(Research):A biography of Hezekiah Strong indicated that their were five (5) children in the "parental family," whereas Benjamin Dwight lists only four sons. It appears the fifth child was daughter Cordelia, listed as a descendant by Robert Strong, the historian of the Strong Family Association of America.

Reuben was the first deacon of The First Baptist Church of West Allis, which was organized by Elder Richard Griffing in 1836, the first organized religion to establish itself in the area. The church struggled its first few years, trying to hold firm in its existence, but, finally, in May 1841 the 37 charter members voted to disband and reorganize in North Greenfield (now West Allis). On June 2, 1841, delegates met at the home of Eber Cornwall and established the Baptist Church of Greenfield. In its early years the church formed a circuit of three nearby churches under one pastor. Services were held in Cornwall's home, then in a schoolhouse and later in a building on land owned by Reuben Strong, the first deacon of the church. A church building was finally erected in 1869 at South 83rd Street and West National Avenue under the leadership of Rev. Enoch Underwood. When the Madison Division of the Northwestern Railroad was built through West Allis in 1883, the building was relocated to south 84th Street and West Mitchell Street.(http://www.firstbaptistwestallis.org/history.html)

It APPEARS that Sophia died sometime after 1850, most likely sometime after 1855 when George was born. It also noteworthy that there is now a seven year old Sylvester STRONG listed. The relationship between George and Mary STRONG, age 33, is not known. She might be a second wife, or might be a relative that came to help him with his children. It is unusual that she is listed last in the household, and not immediately following his listing.

It appears that Benjamin was remarried to Eliza, most likely prior to the birth of Charles Strong. However, if Charles is actually 11, then both Eliza and Charles should have been listed in Benjamin's household at the time of the 1860 census. Perhaps Charles is a stepson. It is also interesting that 17 year old Sylvester Strong was missing from the 1860 census. He was either inadvertantly left off that census, or he might actually also be a son of Eliza from a prior marriage, and a stepson to Benjamin.

There was not a David Strong listed as paying personal property taxes in Trumbull from 1822-1834. A William STRONG was on this list, beginning in 1829, but his relationship to David is not known.

William, born ca 1790 in Massachussetts, is listed on the 1850 Trumbull County census. He is married to a Polly, born ca 1905 in Ohio, and they are the parents of Eliza (20), Electa (18), James (16), Tyrza Ann (8), Allen (7), and Milo (4), all born in Ohio.

David B. Strong registered a Cattle Marking June 25, 1841: Crop of right ear and hole in same.

On an 1841 plat of Bristol, David Strong's land was adjacent to land owned by the KAGY, ECKSTINE, and MAYHEW families. He appears to have owned the same plat of land from 1841 through 1890. On the 1900 plat of Bristol, it appears that this land had been transferred to Austin E. ULRICH.

Jan 1, 1846, indenture of apprenticeship between John REEL, David B. STRONG and Leah CLAY, age 9. John REEL, guardian of Leah CLAY, does bind Leah CLAY unto David B. STRONG until she reaches the age of 18, to learn the trade of housekeeping. Upon expiration of apprenticeship, David will provide Leah CLAY with a new bible, at least two suits of common wearing apparel, one cow, one bed, and one spinning wheel. David's first wife, Betsy, died on June 15, 1851

David Strong married Leanora A. Sherman one month after Betsy died, on July 15, 1851 in Ashtabula County. The fact that he had four small motherless children at home was likely the reason for the brief courtship.

By the time of the 1870 census, David's three oldest boys had moved away from home. Daughter Ella had died. Ralph, who would have only been around 12 years old, was working on the farm of his Uncle Hezekiah B. Strong in Nebraska, and since 11 year old Charles had not been listed on the 1860 census, he most likely was only age 9 or 10.

David and Leanora were divorced after the 1870 census, but remarried prior to the census of 1880.

David and Leanora died within weeks of each other in early 1894, as can be seen from the brief obituary below from the "Historical Collections of Bristol Township, Bristolville, Ohio" by Thomas J. Kachur, 1989, p. 209, xerox copies provided by the Trumbull County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society:

David Strong, an old pioneer of Bristol, died at his home, Friday, March 30. Funeral services were held Sunday. The relatives of the deceased desire, through the columns of the DEMOCRAT to extend their earnest thanks to the friends and neighbors who so kindly leant their assistance during Mr. Strong's sickness and death. The choir has their special gratitude for their part rendered in the funeral service. (Courtesy of William Billig).

The Strong Estates were probated in Trumbull County, Ohio (Estates no. 1060 and 1065).

David's personal goods and chattel were appraised on April 17, 1894, and determined to be worth $96.20. His estate consisted of 1 Bay Mare, 1 Bay Colt, 1 Buggy, 1 Cow, 18 Chickens, Wood, 1 old sleigh and wagon, 1 set of old bobbs, contents of blacksmith shop, a tool chest with tools, household furniture and potatoes. When these items were sold, $127.06 was raised. $59 was used to pay A.E. Miner for David's Casket and Burial Robe, with the balance being used to pay debts incurred in settling the estate.

Rhodene Frederick also found a reference to the probate proceedings in 1892 in nearby Geauga County for a David B. Strong. Copies of these records indicate this was another David B. Strong, a resident of Huntsburgh Township, and husband of Dorcas Strong. Their children were listed as Mrs. Mary E. Johnson and Ms.? S. Johnson.

The census listing for Hezekiah and Caroline from 1850 through 1880 follow. It is noteworthy that 1850, 1860 and 1870, Hezekiah had either a niece or nephew living with him. Hezekiah's biography, which also follows, indicates he was a prosperous man. Perhaps he was helping family members who were struggling to provide for their families. Or perhaps it was his pioneering spirit that attracted his relatives to his home.

HEZEKIAH B. STRONG one of the prominent early settlers of Nebraska, and who probably arrived here before anyone in this locality now living, has for the last twenty-two years been a resident of Todd Creek Precinct, and is the owner of a valuable farm embracing 185 acres of highly cultivated land with commodious and substantial buildings. He at one time owned a much larger acreage, but has sold off considerable.
Our subject arrived on the soil of Nebraska the 7th day of August, 1856, nearly eleven years before it was admitted into the Union as a State. He had made the journey overland from Wisconsin with teams and crossed the Missouri River on a flatboat. He settled first in Richardson County, near the present site of Falls City, but a year later changed his location to the present site of Nemaha City. There he purchased land, paying $1,000 for 160 acres, in Buchanan's Addition, taking all he could secure. That land he improved, making two miles of fence the first year. He held the property five years, in the meantime erecting buildings, setting out twenty acres of forest trees and two or three acres of fruit. In company with his wife and daughters, he put up one of the finest barns then in the county. This farm is now owned by Thomas Kean, and lies three miles southwest of Nemaha.
The neighbors of Mr. Strong at the time of his coming here were few and far between, and Indians roamed over the country, but aside from stealing whatever they could lay their hands upon, they did not molest the settlers, who were thankful to get off thus easily. Mr. Strong finally took up his residence on the Nemaha River, purchasing a tract of land in 1865, where he. began the building up of a homestead which he has disposed of. He was the founder of the town of Butler's Mills, and operated the first flouring-mill in that locality, grinding corn for people at Beatrice, and turned out the first bag of flour in the county.
It will be seen that Mr. Strong was one of the leading men of this section of country, and it is quite natural that he should be one of the first appointed Postmaster, which office he held for two years at Butler, and was succeeded by a Mr. O. M. Holmes. He was also the first Station Agent for the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, and as such was in the employ of that company a period of five years. In the meantime he steadily proceeded with the improvement of his land, and in the fall of 1881 finished one of the finest residences in this part of the county. This is a large, two story, frame structure, conveniently arranged, finely finished and handsomely furnished. The main barn corresponds entirely with the residence, and the sheds and cattle pens afford ample shelter for stock. Mr. Strong is largely interested in the breeding of road horses, and has one of the finest Hambletonian stallions in the State. He also has a three-year-old mare of the same breed, which is very valuable. His cattle are the Short-horns and his swine the Poland-China. The farm is enclosed with hedge fencing, and the fields which are not at present under cultivation are rich in good pasturage. About sixty acres of valuable timber add to the importance of the property, while the waste is utilized for fuel.
The subject of this sketch was born in Onondaga County, N. Y., Jan. 30, 1822, and lived there with his father until a lid of thirteen years. About 1835, leaving the Empire State, he emigrated to Wisconsin, making the journey via the first lake steamer set afloat. A few years afterward our subject sold the first peaches and apples ever marketed on the streets in the State of Wisconsin. He lived there about four years, then went East, and was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Stocking, a native of his own county, and soon afterward returned with his bride to Milwaukee. Later they settled on the Whitewater River in Jefferson County, where Mr. Strong became owner of a valuable tract of land.
To Mr. and Mrs. Strong there were born three children--Emma, Edward B. and Ella, all of whom are deceased. Ella married Peter Wright, and became the mother of three children, one of whom, a son, Carlton, is still living, and makes his home with his grandfather, attending school. Mrs. Caroline (Stocking) Strong was born Feb. 19, 1820, and was reared to womanhood in her native county, living there with her parents until her marriage. Site received a common-school education and that careful home training which fitted her for her subsequent duties in life.
Mr. Strong cast his first Presidential vote for J. K. Polk, being then a member of the Democratic party, but soon after the organization of the Republicans, considered he had reason to change his views and for the last thirty-two years has been one of the warmest supporters of Republican principles. After the outbreak of the late Civil War, he enlisted in Company H, 8th Kansas Infantry, being mustered in in November, 1862, and serving as a non-commissioned officer. He was at the battles of Perryville, Crab Orchard, Murfreesboro, and various other engagements and skirmishes, and at the end of his term of enlistment received his honorable discharge in March, 1863.
Ansel Strong, the father of our subject, was born in Connecticut, in about 1785, and upon reaching manhood was married to Miss Hannah Stocking. They removed to Onondaga County, N. Y., where they spent the remainder of their days, the death of the father taking place about 1865 (sic), after he had reached the advanced age of eighty-seven years. The mother died about 1826. The parental family consisted of five children.

If he did move to Nebraska, it appears he was back in Wisconsin by the time of the 1870 census. At that time, a 31 year old Ansel Strong, married to a 28 year old Rosina, was living in Hebron, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. They were the parents of Carrie, age 4, and Reuben, age 1. All four members of the family were listed as being born in Wisconsin. The same family can be found again in 1880, as follows:

George A. STRONG. Among the farming community of South Branch Precinct the subject of this sketch occupies a good position socially and financially. He has one of the most attractive homesteads in this region, finely located on section 28, and embracing 160 acres of land. He has acquitted himself as an enterprising farmer and good business man, one largely devoted to the interests of his home and his family, living quietly and unostentatiously, and preferring the comforts of his own fireside to mingling with the busy world. Although by no means advanced in years, he served in the Union Army during the late war, and preserves a vivid recollection of many of the experiences of that terrible time, in which he endured in common with his brother soldiers the hardships and privations of army life. He belonged to the home guards.
The parents of our subject, David B. and Betsey (Kagie) Strong, were natives respectively of New York and Pennsylvania, whence they removed in their youth with their parents to Trumbull County, Ohio, where they were married. The mother died many years ago. Both David B. Strong and his father, the paternal grandfather of our subject, are still living. The parental household included three sons and one daughter; the latter, Mary H., died when about thirteen years old. The other sons, John A. and Henry A. are living in Ohio and Wisconsin.
George A. Strong was born in Trumbull County, Ohio, May 12, 1846 (sic), and soon after the death of his mother, which occurred when he was seven years old, began life for himself. He worked on a farm until the spring of 1862, and then, although but a youth of sixteen years, enlisted in a regiment called the Trumbull Guards, being mustered in at Gallipolls, and at the close of the war was mustered out at the same place. He had participated in several skirmishes.
After the close of the war young Strong began an apprenticeship at the blacksmith trade, at which he worked three years in the Buckeye State. In the spring of 1868 he resolved to seek the farther West, and came to this county homesteading the quarter-section of land from which he total transformed a valuable and productive farm. He has put up most of the buildings which he now occupies, and for the last nine or ten years has operated a blacksmith-shop on his farm, which has not only been the source of a great convenience to himself, but his neighbors also. His fields are divided by beautiful hedge fences, and he has planted fruit and shade trees, having an apple orchard of 200 trees, besides the smaller fruits.
Mr. Strong after coming to the West was married in the town of Syracuse, this county, Sept. 12, 1877, to Miss Sopha, daughter of T. J. and E. J. (James) Edwards, who were natives respectively of Kentucky and Ohio. They removed with their parents to Missouri and were married in that State, where the father for a time followed his trade of mason. In 1873 they came to this county, lived for a time in Nebraska City, and then on a farm in Fremont County, Iowa. Finally returning to Syracuse, they lived there a short time, then changed their residence to Johnson County, where they still make their home. Of their children, twelve in number, seven are living, namely: Amelia, Susan, John, Sopha, Thomas, Josephine and Frank. The brothers and sisters of Mrs. Strong are residents mostly of Nebraska.
The wife of our subject was born in De Kalb County, Mo., July 28, 1856, received a good education, and taught school four terms before her marriage. She is a very intelligent lady and a favorite in the social circles of her neighborhood. Of her union with our subject there have been born five children, viz: M. Luella, Fred C., Susie B., J. Alta and E. Ruth. They are all at home with their parents. Mr. Strong is a Republican, "dyed in the wool," and an uncompromising Harrison and Morton man. He has been a member of the School Board of his district for the past three years, and Road Supervisor six years.

Strong, Henry A. b in Bristol Mar 12, 1846, son of David and Betsey Kagy Strong. David Strong was a native of New York. Betsey Kagy came to Bristol from Pennsylvania. Henry was a blacksmith and operated a shop in Warren. He di June 4, 1903. His wife, Emma A. Tovey, was b in England, and came to America withy her parents at the age of three. They were m in 1879 and were the parents of Harry, Clarence, and Warren A. Strong, all of Cleveland. David and Betsey Kagy Strong were m Mar 16, 1841.

Upton notes that "the mother of Mr. Strong was of a prominent family in Trumbull county named KAGY, who came from Pennsylvania. The family are in possession of a genealogy tracing back to Switzerland, from which European country they originated. Mr. Strong was reared and educated in Trumbull county and was by trade a blacksmith. He carried on a shop twenty years and up to his death, when he was one of the oldest business men in point of years in Warren. He was highly succesful in his undertakings. He made his own way through life from early boyhood and he owned considerable real estate and was associated with Messrs. LAUB (sic) and WALLACE of Warren. In his politics, he was a staunch defender of Republican party principles. He was known as a hard working man and educated his family in a commendable manner. After having spent a useful life he died June (sic) 4, 1903.

Henry Strong drew up his will on October 11, 1902. It is recorded in Will Bk #22 p. 1-4. He left the use of his homestead at 201 Park Avenue in Warren to his beloved wife Emma for her life. He also left her all the rents and profits from the "brick block known as the Meat Market property, on the east side of Park Avenue" which he owned an undivided on-half interest with Willam G. LAMB; the blacksmith shop site on Park Avenue; his undivided one-third interest he owned with William G. LAMB and Mrs. S.S. ERNEST in the Christy property on East Market Street; three lots in the McMyler addition in West Warren; $3,000 in life insurance; along with all his personal property and household goods. He further directed that all the property left after the decease of Emma should be equally divided among his three sons. In addition to the land he left Emma, he had various parcels, most owned in undivided interests with other individuals, that he left directly to his sons. He added that the sons should not come into absolute possesion and control in the various real estate possessions until they reached the age of 30, for the reason that he regarded said property as a good and valuable investment that would increase in value. He also willed to his son, Clarence, his gold watch and chain, providing he had not already bought him one of his own prior to his death. He left his son, Warren, his homestead on Park Avenue. He noted in the will that the Franklin block, left to Clarence, was the most valuable piece of his real estate, and this is why he left Harry and Warren the Meat Market and Homestead subject to Emma's life estate, respectively, in an attempt to equalize the values bequethed. Finally, Henry appointed his friend, William G. LAMB as trustee of the assets to be bequethed to his minor son, Warren.

His obituary, copied below, was located by William Billig of Michigan:

OBITUARY, WARREN DAILY TRIBUNE, JANUARY 5, 1903, PAGE 1, COLUMN 4

WAS A REMARKABLE MAN Henry A. Strong of 201 North Park avenue, this city, died Sunday morning at 2:20 o'clock. His death was the result of a very aggravated case of catarrh of the stomach. About October 1, Mr. Strong quit work and went to Cleveland to seek medical assistance. His trouble was pronounced catarrh of the stomach and an operation was recommended, but Mr. Strong refused to undertake the operation. He returned home and later consulted Dr. Hoover of Cleveland.

On December 11, Dr. Hoover, with the assistance of local physicians, made an incision into Mr. Strong's stomach and discovered that the prognosis was correct. The found further that the trouble had reached a stage that rendered an operation useless, and that his death was only a question of a few weeks. According to the physicians, Mr. Strong's condition was of about eighteen months' duration.

Henry Strong was born in Bristolville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Strong, on March 12, 1846. He learned his trade of horseshoer in Bristol an from there he went to Meadville, Pa., where he worked for a few weeks. In March, 1866, he came to Warren and for about two months worked at his trade for Geo. and Homer Reid. He then went to work at the present stand on South Park avenue, and a few months later, with John Hardy, bought out the business. A few years later he purchased Mr. Hardy's interest and since that time until his fast illness had worked and conducted the business a the same location in the same building.

Mr. Strong was married to Emma Tovey of Cleveland, April 10, 1879. To this union were born three children, Harry A., Clarence A. and Warren, all living.

In many ways Mr. Strong was a remarkable man. His life shows what industry and indomitable determination will do. Starting with no capital but good health, a strong arm and lots of push, he accumulated a fortune of $60,000. Warren people have always recognized Henry Strong as a man worthy of confidence and respect, and a man whose word was as good as his bond. Besides his home and place of business, his interests embraced the old Opera House block, the Chase block, the L & S. block, and the Kirk property in conjunction with W. G. Lamb, and the Franklin block owned jointly with W. G. Lamb and Wm. Wallace.

He was a member of the Royal Arcanum having joined that order Feb. 3, 1882.

The funeral will be held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Rev. Henry E. Cooke of the Episcopal church will officiate.

It appears the Mary died sometime after the 1910 census, and that Frank remarried, based on the following Geagua County Records Marriage record, which shows Frank A. Strong married Mrs. Addie L. Smith 7-5-1917 7 - 301 Grooms parents David B. Strong and Lenora A. Sherman. (Courtesty of Rhodene Frederick) According to her death certificate, Addie's maiden name was BOWEN.

As Frank and Addie were not married until 1917, Hazel must have been born while Addie was still married to a SMITH.

Frank may have temporarily moved West with his youngest son George, as it appears he was living with George in Winslow Arizona in 1930. Addie is not listed on the census with him, even though Frank is shown as married. Perhaps they were temporarily separated. Frank appears to have returned to Ohio, as the following cemetery listing can be found for he, and for Addie in 1931.

This shows her as a daughter of David by his first wife, in error. Betsey had been dead several years before Sarah Ella was born. The actual tombstone, however, shows her to be a daughter of David and Leanora.

Notes:

For many years, it was assumed by his descendants that Ralph's middle name was pronounced Bernard. However, on Ralph's death certificate, filed by son Walter, his middle name was listed as "Brenard." Walter also named one of his sons after his father. Although the exact spelling he intended is not clear, his son's name was pronounced "Branyard." It appears, therefore, that Ralph shared his middle name with his father "Brainerd," a name that was apparently common in New England, but rare in rural Texas and Oklahoma.

There was another Ralph Strong, age 4, on the 1860 Ohio census, the son of Samuel Strong of nearby Lake County, However, his death certificate shows that he was the son of Samuel STRONG and Sarah SCHRAM, and was born in July 1, 1856.

Ralph and Mary Ella Hall were married in 1878 in Hunt County, Texas. They were living west of Hunt in 1880, in Collin County, Texas. Mary's parents, Mash and Eliza Hall lived in Collin County as well. By 1900, they had relocated to Hopkins County, Texas.

There was one other Strong family in Collin County in 1880, however, it does not appear that they were related to Ralph as they were from Tennessee.

In April, 1894, Henry A. Strong of Trumbull County, Ohio served as the administrator of the estate of his step-mother, Leanora A. (Sherman) STRONG. He filed a petition to sell lands. In his petition, he filed an affidavit for service by publication on Ralph Strong. The index page to the Estate shows he tried to send the statutorily required "notice to non residents" to Ralph in both Baird, Callihan (sic) County, Texas and in Blue, Indian Territory, apparently with no response. Blue is due North of Hunt County, where Ralph and Ella were married. Baird is in southwest of Collin County, near Abilene, in Callahan County. Ralph and his family apparently next move to the northeast of Collin County, as by 1896 the family was in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas. At the time of the 1900 Federal Census, they were still in Hopkins County.

The 1900 census also indicated that Mary was the mother of nine children, eight of whom were living. According to Viola Strong Weaver's Bible, presented to her by her parents in August, 1950, the ninth child was apparently a son named Harry. He appears to have died young, as neither his birth or death date is recorded in the Bible.

Ralph next moved his family North, to the Oklahoma Terrotory, where Mary Ella died in 1905.

Ralph moved even further westward, where he is listed on the 1910 Roosevelt County, New Mexico Territory Census, Precinct No 12, Dora, with his second wife, Mary Stockbridge, and youngest son Ernest.

This census is notable as it shows Ralph's father as being born in New York instead of Ohio. Charles Strong read the Roosevelt County, New Mexico census for the year of 1920, but was not able to locate the family. Nor was he able to locate the family on the soundex for New Mexico.

Homer Strong reported that in additona to farming his grandfather, Ralph, had worked both as a jockey and a plainclothes policeman. Ralph's great-granddaughter, Peggy Patty, reports that Ralph actually was a bounty hunter, as was his oldest son Augustus (her grandfather). Plainclothes policeman was simply the more polite term the family used to describe this work, of which they were not proud.

On April 15, 1929, about 10 days before his death, Ralph and Mary entered into a warranty deed with Mrs. C. E. MITCHELL. They apparently sold her approximately 160 acres of land for $2,400. Mrs. MITCHELL also became responsible for the mortgage of $500. This land was situated in the Southwest Quarter of Section 24, Township 5 South, Range 34, East of the New Mexico Meriden in the County of Roosevelt, State of New Mexico. They sold it to her "reserving...the use of three (3) acres...the dwelling house, out-buildings, garden and orchards for a home as long as (either or both) of them shall live." On January 16, 1924, they had mortgaged this same 160 acres of land to Beulah H. Gibson for $500. Mary's sister, Celia Stockbridge, was married to a Frank MITCHELL.

In late April, 1929, the following article was published in the DUNCAN BANNER

SONS BRING FATHER HERE FOR TREATMENT

"R.B. Strong, father of Burt and W.W. Strong of Duncan, is being brought here from Partalas (sic), N.M. in a Beeson Grantham ambulance. Burt Strong left with the ambulance Tuesday to get his father, who had been in ill health for some time. They are expected here Thursday morning. Mr. Strong has been at Partalas for several months."

Ralph was moved into the home of his son Burt after being brought to Duncan. However, Burt and his father soon had a tremendous fight, and he moved Ralph to Walter's home. Barney remembers his parents living on the 700 block of Stephens about this time, although the obituary below lists this as the 700 block of 8th street. It is not known which of these addresses is correct. Barney also recalls that Burt and Ralph reconciled immediately before Ralph died.

Ralph's obituary was published in the Duncan (Oklahoma) Eagle Weekly on Thursday, April 25, 1929:

RALPH B. STRONG TAKEN BY DEATH

"Ralph B. Strong, 71 years of age, passed away here at 3:15 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home of Walter W. Strong, 705 S. 8th Street. Cancer was the cause of his death. Funeral services were held at the Beeson Grantham Chapel at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. T.P. Haskins of the Baptist Church officiating. Burial was at the Lawton Cemetery.

The deceased was a pioneer resident of New Mexico. He had homesteaded there 22 years ago and lived at Portales. He was brought to the home of his son here in Grantham Ambulance about three weeks ago, when his illness became more serious.

Surviving are the wife, seven sons, seventeen grandchildren, and three brothers. [Note: The surviving brothers would have been Frank, Fred and EITHER Charles or George.] The sons are Walter W. and Burt of Duncan, Claude and Earl of Cement, R.J. and A.H. of Tintino (sic), New Mexico, and Earnest of Toledo, Oregon."

On the death certificate, Walter W. Strong was the informant. He indicated that the parents of Ralph Brenard Strong were not known.

Rhodene Frederick found the following records relating to Ralphs burial at the Highland Cemetery in Lawton (Section 3276):

Notes:

Charles was not listed on the 1860 census, although he was shown as age 11 in 1870. He most likely was born shortly after the 1860 census was taken, or simply missed by the enumerator. He is mentioned by name in the 1894 probate records of Leanora Strong's estate, and also in the obituary of his sister Alice in 1912, so he was alive until at least that date. In Alice's obituary, he was shown as of Dorset, Ohio.

There is a 20 year old Charles Strong, born in Ohio with parents born in NY and OH, working as a single Farm Laborer in the home of David FRANCIS in Piermont, Ashtabula, OH at the time of the 1880 Federal Census. There was NOT a Charles Strong in Ashtabula in the index for the 1870 index, ten years earlier, so it is possible, so this is likely his listing in 1880. He was not found in the census indexes for 1900 or thereafter, however.

There was a Charles Strong, born in Ohio ca. 1858 that was living in or around Champaign County, Illinois from 1880 through his death in 1930. That Charles Strong, however is not David B. Strong's son. His death certificate shows that he was born in Toledo, Ohio and that his father was Frederick Silas Strong.

Alberta's death in 1906 was probably as a result of childbirth, daughter Mary Alberta being born just 9 days prior to her mothers death. It was obviously devasting to the family. Fred or his youngest daughters have not yet been located 1910 or 1920 census index. The older children appear to have scattered. Robert S. Strong, the SFAA Historian, indicates that Fred left the family after the children were born.

At the time of the 1910 census, 22 year-old Anna and 9 year-old Grace were living with their grandparents, Harmon and Ann Osborne, in Bristol. Daughters Mabel, age 21, and Belle, age 19, were living with their Aunt Alice Strong CUTTING in the fourth ward of Youngstown. Harmon, age 16, was listed as a "hired man" in the home of Cass MILLS in Farmington Township, Trumbull County. Harry, age 14, was listed as a "boy to raise" in the home of Wallace BOLES in Southington Township, Trumbull County.

Fred and Alberta are buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Bristol.

Fred Strong

Fred Strong, 81, resident of Orwell for the past two years, died at the home of his brother in new Lyme Friday at midnight. He had been living there for the past few weeks.

Surviving are eight children, 10 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

The body is at the Paine Funeral Home in Orwell, where funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 pm. Friends may call at the funeral home at any time.

Mrs. Alice M. Cutting

Mrs. Alice M. Cuting, wife of Royal S. Cutting, dies at the family residence, 1015 Mount Pleasant street, Sunday at 10 p.m. from pneumonia. She had been ill only a few days and coming suddenly as it did her death was a very severe shock to the family and friends.

Mrs. Cutting whose maiden name was Alice Strong, was born in 1865 in Bristolville where she grew up and was married twenty-eight years ago to Royal Cutting, who survives with the following children: Glen Cutting, Mrs. James Shipp, and Alberta Cutting, all of Youngstown. There are also three brothers, Frank Strong, Chardon, O., Charles Strong, Dorset, O., and Fred Strong of Gary, Ind.

Mrs. Cutting had resided in Youngstown for a number of years and was member of the Epworth M. E. church. During her residence here she had gained the friendship of many people who highly respected her and regret her passing, and who sympathize with the family in the loss of a devoted wife and mother.

Funeral services will be held in the residence Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock. Thursday at 9:30 a.m. the remains will be taken to Bristolville where services will be held from the M. E. church at 12 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Bristolville cemetery. (Courtesy of WIlliam Billig).

Notes:

According to his enlistment records, Augustus was a Private in Co. G, 4th Texas Infantry during the Spanish American War. As he was only 19 years old at the time of his enlistment, R. B. Strong had to sign his consent. This consent was given at Sulphur Springs, Texas on the 5th of July, 1898. It was noted that he had been a resident of Sulphur Springs, Texas for 2 years. This was witnessed by Frank Bridgeman. At the time of his enrollment, Augustus was 19 years, 9 months old, 5'4 inches tall, and weighed 126 pounds stripped, light complexion, grey eyes, light hair. He had a scar above his left knee. He was born in Farmersville, Collin County, Texas. His occupation was listed as farmer. The Roll show that he mustered in on July 22, 1898 in Houston, Texas, presumably at Camp Tom Ball (in the Heights area of Houston).

According to the company muster rolls, he was present in Weatherford, Texas for the periods ending August 31, 1898; October, 1898; December, 1898, and he mustered out on March 10, 1899 in Camp Mosby, San Antonio, Texas. Camp Mosby was located at the Jockey Club grounds, a bicycle and horse race track, along River Avenue in San Antonio. The golf clubhouse at Brackenridge Park replaced the Jockey Club building in 1923. The camp was in the vicinity of the golf clubhouse.

It appears Augustus was never sent outside of the country. On November 30, 1901 in Acme, Texas, he received an additional $8.84 for compensation for being mustered into the United States service for the war with Spain.

At the time of the 1900 Census, Augustus was living in the 81st District of Duke Township, Greer County, Oklahoma, with 22 year old John Garren of Missouri, a Farmer. 21 year old Augustus was listed as John's "Partner," presumably a co-owner of the farm. Henry Garren, age 45 and John's father, was listed as a Farm Laborer. He was married to Mary Gertrude Gay in nearby Cotton County in 1906.

In 1910, Augustus was listed as a "Hired Man" in the home of A.G. Gowan in the 61st District of Beaver Township, Comanche County, Oklahoma. He was listed as age 30, Married, and born in the United States. His wife, 23 year old Mary Strong, was a Patient in the Oklahoma Hospital for the Insane in Norman, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. She was listed as the mother of one child, still living. Their three year old daughter, Agnes, was living with her grandparents in the 62 District of Straws Twp, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

By 1920, Augustus and Mary were living together again, with their daughter Agnes. They were in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. The family was listed as follows: 1022 Penn. Avenue Strong, A.H. Head M W 41 M Tx Tx Tx Boiler Maker Railroad Shop Strong, Mary Wife F w 32 M Mississippi Alabama Mississippi Strong, Agnes Dau F w 12 S Ok Tx Miss

The house listed immediately preceding theirs was that of his brother, Claude.

After Gus was divorced, he lived with Rolla Strong in Portales, New Mexico around December, 1925. He and Rolla later moved to Clovis, New Mexico.

In 1930, Augustus could not be located on the census index. He was likely in New Mexico or Colorada, where he and Rolla had a ranch near Craig. Mary was listed as a patient at the Oklahoma State Hospital in Woodward, Oklahoma. Agnes, a waitress, and her four-month old daughter, Peggy, were living with her Uncle Earl in Chandler, Grady, Oklahoma.

By 1942, Gus and Rolla had moved to Porterville, California, where they lived nearby their brother Earl Strong.

His death certificate indicates that he was a self employed rancher, a veteran of the Spanish American War, and a widower. He died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Livermore, Alameda County, and had been in Alameda County for 185 days prior to his death, presumably a resident of the Veterans Hospital. He had lived in California for two years prior to his death, and his last usual address was 395 Elta Vista Dr in Porterville. He was buried at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.

Augustus married Mary Gertrude Gay on 10 May 1906 in Walters, Cotton County, Oklahoma. Mary (daughter of William Gay and Amelia J. "Melia" Counts) was born in Oct 1886 in Water Valley, Yalobusha County, Mississippi; died in 1955 in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Walter's middle name, Winfield, does not appear to be a family name. It is assumed that he was named in honor of General Winfield Scott.

In 1907, Walter was living in Comanche County, Oklahoma (Source: Estate Settlement of Mash & Eliza J. Hall). As he and Tessie Soukup were married sometime before 1908, this is presumably where they met.

According to the June 18, 1908 WALTERS (Oklahoma) JOURNAL, "Walter Strong who worked at the barber trade last fall, but who for some time has been in Lawton and Temple has returned to Walters and is at work for E.J. Blair, proprietor of Modern Barber Shop." Walter was mentioned again in the April 1, 1909 issue of THE NEW ERA, "Walter Strong and family left here about two weeks ago to visit relatives in Prague, Oklahoma. They have decided to locate there." Charles Strong located the family in the 1910 Prague, Oklahoma telephone directory, published March 24, 1910. The residential phone number of Walter Strong was 89. It appears that there were 148 phone numbers assigned to both residents and businesses at the time.

At the time of the 1910 Federal Census, he and Tessie were living at 13th and Broadway, Creek Township, Prague City, Lincoln County, Oklahoma.

Tessie died when she was only 29 of what her family called "kidney poisoning." It may have been complication from the birth of her twin sons five months earlier.

After Tessie died, Walter moved to Iowa City, Wichita County, Texas. Iowa City was west of Wichita Falls, and on the Burlington Northern Rail line. He was living in a boarding house, on Block M, owned by Dale and Vivian Pierce from Iowa. Many of the lodgers in the house worked as Oil Field Laborers. Walter's occupation was listed as Barber. Presumably he had more customers, and could make more money, near Wichita Falls than he could have made by remaining in Lawton. He was listed on the 1920 Federal Census, enumerated in January 1920, as Walter Strawn (sic), Lodger, M W, 38, Wd, Texas, Ohio, Missouri Barber Barber Shop. He was listed immediately following a 19 year old Roy D. West, born in Mississippi, who was a bookkeeper at a bank. This does not appear to be his future step-son, as the age and place of birth are different. Also living in the boarding home with him was 24 year old John R. McLEMORE. In an amazing coincidence, meaning absolutely nothing, Walter's great grandson, Tom STRONG, would some sixty years later marry Roy McLemore's half first cousin, twice removed, Melinda McLEMORE.

Homer, Viola and Barney were temporarily cared for by a woman they called "Grandma Dominic." As far as anyone knows, she was not a relative. They can be found in her home, listed as boarders, at the time of the 1920 census.

Walter's youngest son, Jack, was very ill after his mother died, and was taken in by Walter's Aunt, Rosetta Hall.

Walter apparently moved back to Oklahoma shortly after the 1920 census, as he an Stella Crouch were married in Grady county in June 1920. Stella had two sons from previous marriages, Roy WEST and Cecil Afton LEWIS.

Barney remembers going to first grade in Bison, Garfield County, Oklahoma shortly after his father remarried Stella. There is a picture of Viola, Homer, Barney, Cecil and Roy, in the possession of both the Lewis and Strong families, that was taken in Bison. All the boys are in ties except Homer. Cecil obviously borrowed an adult's tie, and Barney remembers his tie being tucked in. Barney also remembers playing baseball in Bison, and scarring his leg badly on a broken snuff jar after one game. Homer recalls also living the city of Waukomis, near Bison.

Stella and Walter later had another son, Robert Henry Strong. They lived on a farm near Wellston.

At the time of the 1930 census, the family was living in the 2nd Ward, King Township, Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma.

Notes:

Although he was shown on the 1900 Census as Leon, his family always knew him as Lee. According to his death certificate, he had lived in Lawton for 14 years.

Lee's obituary appeared in the LAWTON CONSTITUTION on December 29, 1915:

LEE STRONG DIES TODAY Man Accidentally Shot Last Night While Wrestling Over A Revolver

Lee Strong, a farmer residing six miles east of Lawton on the Barber farm, who was accidentally shot yesterday evening, died this morning at ten o'clock at the Southwestern Hospital, following an operation, which was performed in the hope of saving his life, but he was too weak from the loss of blood to withstand the strain. The accident was purely accidental. Strong and the farm hand had finished loading fodder, and had been hunting rabbits with a .38 revolver. It was discharged hitting Strong in the back. Medical aid was summoned from Lawton and later he was brought to the hospital. The deceased leaves a wife and son; one brother in Los Angeles, one brother in Lawton and father in Mexico (sic). He was 31 years old. The remains will be held at the Ritter Undertaking Parlors until they hear from relatives. (As transcribed by Lynell Gentry Cordell).

LEE STRONG FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY

The funeral of Lee Strong, who died Wednesday morning from the results of being accidentally shot by a farm hand of the Barber farm, was held yesterday afternoon at the Baptist church at 2:30. Rev. A.L. Leake conducted the funeral services. Relatives of the deceased accompanied the body to its last resting place.

Birth Record

In the Cotton County Oklahoma birth records 1912-1918 Book 14 listed the following:

Father, Strong, Lee, and A. E. Choate May 30, 1916 by a Dr. Jones

Since Lee died the prior December, his wife was apparently pregnant.

In the Comanche County History Volume I, 1985, published by the Southwestern Historical Society, has a historical notation on Junction City and Geronimo, Oklahoma.

January 1902, 13 miles south of Lawton, Oklahoma, Junction City was platted and lots were sold for as little at $2.00. It had a few small shops and a saloon, and a Dr. Samuel Makemson. Two miles north Geronimo was platted prior to the arrival of the Rock Island Line. ( Homer Strong was born in Junction City.)

Presently, Junction City is completely gone, and there's not much left of Geronimo. The railroad is gone. There is one little cafe, a grocery store, and a filling station. It's a quaint little town.

Texas Obituaries and Death Records/Erath County

Died--On last Saturday night about 2 o'clock, Harry Strong, the little 4 months old baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. Strong. We extend to the bereaved parents our warmest sympathy.

This is ASSUMED but not verified as certain, to be Ralph and Mary's son Harry who died as an infant. Four years earlier, Ralph had been living in nearby Callahan County, living and working at a railroad camp. It is assumed he was in Erath county for the same reasons. The family later moved back to North Texas, and then to Oklahoma.

Notes:

Burt was listed as Berthodne on the 1900 Texas census. His descendants were unfamiliar with the origin or accuracy of that name, having always known him simply as Burt. Burt lived in Duncan at the time of his father's death in 1929.

While examining records in Collin County, Texas, Charles Strong located probate records of R.B. Strong, Guardian, Estate of Burton R. Strong, et al. It was in Vol A3, P656-666. The records indicate that "R.B. Strong, guardian of the estate of Burton R. Strong, Claud E. Strong, Raleigh J. Strong, Earl E. Strong, Ernest R. Strong, would respectfully show to the court that it is necessary to sell the real estate of said wards for the education and maintenance of said minors, for this that all of the personal property belonging to said estate has been sold, and the proceeds thereof, and insufficient there for, and he refers to the sworn exhibit hereto attached and made part of this application. He further show that the real estate desired to be sold belonging to each minor is described as follows; the one-eighty eighth (1/88) undivided interest of each of said minors in and to the following tracts of land-----situated in Collin County Texas part of the L.B. Outlaw survey-----First tract---part of that portion set apart to and known as the widows share in the N.E. Corner of the 1000 acre tract sold by S.M. & W.H. Horton to A.K., J.L., and M.B. Morrow and described as follows....Second tract---Being also a part of said 1000 acre tract out of the L.B. Outlaw survey...." R.B. (Ralph) had applied for the Letters, Guardinship on 3 October 1908.

The guardianship detailed above pertained just to the minor children of R.B. Strong, and did not include Augustus, Walter, or Lee. Presumably they were above the age 18 and inherited their 1/88 share of land outright. Additional land records located by Charles Strong show that the land in question appears to have been originally purchased by Mash and Eliza Hall in 1862 in Collin County.

I was not able to locate him at the time of the 1910 Census.

At the time of the 1920 Census, he was living with his wife and daughter in the 167 District of Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma.

Apparently, Claude moved to Colorado, leaving his wife and children in Oklahoma, sometime in the 1930's, and lived there until his 1942 death. His exact whereabouts during this time period were unknown. His son Ralph, of Clinton, Oklahoma stated to Charles Strong (of Edinburg, Texas) that he saw Claude for a moment, he thinks in Anadarko, Oklahoma while he was driving an ambulance for the Civilian Conservation Corps.

This appears as if it could be Claude's listing at the time of the 1930 census, despite the slight discrepency in the way his name was listed. He was shown as a veteran of World War I, which Charles Strong of Edinburg, Texas does not remember. This may or may not be the correct person, and/or the correct veteran information.

CLAUDE E. STRONG, GREYSTONE RANCHER DIES IN HOSPITAL

Claude E. Strong, Greystone rancher, died at the Solandt hospital in Hayden, March 18, following a serious illness of about two months.
He was admitted to the hospital January 23. A ruptured stomach, combined with other ailments was given as the cause of death.
Mr. Strong had been a resident of Greystone for the past two years.
He was born October 30, 1891, in Collin county, Texas. He was raised in Oklahoma and lived there until he came to Moffat County to make his home with two of his brothers.
He was married November 20, 1915, in Bureau (sic) County, Oklahoma, but had been separated from his wife for some time.
He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Powell, of Carter, Okla., and Ruby Smith, of Albuquerque, N. M.; two sons, Walter of Willa, Okla., and Ralph of Clinton, Okla.; two grandsons and one grand daughter; six brothers, Augustus and Rolla J. of Greystone, B. R. of Chickasha, Okla., W. W. of Lawton, Okla., E. E., who resides in California, and E. R. who lives in the state of Washington.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church here, Sunday afternoon at 1:30 with the Rev. Roy Walker in charge of the service.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery under direction of I. J. Robacker.

NOTES by Charles Richard Strong, a Grand Nephew of Claude. This information obtained in July 2000 in Craig, Colorado.

Through a library search in Craig, it was discovered that uncle Claude was buried in the old Fairview section of the town cemetery. Records show he was placed in section F (Fairview) lot 53. It was the South half of that lot. There is no head stone or marker of any kind.

The local Funeral home helped me find this section. The North half contains the remains of Emma and John Easley. Claude is east of a Morris Family plot and next to the West Road.

Peggy Patty Baker of Yukon, Oklahoma (Grand Daughter of Augustus Homer Strong) was in Craig and the ranch when she was a young lady. She said the "busted gut" was probably peritonitis. The ranch is at least 60 miles over rough mountain roads to Craig.

Claude spent from January 23 to March 18th (54 days) in the Hospital. This long stay may have caused Rolla to sell part of his ranch to pay for hospital and burial of Claude. In July 1942, he sold about 70.65 acres of land out of the original 635.65 acres. Note that in April 1948, Rolla Changed the title to ranch to himself and Gus as joint tenancy and survivorship. Rolla and Gus sold the ranch of 560 acres to a R. F. Brown on May 10, 1956.

Claude married Della May Murley on 20 Nov 1915 in Oklahoma. Della was born about 1898 in Taney County, Missouri; died on 18 Feb 1973 in Mangum, Greer County, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Rolla served in the Navy during World War I. In 1910, he was living with his brother Walter's family in Prague, Comanche County, Oklahoma. He had moved to Oklahoma City prior to the 1920 census, where he was residing in a boarding home. He later homesteaded around Portales, New Mexico, eventually moving to Greystone, Colorado where he also patented land. Charles Strong spoke to some old time residents of Portales, New Mexico on a research trip. One such resident, J. B. Bates, remembered that Rolla worked for his father durign the winters.

His Colorado land patent was subscribed and sworn on October 17, 1929 at the Department of the Interior in Denver, Colorado. J.C. Thomas and A.H. Strong were witnesses. The land was W 1/2 E 1/2, W 1/2 Section 13, NE 1/4 Sec. 14 Tp. 8 N. Range 102 West 6th Principal Meridan, containing 640 acres. He used to land to raise catlle.

His last move westward was to California, where he continued to ranch.

STRONG ROLLO JEFFERSON 10/17/1894 HALL M OKLAHOMA TULARE 08/29/1980

His death certificate indicated that he was the son of Ralph Strong-Ohio and Mary Hall-Missouri. It also shows that he never married. His occupation was shown as a self employed rancher of 40 years. His address at the time of his death was 237 So. Alta Vista, Porterville. It was indicated that he died as the result of a two car collision on Highway 65 and Avenue 128 in Porterville, in which he was the driver.

Notes:

Per the 1900 Texas Census, his middle initial was J, and he was born in Texas. However, according to his descendants, his middle name was Everett. They also list his place of birth as Indian Territory. At the time of the 1910 Federal Census, twelve year-old Earl was living in Comanche County, Oklahoma, and enumerated with Levi and Sarah Hoskins as a foster child. His father, Ralph, was living in New Mexico at the time, with his new wife and his younger brother Ernest. One of Earl's daughters told Charles Strong that Earl disliked his new stepmother, whom he called "the old lady" and ran away from New Mexico. The relationship, if any, between the Strong family and Levi Hoskins is unknown.

At the time of the 1930 Census, Earl and his wife, along with their five children, were living in Chandler, Grady County, Oklahoma. Living with them, as well, was his niece, Agnes Strong, and her four month old daughter, Peggy Lynn.

His death certificate listed him as the son of Ralph Strong and Ellie Hall. It was shown, in error, that they were from Illinois. It was also stated that for the prior 50 years he had been self-employed in the Agriculture business. His address was shown as 2125 South Prospect, Porterville, California. The informant was Velma Powell, his daughter, and she was shown as having the same address.

Notes:

The youngest son of Ralph and Mary Ella was an infant at the time of the 1900 Hopkins County, Texas census. In 1910, he was living with his father and stepmother in Roosevelt County, New Mexico. He can' t be located at the time of the 1920 census. In 1930, he was living in Toledo, Lincoln County, Oregon. His wife was listed as Fay, and was shown as being born in 1894 in Oklahoma, which would make her some five years older than him. However, the death certificate for Dorothy Fay Strong instead shows her as being born in 1903, making her four years younger than Ernest.

At one time, he was erroneously thought to have as died in California in 1965, based on the SSDI. However, that death was not for the correct Ernest Strong.

Ernest actually died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Oregon, approximately three weeks after being struck by a pickup at the cross walk of Broadway and Olive on September 30, at 5:15 p.m. The actual cause of death was listed as an accident, and was due to a pulmonary embolism of both lungs.

The death certificate indicates he has moved to Eugene around 1955. His occupation was listed as Houseman at the Eugene Hotel. His place of birth was shown as Texas, and his parents were listed as Ralph and Mary Ellen Strong. The informant was his wife, Dorothy F(ay) Strong.

Mrs. Nora Belle Rudersdorf, aged 54, of 4212 Rush Blvd, wife of Harley Rudersdorf, died of a heart ailment at 6:05 p.m. Monday at her home after an illness of three years. Born Feb. 13, 1891, in Bristolville, she was a daughter of Fred and Alberta STRONG. She lived in Youngstown pratically all her life, coming from Bristolville as a child. She was a member of Pleasant Grove U.P. Church, Miriam Chapter of Eastern Star, and Daughters of America. Besides her husband, Harley, whom she married 32 years ago, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Alberta KISER and Mrs. Ruth HUMPHREY and a son, Gordon RUDERSDORF, all of Youngstown; four sisters, Mrs. William GRIFFITH, Grace STRONG, and Alberta CUTTING, all of Youngstown, and Mrs. Paul SHALLENBERGER of Warren; two brothers, Harmon STRONG of Youngstown and Harry STRONG of Tuscon, Ariz., and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Hofmeister Memorial Funeral Home where friends may cal lthis evening and Wednesday evening.

A biography of Hezekiah Strong notes that daughter Ella had three children, one of whom survived and was living with his grandparents as of the publication date, circa 1890's. That grandson was listed as CARLTON WRIGHT. However, at the time of the 1880 census, it appears that Ella was already deceased, and that only her four year old son, Willis Wright was living with his grandparents. Perhaps Carlton and Willis were the same person? Kevin Wright, a descendant of Peter Wright through his second wife, has no information about Peter Carleton Wright, but does indicate he was the third child of Ella and Peter.

This was the only Howard Strong born between 1925-1927 with a card issued in Arizona. The only other Howard Strong born in 1926 had his card issued in Massachusetts. He was born in April, however, so he can't be totally discounted.

Agnes lived with her grandparents at the time of the 1910 census, her parents in 1920, and with her Uncle Earl Strong at the time of the 1930 census. She was listed as a waitress at a hotel, and divorced. Her daughter, Patty, was four months old at the time.

During the Depression, a Captain in the Salvation Army sent Agnes to be interviewed by Walter Patty. He had a boarding house, and was widowed with several small children, and apparently could not keep housekeepers. The Salvation Army captain thought Agnes was well quailified despite her youth. She was hired, and she and her daughter Peggy moved into an apartment at the boarding house. Over a period of time, Walter and Agnes developed an affinity for each other and were married. He was a good husband, and good father to both his own children and to Peggy, who took his last name.

Homer was born in a Leap Year's day, February 29, 1908. He used March 1 as his "official" birthday, however, so he could celebrate it each year instead of only once every four years.

He was eight when his mother died, and twelve when his father remarried. Neither Homer nor Barney were pleased with their new step-mother, Stella Crouch. They left home around 1925, and went to Portales, New Mexico, to live with their Uncle Rolla Strong. They grew enough beans and maize to feed the horses, and lived on Rolla's $17 a month pension from the Navy. They also spent sometime with their grandfather, Ralph, at his Ranch in nearby Pep.

In 1927, Homer moved back to Duncan, Oklahoma to be closer to his parents. He worked for a cotton gin. In 1929, he went to live with his Uncle Alois Soukup in Prague, Oklahoma. His Uncle died in an explosion while trying to rechannel a creek. Homer and a friend were in the creek setting the dynamite, while Alois on the bank putting in the fuses. Homer lost the hearing in one ear as a result of this explosion. After his Uncles death, he returned to Duncan. This is where he met his wife, Anna Laura at a dance. At the time of the 1930 census, he was a boarder with the Elmer Michels family in Duncan.

At the time, Homer was painting signs for Fuzzy Carter, at his sign company. Bill and Charles Strong both caddied for Fuzzy years later, when they were teenagers. Fuzzy had a sing up during WWII that said, in one continuous statement, "Quityourdamnbellyachingandbuymorewarbonds." This sign was on the side of the Palace Theatre. In 1936, Homer went to work for Coca Cola for $15 a week, painting signs. It was during the depression and work was scare. Roonie recounts that one day they simply ran out of food. Their eldest son was just an infant. Roonie said all they had in the house was one heal end of a loaf of bread. She borrowed a spoonful of syrup from their neighbor, and put that on the bread for Charles. She and Homer did without that day. Although there were many other days that food and money were very sparse, that was the only day they did totally without.

Homer was drafted in 1943, and helped train men at Fort Sill. He was discharged as a Sergeant First Class on March 15, 1949, and forever after was known by his nickname "Sarg." He was a Radio Repairman (Instructor) 8648, and eventually was in charge of the radio repair school at Fort Sill. Charles Strong notes that Homer's being drafted was what brought the family out of poverty and put them on the road to economic stability.

Homer went back to Coca Cola after the war, and then to Halliburton. He worked for Halliburton from 1951 to 1972. He was a sign painter and worked in their carpentery shop.

His military records show that he completed 8 years of Grammer School, but did not attend High School. His wife Roonie recounted that Homer was always a bit defensive about his lack of a formal education. He worked hard later in his life to make up for this. He read extensively, and took continuing education courses in subjects such as Spanish. He loved music, and had a wide collection of tapes, ranging from country and western to Spanish Flamenco to opera. Although he had no training in music, he would write out the scores of his favorite songs by listening to them over and over again, recreating them on his keyboard, and then writing them out. He also loved to do the daily crossword puzzle, in pen. After they retired, he and Roonie were able to travel to Europe, where they stayed where they visited their son Bill, who was stationed in Germany.

Homer's obituary in the Duncan, Oklahoma newspaper read as follows:

H.R. "Sarg" Strong, 82, 1806 Birch, died Wednesday, September 19, 1990, in a Duncan hospital. A Rosary will be at 7:30 pm Friday in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be at 10 am Saturday in Assumption Catholic Church with Father Paul Gillespie officiating. Burial will be in Duncan cemetery.

Mr. Strong was born March 1, 1908 in Lawton. He was retired from Halliburton Services, and a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1943 to 1948. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church. On October 23, 1931 (sic), he married Anna L. Payne in Waurika.

Ms. Weaver died Aug. 3, 2009 in Henrietta.

Ms. Weaver was born Feb. 27, 1910 in Prague, Okla., to Walter Winfield and Tessie Rose Soukup Strong. She married Leroy "Snip" Weaver in Duncan, Okla., on March 28, 1929. She was a long time member of Whaley United Methodist Church and she loved to cook. Ms. Weaver was a clerk at the Streets Pharmacy for many years.

She is survived by her grandson Jim and his wife Susan Weaver of Dean, great grandchildren Jake Weaver of Dean, Alex and wife Heather Weaver of Midland, and Nick Weaver of Austin, great-great granddaughters Olivia and Alexis Weaver of Midland, and her brother Barney Strong. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded by her parents, her husband, her son Donald Joe Weaver, her brothers Homer, Jack, Jake, and Bob Strong and Cecil Lewis.

Notes:

Charles R. Strong of Edinburg called his uncle Barney on March 24, 2005 to ask him what his given name was. Barney said it was "Something strange" that he had never liked much, so he had always gone by Barney. Both Robert Strong and Viola Weaver confirmed this. In his mother's obiturary, he was listed as "Branyard," so he presumably was named Brainerd in honor of his grandfather, Ralph Brainerd and great-grandfather David Brainerd. He was a veteran of World War II, later working as a welder.

BARNEY FRANK STRONG

Funeral services for Barney Frank Strong, 96, of Gainesville are set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 at the Grand Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Black officiating.

Burial will follow with military honors in Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Barney went to be with the Lord Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at his residence.

Barney was born in Prague, Okla. to Walter and Bessie (sic) Strong. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served in the Burma India Theater during World War II and then was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Violet Stanley on Jan. 27, 1946 in Lawton, Okla. and then moved to Gainesville in 1951. Barney was the owner of Strong's Welding Service for many years and a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church for over 50 years. He loved to play golf, fish and most of all play dominoes at the Stanford House.

Barney is survived by his daughter, Jeanie and her husband Harry Gootas; son, Benny and his wife Pam Strong; grandchildren, Chris and his wife Amy Kuhn, Todd and his wife Julianne Kuhn, Juli and her husband Phil Metzler, Jennifer Barna, Alyssa Strong and Amber Strong; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Homer, Jack and Bob Strong, Cecil Lewis and Roy West and sister, Viola Weaver.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Chris and Todd Kuhn and Phil Metzler; great-grandson, Ty Kuhn and nephews, Charles and Tommy Lewis.

The family will receive friends and loved ones this evening, Jan. 5, 2011 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Home Hospice of Cooke County.

Most of the information below was obtained on January 29, 1999 at Donald Joe Weavers ranch in St. Joe, Texas. Tape recordings were made over several hours. The quality of the tapes is poor due to background noise. Those present were Viola Strong Weaver, her son Don and his wife Pat, Barney Strong and his wife Violet, Anna L. (Rooney) Strong, Jack Neill Strong, and the compiler, Charles Strong.

Jack and his twin brother Jake were born on Christmas Day 1915, Jake dying shortly after his birth. Jack's mother, Tessie Soukup Strong died about six months later. Shortly after his mother's death, one of Walter Strong's aunts, Rosetta Neill came to visit the Strong family in Prague, Oklahoma. Jack was very ill. Rosetta and her husband, Hamilton Neill, took Jack home with them to Vinson (Harmon) County, Oklahoma to better care for him.

The Neill's farm was large and even had indoor plumbing, a rarity in rural Oklahoma in 1916. Jack went to school in Vinson, about 8 miles from the farm. In the early years, he traveled to school by horse and wagon, and later on a T-Model Ford School bus. When Jack was in either the fourth or fifth grade, he was teasing some girls and got into a fight. After the fight, they told him he didn't even have a father or mother. At the age of 10 or 11, this was a shock. As he walked up the lane to the farmhouse, his mother saw that he was crying and had been fighting. His dad asked what was wrong. Jack replied, "The kids said you weren't my Papa and Mama." They came clean and stated "We are not your Mama and Papa. You were a sick little baby, and we went and got you and we picked you out to be one of our little family." This did not help one bit. At this age, one does not understand that. Jack said "As a result of this, up to this day, it is hard for me to trust anybody!" After this, it was never the same. They treated me better than their own kids. They had two boys and two girls already gone from home. I was the only child there, and they spoiled me rotten.

When Jack was 14 or 15, the Neills told him that his father, Walter Strong, was alive. Shortly after this, Mr. Neill died, and Jack took care of his mother. He had to quit school, but went back for awhile. Mrs. Neill took Jack to see Walter and his stepmother, Stella. Perhaps this was when they were living west of Lawton, around 1931 or 1932. They visited for two or three days. Jack recalls playing with some kids. They were probably Barney, Bob, and Cecil. The day before they were to go home, they were eating and Walter asked Jack if he wanted to stay with them, or go home with Mommy Neill. Jack said "I want to go home." He thought that Walter might have been hurt by this decision. The next morning, he and his mother took the bus back to Vinson, Oklahoma. He added that "All of this was in the back of my mind, and I was very confused.

The Neill's may also have been uncertain as to their relationship with Jack. On the 1920 census, he was listed as their adopted son. In 1930, he was listed simply as a lodger.

After high school in the 1930's, Jack went to work for C.R. Anthony Company as a shoe salesman in Lawton, Oklahoma. There was a disagreement one evening after a big day's sale, to military personnel on payday, and Jack was fired. It appears he had a date. When he didn't show up for work on Monday, Mr. Anthony called him up from Oklahoma City. Jack refused to go back to Lawton, but agreed to continue working for him at the Oklahoma City store.

Soon Jack was working two jobs. His second job was with a drug store. About this time he married Bernadine and needed the money. This was in the late 1930s when times were hard. Soon, he was working at the drug store during the day, and as a bartender at the Black Hotel in the evenings. This was right before World War II. He doubled his wages.

While holding down these two jobs, Jack was drafted into the army early in World War II. While working at the bar, airmen from the Will Rogers Air Corps Base who were customers advised Jack to try to become a cook in the service. Upon induction into the army, he told them he was a cook at the Black Hotel. He was given a test about cuts of meat. Having grown up on a ranch, the test was a snap. At Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he received ill-fitting clothes that afternoon, and was awakened at 4 am the next morning to scramble eggs all day in a field kitchen.

Jack was shipped to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training. While at Fort Leonard Wood, he cooked but never went through basic training, except for the rifle range. Jack was shipped overseas, first to North Africa, then to Sicily. He travelled "from the toe up through the north till the war ended." After the war, Jack was discharged in Virginia Beach, VA. Upon discharge, he hired a man with a Piper Cub plan to fly him to Oklahoma for $150, half of his mustering out pay.

Back in Oklahoma, Jack worked first for a beauty and barber supply company. Next he worked for Tom's Peanut Company. After that, he took a job selling jewelry and toys to stores in southern Oklahoma and northern Texas. He also sold buttons and zippers. He worked for the Pearl Button Company of Lansing, Iowa for 32 years. Charles R. Strong and some of his brothers and sisters recall visiting Jack several times during these years. The Button Company went bankrupt, and so went Jacks retirement. Jack next started to sell flags, banners, and sales promotion material like that foung around car lots, parades, etc. The flag business was in several locations. First Austin and Seguin, Texas. Next he went to Miami, Florida. After Florida, he lived in New Orleans, Louisiana for 9 years. Later he retired to Hawaii and loved it. Since his only income was Social Security and he could not afford trips to the states to visit his children, he moved back to the states and settled in Forth Worth around 1994.

Jack Neil Strong, 87, a retired salesman and entrepreneur died December 13th, 2003 in Fort Worth. Funeral: 1 p.m. Thursday, December 18th at Forest Ridge Funeral Home, Hurst, Texas. Robert Henry 'Bob' Strong

Funeral for Robert Henry "Bob" Strong, 84, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with David D. King, pastor, officiating.

Mr. Strong died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at his home.

Burial will be at Highland Cemetery under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.

He was born May 9, 1924, in Wellston, to Walter W. and Stella Crouch Strong. He and his family moved to Lawton, and he graduated from Lawton High School in 1943. He served in the Army during World War II in England, France, Belguim, Germany, and Austria. He served in Patton's 3rd Army and was awarded five Battle Stars as well as the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. He married Viola Bard on Aug. 4, 1956, in Lawton. She died Jan. 13, 2005. He married Billie Howeth on Feb. 16, 2008. He worked at Montgomery Wards for 40 years, retiring as the shoe department manager in 1982. He had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1965. He sang in the choir and taught the Men's Sunday School Class for eight years. He was also a member of the 50 plus choir at First Baptist Church and was a volunteer with RSVP.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; four stepdaughters and their husbands: Waynna and John Fremin, Alaska; Susan and Albert Culp, Anna Laura and Chuck Plymesser, all of Lawton; and Cathy and Dennis Mayo, Indiahoma; a brother, Barney Strong, Gainesville, Texas; a sister, Violet Weaver, Henryetta, Texas; two nieces: Sue Anna O'Hara, Houston; and Linda Williams, Sand Springs; seven nephews and their wives: Charles and Carolyn Lewis, Houston; Tommy and Elwanda Lewis, Lawton; Byron and Della Rice, Weatherford, Texas; Benny and Pam Strong, Gainesville, Texas; and Edward and Patsy Bard, Jack and Pat Bard, and David and Carol Bard, all of Lawton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two special friends: Stacie and Darrin Bain.

William Billig emailed Tom Strong in April 2005 a story told by his Aunt Florence concerning her wedding. Apparently, Uncle Red's sister, Mary Louise was a true prankster. She quilted Red's pajamas so they couldn't be worn and made sure that rice was in and over everything where they spent their wedding night.

Grandma Mable Laverne tended to rule the roost, so Grandpa's name was Griffith while my Uncle Red (William) was the boss and had his listed as Griffiths. The boys still prefer Griffiths and I believe tend to use it. I really should change it to Griffith since that is how it is spelled legally.

Graduated from Chaney High School in 1931. Worked as a receptionist/bookkeeper in a dentist's office for $5/week for one year. She then worked at Kresge's 5 & 10 store as a clerk until she got married in 1936.Mom met dad while walking up Mahoning Ave. He was in a convertible with Bob Brown, a friend. She and a friend went for a ride with the boys. They dated 20 months and got married April 24, 1936.They lived in a apartment in Greenville, PA, in Dad's cousin's house. The rent was $15/month. Dad was a foreman on the highway earning $75/month. They lived there 11 months and then moved to Youngstown where Dad got a job at United Engineering as a machinist. Lived at 139 Halls Heights with Grandma and Grandpa. They sold the house to Mom and Dad for $3000 and bought the house on LaBelle, across town."

Glenn David Cutting, 77, of 2025 S. 16th died Friday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Ed Lang officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.

Mr. Cutting was born in Youngstown, Ohio and moved to Abilene in 1946. He graduated from high school in McDonald, Ohio and attended Ohio State University.

He came to Abilene to go into the construction business with an uncle, Harry Rice. He was a cabinet maker with H&G Construction until 1979, when he became manager of Key City Millwork, retiring in 1986.

In 1984, he was recognized for master craftsmanship in carpentry. He was a charter member of Aldersgate Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. He was recognized by the American Red Cross in 1974 for saving the life of a coworker.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Cutting of Abilene; two daughters, Elinore South and Janice Stevens, both of Dallas; a brother, Harry Cutting of Florida; two sisters, Betty Davis of Ohio and Ellen Fobes of Florida; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
