Constance Tillett

Notes:

Constance Tillett was likely a daughter of Giles Tillett of Virginia, who was an early settler of Georgia. In 1773, he can be living with his wife and 4 sons and 3 daughters on 500 ares of land at the fork of Broad river (Georgia), where he built a cabin. During the American Revolution, he was purportedly an unrepentant loyalist. On 12 October 1774, in response to the Boston Tea Party, the settlers of Kyoka (Kiokee) and Broad River signed a protest "against any resolutions expressive of disloyalty to our most gracious King and the Lords and Commons of Great Britian." Everette McGrew notes that he was a member of the South Carolina Dragoons, Capt. John Harrison's Company, South Carolina Light Dragoons, St. Augustine, FL, 25 Apr 1783, along with George and James Tillett.

Constance married James McGrew before 1774 in South Carolina. James (son of Alexander McGrew and Margaret ???) was born about 1744; died about 1797 in St. Stephens, Mississippi Territory. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

According to both THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW and the notes of Robert Lee McGrew of Pearland, TX, Alexander was probably born around 1778 in South Carolina. Wynema McGrew instead shows he was born in Louisiana/Mississippi Territory, sometime prior to 1783.

He obtained a passport in St. Stephens on September 24, 1797 to go to Georgia. His father had obtained a passport to go to Georgia earlier that same year. A land record indicates that Alexander inhabited and cultivated land near the Tombigbee River around 1797. In the early 1800's he put up a $700 bond as postmaster of Woodstown, AL. In 1801 he bought some land and in 1802, he and his mother sold land in Mississippi. He signed a memorial to Congress in 1803, and in 1806 he sold, along with other heirs of James McGrew, additional land. Alexander married Elizabeth Blackburn on October 16, 1808. Since she was under 18 years old, her father had to first grant his permission. Alexander was a veteren of the War of 1812. (Nixon's Company, Mississippi Militia), serving for the entire three years of the war. On 3 February 1817, he, a brother, and brother-in-law John Johns were charged with assault and battery. Alexander was the only one who paid a fine. In October 1818, he, John Johns, and brothers (this time William, James, and John) once again were fined for assault and battery. On July 11, 1819 he registered his brand "MC."

In 1843, he was involved in a lawsuit over the ownership of a slave named Elvy he was alleged to have stolen.

Alexander and Elizabeth (Blackburn) McGrew moved to Sabine County in the mid-1840's. They may have moved to join Elizabeth's father, Gabriel Blackburn, who had received a large land grant in Sabine County in 1836. The 1845 tax roll of Sabine County listed A. McGrew as owning 5 slaves. His eldest son, James, paid tax on a horse and a wagon at the same time. Alexander operated a gristmill on the banks of the Palo Guacho Bayou. The Texas Mortality schedule for 1850 showed "Alexander McGrew, age 58, sick 10 days, died 1849 in Sabine County." Alexander's widow, Elizabeth, can be found on the 1850 Sabine County census, along with her children John, Lorenzo, Margaret, and Adaline. She later moved back to Mississippi (Perry County) with her eldest son, James McGrew.

Blanche also indicated that the McGrew family was closely connected to the Methodist Ministers of that time. Son Lorenzo Dow McGrew was apparently named after the "eccentric Methodist Lorenzo Dow. In fact he covered virtually all of the territory of the United States in his peripatetic life, from New England to the Louisiana territory, but his journeys through the Old Southwest left an especially indeliable impression..On September 3, 1804, he married an equally peculiar woman, Peggy, and then the very next morning left her for an eight month trip through the Mississippi Territory." From the book, "A Way through the Wilderness: The Natchez Trace and the Civilization of the Southern Frontier" by William C. Davis (Harper Collins, 1995). According to Robert McGrew of Pearland, the McGrew's were in fact neighbors of preacher Lorenzo Dow in St. Stephens (Alabama) in the Mississippi Territory.

There is a military marker for Alexander McGrew in the Old Milam Cemetery in Sabine County. It is inscribed with a cross and "Alexander McGrew, Pvt Capt Motts Co, 15 Miss Militia, War of 1812. [Died] 2 Oct 1849. "

"Milam Cemetery receives marker"

The Texas Historic Cemetery Dedication Ceremony for Milam Cemetery took place on Saturday, October 11, following the annual Nethery reunion...local historian Weldon McDaniel....gave a presentation outlining some of the significant historical events that took place in Milam and the importance of preserving the history of Milam Cemetery. He said as many as 85 percent of all early settlers coming into Texas put their boots in red dirt. Although San Augustine and Nacogdoches counties have a friendly battle over which is older, Milam is just as old as either of them....

Dorothy Nethery Spain had the honor of reading the script engraved on the marker:

"Milam, the first County Seat of Sabine County, has a history of travelers and visitors stretching back centuries. Native Americans and Spanish exploreres, soldiers and missionaries passed through and often camped on Las Boregas Creek. Texian settlers encountering the natural abundance echoed the words of Stephen F. Austin, who recorded in his diary entry of July 16, 1821: "We then suddenly came to an open rolling country thinly timbered soil about the color of Spanish browne, and in some places redder. This Red Land is very productive and is covered with the most luxuriant growth of grass I ever beheld in any country." The settlment first called Red Mound (Red Mount) was the seat of Government for the Sabine District since 1822, and was surveyed as a town site in 1828.

Milam Cemetery is on a high hill overlooking the historic community. The exact dated of the first burial will never be known Spanish Explorers were passing through present-day Milam as early as 1539 and camped on Las Boregas Creek a few hundred yards west of the cemetery. Local hisorians believed Anglo burials occurred here probably as early as 1775, since travelers used the campsite down the hill on the Las Boregas. The land on which the cemetery is located was granted to JOHN SMITH on Feb. 26, 1835. The first marked burial is dated 1864, although more than 100 unmarked graves are suspected. The numerous military Veterans dating back to the Creek War are interred here, as well as prominent early citizens from the CAUSEY, WEATHERRED. McGREW, and NETHERY families. Milam Cemetery may be the oldest organized cemetery in Sabine County, and cherished chronicle of generations of visitors and residents."

According to the book THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW James Tate McGrew is first heard of when he signed a Memorial to Congress in 1803. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. They can be found on the Marion Co, MISS census in 1816. In 1818, James and three of his brothers were charged with assault and battery. They were in Yazoo Co, Miss by 1830. They moved to Robertson County, Texas in 1834. He also had land in Refugio County, Texas.

Esther McGrew Hardin believes that the family went from Marion County to Yazoo County MS before the 1830 census. Lots of children in 1830. Moved to Texas in 1834. She heard a story that they saw the "stars fell on Alabama" shower on their move to Texas. James T. McGrew had a land grant in Refugio County near his brother William McGrew per the Land Maps of Texas showing original land grants.

Wynema McGrew stated that James Tate received a First Class Headright, No. 45, dated 5 Feb 1838 by the Board of land Commissioners of Robertson County, Texas. She also transcribed another certificate as reading:

Republic of Texas No. 90. This is to certify that James T. McGrew has appeared before us, the board of land commissioners for the county of Robertson, and proved according to the law that he arrived in this county October 1834 and that he is a married man and entitled to one Labor of Land, upone the condition of paying at the rate of $3.50 for every labor of irrigable land, $2.50 for every labor of temporal or arable land, and $1.20 for every labor of pasture land, which may be contained in the Survey secured to him by this Certificate. Given under our hand this 5th day of February 1838, Thomas Dillard, President, Thomas ? Dunn, L. Hart, Associate Commissioners.

Wynema also notes that in Robertson County in 1838, Jas. T. McGrew was shown on the tax roll with 75 cattle and no poll.

Esther McGrew Hardin of San Antonio had received a transcription of the Will of James Tate McGrew from Juanita Johnson of Clovis, New Mexico. It was transcribed as follows:

I, James Tate McGrew of the Republic of Texas, County of Robertson, do make and publish this my last will and testament revoking all former wills, which may have been made by me at any time previous. And the wordly (goods?) that it has pleased God to entrust (me??) I dispose of as follows. First I direct that all my debts be paid out of the first money that shall come into the hands of my executors from any portion of my Estate real or personal. Also I direct that all my stocks of hogs except six sows and pigs be sold on credit of six months at some time during the next winter (that?) my executors may think best. I also direct that my oldesy yoke of oxen and the largest steers of my stock together with a few milch cows amounting in all between twenty and thirty head be sold at some time in the Spring of 1840, on a credit of six months also that the corn growing upon my bottom plantation be cribed and sold some time during the coming fall season and I further direct that the proceeds of all such sales be (divided?) amongst my heirs as follows:

That WM. A. McGREW receive fifty dollars

That the heirs of GEORGE W. McGREW, MY SON DECEASED, receive fifty dollars

and the remainder of my sons and daughters and my wife to share and share equal of the remainder. And of the remaining unsold portion of my stock of cattle and the reserve of my stock of hogs together with my small black mare, my household and kitchen furniture I give and bequeth unto my wife. Also I further direct that all the real or lande of the Estate secured to me in this Republic or which may be secured to me be equally divided between the following heirs:

McGrew shall be of sufficient age to require the same for the purpose of education and then that it be appropriated for that purpose. The heirs or representatives of any of my children who shall have died between the time of my decease and such division or distribution of - to be entitled to such share or shares as their respective ancestors would have been entitled to were they then living and the share of my real and personal estate thus bequeathed to my wife to be in lieu of her dower at law and I hereby appoint my neighbor George W. Hill and my wife Elizabeth McGrew as executors of this my last will and testament and I also do hereby appoint my said wife Elizabeth McGrew Guardian for my minor heirs to take possession of their portions of my Estate and retain the same for their benefit to put the monied portion at and draw from the same as may be necessary to defray the expenses of educating them, and I further direct that my executors whenever they shall deem it expedient so to do and the prices of land shall justify the same sale for the use of my minor heirs their portions of the river lands belonging to my estate and (invest?) the proceeds as will be most advantageous but so that my heirs will be able to receive the money as they may arrive at years of maturity. According to THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW, Giles McGrew signed a Memorial to Congress in 1803. He was on the 1805 tax list of Washington Co, Mississippi. He married Nancy Dickerson, born 1796 in Georgia. The story was told that they were on their way to Texas and stopped in LA to make a corn crop before going further, and decided to stay.

Wynema McGrew states that he was in Ouachita Parish, LA by the 1820 census, and many of his descendants still live around Monroe, Louisiana. In 1820, Giles and Nancy were between the age of 26 and 44, and had four sons and one daughter under the age of 10. In 1830, three sons were counted, ranging in age between one day to 15 years, and five daughters were enumerated, ranging in age from 5 to 20. In 1840, the family had at home two sons under the age of 10, and four daughters whose age ranged from 5 to 20. According to a descendant, Giles and Nancy had 12 children in total, four sons and eight daughters. Ten have been identified by name.

Esther McGrew Hardin of San Antonio noted that Giles was also known as Joiles or Joel, and was the same Joel McGrew who married Nancy Dickerson Aug 27, 1811 in Amite County, Mississippi.

Per Copiah County MS marriage records, John McGrew was a surity for J.M. Rowan and Mrs. Martha Lawhan, 2 Oct 1842, so this places the family of John McGrew in Copiah Co. It was probabaly his son, however, as he was deceased by 1836.

Was in DeClouets Regiment during the War of 1812, and was in the Battle of New Orleans, along with his twin brother William.

Per Nancy's pension application, he died in Covington, St. Tammany Parish, LA. Their is also a Covington Co, Mississippi where the family once lived. This could cause confusion in the records.

Copiah Co, MS, William McGrue was a bondsman for John J. Holliday and Mary A. Ainsworth, 8 Dec 1825. Also, a daughter of Levin Hainsworth married Col. William McGrew about 1802, any connection?

Veteran of the War of 1812 (DeClouets Regiment), drafted in E. Feliciana, LA in Sept 1814, fought in the battle of New Orleans Discharged in New Orleans in Feb 1815. At the time he enlisted, Olivia's statement describes her husband as "5 feet, 10 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, occupation farmer"

Purchased land in Marion Co, MS 29 Jan 1816, 31 Oct 1818, and on 25 Sep 1819, he registered a brand.

Per the book REFUGIO by Herbart Huson, as extracted by Esther McGrew Hardin: "Colonel William McGrew and family moved to Refugio County in the later part of 1851, or prior to 25 January 1852. He acquired the holdings of Capt. Alfred S. Thurmond (his future son-in-law) at Mesquite Landing and operated a large planation house there. He was, perhaps, the largest slave-owner in the county and brought his negroes with him. His children were Dr. William P. McGrew, John McGrew, James McGrew, Henry McGrew, Robert McGrew, who married Alia (Alice per census), daughter of Thomas Marshall Duke, Julia McGrew, who was the wife of Capt. Alfred Sturgis Thurmond, and Sarah McGrew, wife of William Andrews, an early citizen of Refugio County. Andrews later moved to Clinton." Thomas Marshall Duke was one of the "old 300," the the settlers originally granted land by Stephen F. Austin.

He is listed as a slave holder on the 1860 Refugio, Texas census.

Son James McGrew died intestate in Austin, TX in 1912 at the Texas Confederate home. The settlement of his estate shows the names of the children of all his brothers and sisters.

His war pension application was signed by W.C. Terry, M.J. Terry, and A.S. Thurmond, J.P Refugio County (Husband of Julia)

Later Olivia is living with R.A. Upton (Sheriff of Aransas Co.?)

She further notes that on 3 Oct 1833 (after the death of Zadoc) Ann was made guardian of three sons, John, Turner, and William. She was listed as head of household in the 1840 Sumter County, Alabama census. The family included one female between the age of 30 and 40, one male between the age of 20 and 30, one mail between 15 and 20, two males betwen the age of 5 and 10, and one female less than five years old.

McGrew also states that John, Turner and William are not found on the 1850 census enumerations for Alabama, Mississippi or Georgia.

Per the book THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW and Alley Moody of Natchez, Mississippi, James and his wife, Betsy Lott were married in 1835 in Marion County, MS. They moved to Sabine Co, TX in the mid 1840's with his family, but moved back to Perry Co, MS by 1850. On the 1860 census, Jame's widowed mother, Elizabeth (Blackburn) McGrew, was living with them. He was a Civil War veteran. After the War, they moved to Covington Co, MS and then to Mobile, AL. He was in the produce business. They had 8 children. Betsy died on 22 Nov 1880, and was buried in the Wainwright Lot of the Montgomery cemetery in Mobile. He returned to Covington, MS, to lived with his son Leonard, and died prior to 1891. He is buried in the Old Williamsburg cemetery west of Collins, Covington Co, MS.

His middle name has been shown as both Alexander and as Harrison by different sources. On census records, he was listed simply as James.

James A. McGrew was a resident of Mobile, Alabama, living on Spring Hill Road between Broad and Pine in 1875, as per the 1875 City Directory

Could this be the John McGrue in Capt. Cameron's company in 1841? "J. McGrue pvt. enlisted in Capt. Ewen Cameron's Company in Texas. From ATTACK AND COUNTER ATTACK THE TEXAS MEXICO FRONTIER 1842 by Joseph Milton Nance p.630.

Per H. Huson's book "Refugio" Capt. Cameron, and many of the men in his company were taken prisoner and marched to Mexico City. Of the 170 men captured, it was decreed 1 in 10 were to be shot. The men were forced to draw beans, and the 17 men who drew black were the ones shot. Capt. Cameron was so hated that he was shot anyway.

On the 1850 census, he is shown as the head of the household, after his father had died the previous year. Wynema McGrew quoted Texas General Land Office records in the possession of Dr. Johnie L. Reeves "on the 17th day of May 1856, in Sabine County Texas, John G. McGrew, administrator of the Estate of Gabriel Blackburn, gave affidavit that the Headright Certificate for 1280 acres had been lost or destroyed."

He may have also received a land grant in Shelby county, above Sabine, in the 1840s (tax roll records).

Ferdinand was a Blackburn family name.

He enlisted with his brother, John Gabriel in the Mexican war, in Milam, Sabine County, Texas as privates in Company K. This was on 25 June 1846. He was said to have been killed on 24 August 1846, in Camargo, Mexico.

Wynema McGrew noted that she appears to have married first an Odam/Odom. Ester McGrew Hardin speculated that Adaline was visiting some MEANS relatives in DeWitt County and met the Odams who lived nearby.

Bettye Bragg Wagstaff informed me that Mary Fisher mentioned a possible connection between the Odom Family and the Blackburn/McGrew family. On the LDS family group sheet, an Odom is listed as a possible husband of Adeline McGrew. In Sabine County in 1850, the Odom family lived nearby both the John and Harriet (McGrew) Partin family and the family of of John Wooldridge Allen and Caroline (McGrew??) Allen. In 1835, there is an Odom living near the William Means family (whom according to Blanche Toole, was the first sherriff of Sabine County). William Addison Means was married to Francis Amelia Blackburn, the sister of Elizabeth Blackburn McGrew. He was also a member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas in both 1843 and 1845 from DeWitt County.

The Means family moved from Sabine to DeWitt County, taking along with Frances (Tyner) Blackburn, who died in Gonzalez, TX ca. 1853. The Odom families do not appear again on the Sabine County census after 1850.

Hardin also found a later marriage record, showing that on 3 Sept 1870 in Robertson County, Texas, Adaline married Miles KELLY. Hardin may be conflating two different families, however. A very large Miles and Adeline Kelly family can be found in Robertson county on the 1880 federal census. However, the Adeline who was enumerated with Miles Kelly in 1880 was younger (born ca 1845 versus 1838), born in Georgia vs. Mississippi, and Mulatto versus White.

Everette McGrew instead puts his date of birth ca 1822. However, as he served in the Mexican War in 1836, he was likely the eldest born of the children of James Tate and his wife Elizabeth. Hardin enlisted on 12 Mar 1838 in Robertston County as a private under Captain N. Doyle, Volunteer Rangers. He was discharged 10 Jun 1839. William and Flood McGrew, his brothers, also enlisted and were discharged at the same time.

Robert Lee McGrew of Pearland, TX also indicated that James Tate McGrew and his wife Elizabeth had a son named Hardin R. McGrew, but he is not mentioned in James Tate McGrew's will. The book THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW indicates he died before his father drew up his will.

Veteren of the Mexican War of 1836, paid a land grant in Robertson Co, TX for 1476 acres. He apparently died around 1839/1840, before his father's will was made, but he was on the 1840 tax list. He left his estate to his mother, Elizabeth, and she and two sons sold the headright to Reuban Anderson on 20 May 1850 for $20,000. (From THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW)

Served in the Texas Army during the revolution of 1836. Also a Texas Ranger, and said to have been killed during an attempt to save 12 year Cynthia Ann Parker when she was captured by the Comanches.

Per the book THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW he joined the Robertson Co Rangers to help protect against the Indians. The Indians attacked Ft. Marlin on January 16, 1839 and G. W. along with his brothers, Wm A and a brother in law David Armstrong Barton, went to help drive the Indians away. Jackson Powers had his horse shot from under him, so G.W. took him up behind him on his little pony. Powers brother saw this and came and took his brother up with him on a larger horse. The Indians caught up with G.W., the Powers, and David Barton, and killed G.W. and Barton. The Powers got away. G.W. and Elizabeth had a daughter born after his death. The widowed Elizabeth next married James B. Ware. She later married John Lynd. She probably died shortly after 1850, as Wm. Moss was guardian of her children.

Wynema McGrew writes that George W. McGrew posthumously received Bounty Warrant 161 for 320 acres on 16 Dec 1846 for service from 29 Apr to 29 July 1839. In October1848, 320 acres in Freestone County were presented to him (or presumably his heirs as he died in 1839).

George married Elizabeth Moss in 1838 in County of Robertson, Republic of Texas. Elizabeth was born about 1823 in Missouri; died before 1853. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

According to Esther McGrew Hardin, William P McGrew was in Copiah County, Mississippi in 1850, with two sons, with wife M. McGrew and Burrell Moody, 18, living with him. In view of this, and because Dr. William's son John H. named a son John Moody McGrew, Esther believes that the first wife of Dr. McGrew was a Moody. Nancy Lea Wilson Wright of Shreveport says that William McGrew's first wife was Marcina Moody Welch.

He was listed as a merchant and planter in 1850. He must have become a doctor sometime before he moved to Refugio prior to 1860.

Dr McGrew was one of the largest slaveholders in Refugio in the mid-1850s. Esther McGrew Hardin cites Hobart Huson, in his history REFUGIO, as noting these slaveholders were mainly planters and stock-farmers living along the San Antonio and Guadalupe Rivers, most whom brought their slaves with them. They were also, not surprisingly, some of the most active and leading secessionists in the county. Dr. William P. McGrew was chief justice during the period of 1862 to the end of the war. His court "took prompt and effective measures to guard against slave uprisings." They appointed patrols over the entire county, along with working to help support the families of the men who had gone to war.

The Refugio list of Home Guard units included: Thomas M. Duke, Thomas M. Duke, Jr.; Henry McGrew; James McGrew; John McGrew; Dr. William P. McGrew; Thomas McGuill; Alfred S. Thurmond.

After the end of the war, Dr. and Mrs. McGrew were said to have owned the original Mission Hotel, at the northwest corner of Alamo and Purisiama.

Wynema McGrew adds that he was also Mayor of Refugio and a Methodist preacher. She shows that he died ca 1884 in Beeville, Texas.

Per "The Southern McGrews Grew", he was a Civil War veteran and was captured, but as it was near the end of the war, he was not held long. He lived in Covington Co, MS until the late 1870's, but had to leave after he and a group of men were involved in the murder of Luke Broom. When the law came to arrest him, he asked if he could first feed his oxen, and they consented. He escaped. His brother, Leonard, loaded the family up and took them to Louisiana and they hid out near Baton Rogue. They had 11 children, and he died on 19 December 1886, and was buried in Knox cemetery, The Plains, East Feliciana Parish, LA. His wife died of pneumonia at the home of her son, Robert, on 10 November, 1895 and was buried near Alexander.

Wynema McGrew writes that he enlisted in the Confederate State Army on either 10 Feb 1862 at Williamsburg, Covington County, Mississippi or 1 Feb 1862 at Handsboro, Harrison County, Mississippi. He was a sergeant in Company B, Fourth Cavalry under Capt. Norman. He was paroled in Gainsville, Alabama on 12 May 1865.

Wynema McGrew writes that she married second Dock Hall. In the 1870 Covington County, MS census, her Lott children were listed in the home of D. G. and Mary Ann Hall. On the 1880 census, the children were listed by the last name Hall, not Lott, with the family residing in Smith County, MS. In Smith County, in 1900, a Glenions Hall can be found, without wife Mary Ann or any of the children enumerated in 1900, but with seven younger Hall children, all born after 1880.

Notes:

Wynema McGrew notes that Leonard was not easy to get along with, and had been asked by neighbors to move. He was rumored to have killed men, outside of combat, during the Civil War. Bruce Aultman, an attorney living in the Victory community in Lamar County suggested that Leonard was a Jayhawk (Union sympathizer) during the Civil War. He did serve in the Confederate Army, however, enlisting in Capt. H R McLaurin's Company (Co F, 27th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry) on 26 Aug 1861, the same day R. L. McGrew enlisted. He was discharged in Rome, Georgia on 11 Apr 1863 due to wounds to his hip and knee while at Shelbyville, Tennessee. He later served in Company E, 3rd Battalion, Mississippi Reserve Calvary from which he was paroled on May 16, 1865. He was a freemason and baptist for most of his life, but converted to Catholicism late in life, due to his many transgressions and the influence of his eldest daughter, Susanna, who had converted when she married, and Leonard was buried in the Catholic portion of the Williamsburg Cemetery. The cemetery name, per Find A Grave, was the Saint James Catholic Cemetery in Bassfield, Mississippi.

Her middle initial is shown sometimes as C and sometimes as K. It is not known what her actual middle name was.

Nina Fuller always said that her grandmother, Jane (Allen) Fullen was "half Indian." It has not been proved if this is true, or merely a legend. The name ALLEN appears to be of common use among the Cherokees, and perhaps this is where either the actual Indian blood, or legend of Indian blood, came from. The mtDNA of a child of Nina Fuller, a direct female descendant of Jane, was classified as H. This is the most common mtDNA in Europe, and not one associated with Native American lineage. If Jane was part Indian, it was through her father's family, and not in her direct maternal line.

There is a photo of Jane Fullen, presumably taken shortly before her death in 1926, in a black silk bonnet. This bonnet was given by Jane to her granddaughter Nina (Fuller) McLemore. Nina's daughter, Evon Tisdale gave the bonnet to Melinda (McLemore) Strong.

*Jane is the daughter of J.W. Allen by wife Caroline. Jane was born in December 1850, and the 1850 census was taken in October 1850. Therefore, Caroline would have been between 6 and 7 months pregnant at the time of the census. The 1860 census was taken in June, before Jane had reached her 10th birthday.

#The mother of Susan Allen is not known. It does not seem likely that she is the daughter of John's second wife, Margaret Harvey Allen, who had moved back home with their one year old daughter, Mary Allen. Did John have a daughter by a woman other than his then wife, perhaps leading to their separation? Or is Susan perhaps a niece or other family member? Or are Mary/Susan the same child, listed in both households?

His former wife, Margaret, and his daughter Mary are living in another household in 1860, as follows:

He died of a bad heart and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Yoakum, Texas. He and Frances and their three children were living with his parents at the time of the 1880 census.

Wynema McGrew wrote that Lorenzo Dow Jr had bene sentenced to 10 years in prison for a murder. He had worked as a bar tendger during the gold rush in Alaska and killed a man in a fight in Klondike. He served 14 months of his sentence in Alaska, being returned to Texas around 1899 or 1900.

His Texas death certificate indicates he was married and a resident of Lavaca. He died at the San Antonio State hospital, and his occupation was shown as carpenter. His body was returned to Yoakum for burial.

At the time of the 1860 census, he was living with his parents in Precint 2 of Robertson County, Texas, listed as 2 and born in Texas. In 1880, he was listed as a laborer, age 22, born in Texas. He was still in Roberston County, Texas, in the home of E. D. and Emily Pruitt.

Per THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW she was mentioned in her grandfather's will (James Tate McGrew). The land given to her was to be sold about the time she would mature, and the proceeds were to be used for her education, but her mother and her second husband sold the land in 1844. Mary Jane married John P. Gibson Maddox, and they petitioned for control of her mother's estate, since the land was originally Washington's (her father's), but the outcome is unknown. She and her husband helped raise the children of Mary June McGrew and Ben Maddox, after their deaths.

Based on both the number of years Allen and Mollie were married (14) and the fact that she states she is the mother of five living children (presumably Gertie, Flood, Mattie, Virginia and Alphonso), it would appear that Clabie is Allen's son from a previous marriage. Additionally, in 1910, she is shown of the mother of six living children, presumably Gertie, Flood, Mattie, Virginia, Alfonso and Wilbur.

On 12 July 1929, Bette Rawls wrote "My father [James Thomas McGrew] died when I was quite young and the others were killed and scattered by Indians, so I know very little about them not even my grandfathers name or where he came from--only that they were of Scotch-Irish descent. They were Pioneer Texans and went through all the hardships and privations that the words imply, first settling in Roberston County later moving to Limestone County. I make my home with my daughter, Mrs. B. C. Dunn." (From Wynema McGrew's book. p. 351).

Wynema McGrew states that a first cousin of Elizabeth's reported she was returned to Tennessee to be raised by her paternal grandparents. However, if this is true, it was not for long. On 5 May 1845, Elizabeth McGrew, her maternal grandmother, applied to the Robertson County Probate Court for guardianship of Elizabeth Jane Barton, minor, heir of David A. Barton and Samatha Barton, both deceased. Elizabeth was granted this guardianship, and she was living with her grandmother as of 1850.

Wynema indicated that Elizabeth Jane married Cleve R. Walters or Waters in Limestone County, Texas prior to 1860 where they can be found on that census. He was a farmer with real and personal property of $3,500 each. They were not found on the 1870 or 1880 censuses of Texas.

At the time of the 1870 federal census, 16 year old Sarah was living in the home of J O Maddox, age 46, and born in Georgia. Other members of that household were Myra, 26 F W born in Mississippi, Pinkney 5 F, Thomas 3 M, and Joseph 2 M. The younger household members were born in Texas, as was Sarah. As Sarah was the last member listed in the household (as opposed to be listed chronologically with the other minors in the home) it appears that she was likely not a child of J. P. Maddox, but likely related in some other fashion as they shared the same last name.

Mrs. Sarah Cassels, wife of Mr. J.W.Cassels, died on Saturday April 11, 1885 at her home on Perdido, this county, of pneumonia. The relatives have our sincere sympathy in their sore affliction.

Sarah was known to her family and friends as Sade. Information was taken from papers that Juanita Johnson had worked on. She got her information from Bible records, census 1850, legal records and other research.

Per "The Southern McGrews Grew" he enlisted in Monroe, LA on 14 April 1862 for the Civil War. He was a prisoner captured and paroled in Vicksburg MS and finally paroled on 9 June 1865 in Monroe, LA. He married Martha Amanda Bryan. They had six children. Wynema McGrew notes that he was a private in Company K, 31 Louisiana Infantry. His residence was listed as Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. According to the family group record prepared by Ritter, James Calvin filed for homestead grant, and he was legally granted 160 acres in Lapine, Louisiana. On the 1910 census, J. C. an M. A. McGrew reported that they had been married 38 years, and had six total children, five still living. Joan and Lureca were still at home, and granddaughters Rosa McGrew and Ulah Tolbird were also listed in the home.

In Dec. 1910, he deeded this property to John McGrew, a son of William L. McGrew, who was a son of George Washington McGrew. As of the 1910 census, Columbus G. and Lisabeth J. had been married 28 years and had three children, two of whom were living. [The number and status of their children agrees to the 1900 census.] Only Thomas E. was still at home. Columbus was a farmer and owned his farm free of mortgage and Thomas was listed as a farm laborer.

Addie was born in Louisiana in 1851 but had moved to Texas with her family by 1854-1856.

In 1873 she married John Philip Walker, son of Philip and Sarah Elizabeth Walker. They were married in Guadalupe County, but soon moved to Luling (1874) so that John P could join his brother James K. Walker in establishing the Walker Brothers mercantile enterprise. Addie and John Philip had two sons before she died at age 28.

From Luling Signal, Jan 1, 1880, Vol II #51: "We regret the death of Mrs. J.P. Walker, which occurred at her home in this city last Tuesday evening." This would put her death date as Dec. 1879.

After Addie's death, John Philip and the two boys lived with the Fenner family in Luling, Texas. In 1881, John Philip Walker married Josephine C. Fenner, Addie's sister. John Philip and Josephine C. Walker had four children. They named one of their daughters after Addie. John Philip and Josephine C. are buried in Luling City Cemetery.

Addie is buried near her uncle, Patrick Henry Walker, in Prairie Lea Public Cemetery. In the 1968 inventory of the cemetery there were four unmarked graves (listed as board markers) on one side of Addie and one unmarked grave on her other side. The markers are no longer visible.

Josephine's sister, Addie, died in 1879. Addie's husband, John P. Walker and their three young boys came to live with the Fenner family in Luling, Texas.

Children names were obtained from both census records and a letter from Clara Manning, a descendant of Katherine McGrew McGuill to Esther McGrew Hardin. The McGrew's lived in Blanconia, just barely across the Refugio county line in Bee County. It was distinguished in the early days as being the headquarters of Sallie Scull, a notorious woman cattle operator and gunwoman.

John McGrew was killed in a gunfight in front of a saloon in Refugio in 1876. According to Hobart Huson's book "Refugio":

"Charles Berkowitz moved to Refugio and founded the famous "Bull's Head Saloon" at the southwest intersection of Alamo and Yabacion streets. It also had a gambling parlor associated with it. ..(perhaps the most noted gunfight) between John McGrew and Luke Porter. There was some sort of disagreement between the two men, and bullets began to spatter all over the place. The customers rushed to cover leaving a clear field to the principals. Present was a Mexican gambler, who with more courage than discretion tried to stop the melee. He stepped behind McGrew at the instant that a bullet from Porter's gund plowed through McGrew's body. The same bullet tore through the Mexican gambler's body and killed him." The footnote to this story cites W.L. Rea's "Memoirs."

His wife Julia Hart, whose parents were early settlers in the Irish Colony in nearby San Patricio, Texas.

Hathorn in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, and his nearest relative was his wife, Mrs. Anna Jane McGrew of Seminary, Mississippi. He was described as short and slender, with brown eyes and dark hair, and missing his right eye.

At the time of the 1930 Federal census, he was listed as a boarder, age 57 and widowed, in the home of E. L. and Ida COUTLER in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. His occupation was shown as "farmer."

According to Wyneman McGrew, Laura had a tumultous life, and was married at least twice. She had several children, and some of them died young. One daughter, Neva (later called Keary) Carr, was raised by her ex-husband, Charlie Carr and her younger sister, Fannie. Laura spent the last 30 years of her life at the Mississippi State Hospital, and died of Dementia Praecox.

Per "The Southern McGrews Grew", Leonard was shot by Levi Smith, who suspected that Leonard and his wife were having an affair. He shot him at church one Sunday. After his death, his wife Ester moved back to Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi. Five of their sons joined the Seabees and roamed all over the country.

On the 1910 census, Leonard and Ester were living in Covington County, with four sons, Carrol (b. ca 1903), Bradford (b. ca 1906), Lawrence (b. ca 1908), and Latson (age nine months).The same family group can be found in Covington in 1920, however Latson was instead listed as Curtis. Two daughters were in the home, Iva J. (born ca 1912) and Mamie (age five months). In 1930, the widowed Ester was in Ellisville, Mississippi, with only Curtis and Mamie still living at home.

Wynema McGrew wrote "When S. D. completed his secondary education, he stayed home, took care of his mother until her death in 1914, and farmed until he joined the army during World War I. After his discharge he married Mamie Davis, his first wife, and resumed farming, knowing he did not want it to be his life's work. Soon thereafter, he took advantage of the educational opportunities offered to veterans of World War I, entering Mississippi A&M (now MSU)....upon graduation he taught and/or was superintendent of several schools in south Mississippi until his retirement. He and Mamie had no children....(later) he earned his master's degree at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa."

Wynema McGrew writes that his parents, William and Sarah, both died of tuberculosis. The children were put in the Protestant Orphanage and Asylum after their death. Although William was no longer living in the orphanage as of the 1900 census, both of his younger sisters were still residents, listed as orphans, as of the 1900 census.

Wynema McGrew writes that he married Gertrude Forbes on 15 Feb 1909 in Mobile, Alabama. She was the daughter of William Forbes who was born in St. Andrews, Scotland.
