon was not in California at the time, being a lodger in the home of Oliver and Grace Griffin in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona. He was listed as a white male, age 34 and widowed, and working as a "Clerk of Board, Supervisor."

Finally, the listing below is POSSIBLY for Robert and his wife at the time of the 1910 census. The name and age of the head of household is correct, however the birthplace of his mother is shown as California vs. Texas. Additionally Gordon Donovan's subsequent census responses seem to indicate his mother was not born in California, but in either Texas or Canada. The wife on the listing below is shown as being born in California, as are both of her parents.

In a September, 1954 letter to his grandniece Ivy McLemore, Pleasant wrote that his daughter, "Nay...lives about 3 miles from Dickerson near the wells my son-in-law has charge of...he is a sheet metal worker."

Barbara Cunningham, in her "Farris and Cunningham Family Ancestors" tree, posted at WorldConnect at Rootsweb, shows that Delana married Earnest PINNELL and second Sam BARTON. She also has a date of death as ca. 1930.

Melba McLemore shows the same two marriages, on 23 Sept 1917 to Earnest Clyde Pinnell, and on 26 May 1927 in Texas to Sammy Gilespy Barton. Melba has a much later date of death listed, however, that of March 1986.

I was not able to locate either Delana or Earnest Pinnell at the time of the 1920 census.

In 1930 Delana is shown with her second husband, S. Glispie BURTON, in Altus, Jackson County, Oklahoma (ED 33-2, SD 8, Sheet 1B, 720-17-17). He was listed as age 43, born in Texas to a father born in Missouri, and working as a carpenter. Delana is shown with the first initial E, age 39, and born in Texas. Children in the household are H. Lowell (son) age 17, Lenys (dtr) age 14, Davis (dtr?) age 12, and Margarett (dtr) age 2. The three oldest children were all born in Texas, perhaps by a prior marriage of Gillispie Burton's? Only daughter Margarett (age 2) was born in Oklahoma. Based on the date of marriage, only Margarett could have been a child of Delana's.

At the time of the 1930 census, 20 year old Clara was listed as divorced, and she and her daughter Charleen were living with her parents in Austin.

After divorcing Clara Gaines, it is possible that Jewel Hedrick remarried, and was living in Kiowa, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, listed as being age 22. His wife, also age 22, was named Effie, and they had a 2 month old son, Junior. Also living with Jewel and his second wife were his parents, Frank and Mary Hedrick of Tennessee. At the time of the 1920 census, Frank and Mollie Hedrick can be found in Damon Twp, Latimer County, Oklahoma, along with three children, Larante, Olie and Jewel. That census listing, however, shows Jewel as born ca 1908 instead of 1898. This may have been simply an error in the transcription, but should be resolved. It is possible there were two Jewel Hedrick's.

Her second marriage was to Chapell CRUMLEY, and they had no issue.

Born in Crowell, Texas on January 5, 1918, she was the youngest and last surviving of the five daughters of Albert and Minnie Bell Gaines. Her family moved to Austin when she was a young girl and she resided in the Austin area until her death. Her first husband, Lee Robertson, passed away in 1969. In 1984 she married Johnnie Brydson who died in 1995. She never bore children but her niece, Charlene Ingram; step daughter, Amy Bonds and nephew's wife, Judy Bloomquist were her "daughters". Her nephew, Marvin Bloomquist, was her "son". Their families were her "grandchildren".

Maurine and Johnnie married late in life after both losing spouses to cancer. They made up for lost time with a very full life. They especially enjoyed traveling, taking numerous trips to Europe, Hawaii, and all over the US. While Johnnie's unexpected death was a crushing blow, Maurine did not let it get her down. She continued an active social life and made trips to Italy, Ireland and New York City when she was well into her 80's. In August of 2004 she walked the Golden Gate Bridge in both directions. She lived alone at her home in Oak Hill, taking care of a beautiful yard, her cats, and a vegetable garden. She was active in her church, Abiding Love Lutheran, other social organizations, played bridge and dominoes, drove her own car, and throughly enjoyed life right to the end. She never met a stranger - she made everyone feel special and after talking to her a few minutes it was like she had been your life long friend. She was an inspiration to all of us as a way to stay young at heart when the body grows old. She had a zest for life but did not fear death. She saw it as the time she would be reunited with her beloved Johnnie and all of her friends who had gone before her. Her passing leaves a big gap in the lives of many but we were all blessed by her time on this earth.

Her friends are invited to join her family in a celebration of her life at Weed-Corley-Fish funeral home, 3125 North Lamar, at 11 AM Thursday June 1. Internment will be at Forest Oaks Memorial Park. A reception will follow at Abiding Love Lutheran Church, 7210 Brush Country Road. There will be a visitation Wednesday, May 31 at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8 PM. The family suggests donations to the Seton Heart Transplant Fund or a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
