At the time of the above referenced census, 22 year old Adkins McLemore, born in Tennessee, was a border in the home of Alfred and Purlney Manning, both age 45, and both born in North Carolina.
Could this be the Sugar Atkins found in Gibson County, TN on later census enumerations? Probably not, as the Sugar Atkin McLmeore, husband of Mary, that was on the 1900 Gibson County, TN census was born July 1863. Perhaps this was instead a namesake a son of Sugars and Mary Jane (Taylor) McLemore?
Sugars married Mary Jane Taylor on 28 Jul 1862 in Carroll County, Tennessee. Mary was born before 1842; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

18. | Priscilla McLemore (5.Giles2, 1.Frances1) was born about 1832 in Williamson County, Tennessee; and died. Notes:
Appears to have been living with her brother Young at the time of the 1870 census, in Carroll County, Tennessee, along with her sister, Elizabeth. No husband is listed with her, but three children were. Might they have been hers? The children were Nancy, 14, Elizabeth 12, and Clinton, age 9. No last name is listed, and it is presumed they were McLemore's.
|
19. | Elizabeth McLemore (5.Giles2, 1.Frances1) was born about 1836 in Williamson County, Tennessee; died after 1860 in Gibson County, Tennessee. Notes:

Might they have been hers? The children were Nancy, 14, Elizabeth 12, and Clinton, age 9. No last name is listed, and it is presumed they were McLemore's.

28. | William Robert McLemore (7.Abraham2, 1.Frances1) was born about 1852 in Carroll County, Tennessee; died about 1910. Notes:
From the 'Humboldt Courrier': "Milan, TN., Jan. 30--Robert McLemore, aged about 68 years, died yesterday of pneumonia at the home of S. H. Hughes near here. He was a Confederate soldier. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Manning of Lavinia & Mrs. Fry of Cedar Grove,TN." (Courtesy of Mark Freeman's Website McLEMORE FAMILY OF SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/mclemore.html)
Mark Freeman has him born ca 1842, however, this contradicts both the 1850 and 1860 census. It appears he was born in 1852. He must have been very young when entered the Civil War, perhaps in the last days of that war.
|
29. | James Sugars McLemore (7.Abraham2, 1.Frances1) was born about 1855 in Carroll County, Tennessee; died about 1901 in Carroll County, Tennessee. Notes:
Mark Freeman has his date of birth as ca 1845, but this contradicts both the 1850 and 1860 census.
Could this be him at the time of the 1880 census? Note that this census information would support 1855 as his date of birth. This also might be the listing for his older brother, John, who was also said to be married to a woman named Nannie.

30. | Margaret Jane McLemore (7.Abraham2, 1.Frances1) was born about 1858 in Carroll County, Tennessee; and died. Notes:
Mark Freeman has her date of birth as 1848, but this contradicts both the 1850 and 1860 census. George Rogers, a descendant, emailed in September 2013 that Margaret Jane "had children from her only known marriage. One son George Edward Rogers and daughter Francis or Fannie. She was married then separated from her only known husband a George W.(Washington) Rogers. When they separated Geroge took his son George Edward Rogers (my grandfather) and Margaret took her daughter Fannie. No idea where Margaret went. George W. Rogers lived in Lavania, Carroll County and remarried a Susan Elizabeth (maiden name Pritchard)Butler whom was married with previous children from her late husband Mr. Butler."

Mark Freeman has his date of birth as 1865, however family members instead show him as being born late in 1860. Jeff Loveless also show he and Ida as being the parents of his ancestor, Durant McLemore, born in Bells, Crockett County, Tennessee. It appears that Durant was more likely the son of Edward's second cousin, Dr. A. M. McLemore.

His great grandson, Charles McLemore, reports that John married again after the death of Elizabeth Young. It is possible that this second wife was Annie Howell. He would have married her sometime after the 1890 census (when his youngest daughter by Elizabeth was born), and she likely either died or divorced him prior to 1900.

34. | James Alfred McLemore (9.Charles3, 3.Atkins2, 1.Frances1) was born on 6 Dec 1852 in Tennessee; died on 19 Apr 1938 in Medina, Gibson County, Tennessee; was buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Medina, Gibson County, Tennessee. Notes:
In 1880 he was single and working on the WATTS farm in Heaths, Gibson County, TN. On the census he was shown as age 57, when he was actually 27, and furthermore mistranscribed as Mcseviore versus McLemore.
He appears to have married first and second:
McLemore, J. A. m. Hogan, Louisa in 1877 Gibson County, TN
McLemore, J. A. m. Howell, Mary Jane in 1884 in Gibson County, TN (nee Langford, as she was said to have been previously married to Charles Howell)
Third marriage to Louella McCaslin.
The Rev. William P. McLemore shows that James died on 19 Apr 1938, and is buried in Medina, Gibson County, Tennessee. This matches the scan of his death certificate on his FindAGrave memorial page. His occupation was shown as "farmer" and his father as Charles McLemore, with mother not known. Informant was H. N. McLemor of Jackson, Tennessee.

49. | Jones Albert McLemore (16.Young3, 5.Giles2, 1.Frances1) was born about 1858 in Carroll County, Tennessee; and died. Notes:
Shown by some to have married Ann McBRIDE.
Tennessee State Marriage records indexed on Ancestry.com show a J A Mclemore as married, on 15 Jun 1898 in Gibson County, to Louella Mccaslin. Solemnized by R W Kinson M.G. This family can be found on the 1900 census in Gibson County, TN. J A was born Dec 1857 in Tennessee, as were both parents. She was also a native of Tennessee. They were shown as married two years, mathcing the record above. Four children, born to J A in a prior marriage were present, Newman (15), Hessie P (10), Nettie (8), and Allie (5). J A and Louella appear to have also had a son together, 1 year old Ben. In 1910, the family was still in Gibson County, He was listed as Jim, and she as Jessie L. Children in the home at that time were Nettie (17), Allie (15), Shannon (9), Hollace (7), and Gladice (3). Also living in the household were 81 year old Mary McCASLIN and 46 year old Sherman McCASLIN. The death record of James Alfred McLemore of Gibson County, however, shows that he was a son of Charles McLemore, not Young. James Alfred died on 19 Arp 1938 in Medina, Gibson County, TN.
