1782 - Yes, date unknown
Generation: 1
1. | Juan "John" Ignacio Maximillian was born in Jul 1782 in Louisiana; and died. Notes:
Kathy Casagranda, in her annotated 1850 census of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, shows him as a son of Maximillian ARZE and Francesa LARENARDIERE.
William Scott, on his "Bill's Roots II" tree posted on RootWeb's WorldConnect Project in August, 2004, shows that Juan/John's parents were Juan DeARZE, born ca 1762 in Algerzia, Spain and Francesca RENAUDIERE, a daughter of Charles RENAUDIERE and Marie Jeanne Del Rio LA RIVIERE of Natchitoches, Louisiana. He shows Juan as being born July 4, 1782 in Natchitoches, and dying in July 1856 in Shelby County, Texas. This date of death is not correct, as Juan and Claire can still be found in Sabine Parish, LA at the time of the 1860 Federal census (unless the census was recorded incorrectly versus that date of death).
Bill's tree can be found here:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=:2583124
Juan/John Maximillian's first wife, and mother of his children, is usually shown by his descendants as Anastacia Sims/Simms/Simes. William Scott shows her as Anastacia Sims, a daughter of Richard Sims and Maria Conception Perez, and that she was born ca 1793 in San Augustine and died ca 1827 in Sabine County. An article in the November 15, 1972 Beaumont Enterprise, titled "Tiny Geneva To Take a Place in History" indicates that her maiden name of John Sr.'s wife may have instead been "Larendaudiere (French)...being related to his mother."
He later married a younger woman named Claire, born ca 1810-1812 in Louisiana (census records from 1835, 1850 and 1860). Death date shown as circa 1866 by some.
At the time of the 1835 Sabine District, Texas census, John and his sons were living with his young wife, Clarie, and eight "servants" (slaves), ranging in age from 51 to 1 years of age. (Schluter, 1835 Census, p15).
Said to have participated in the Battle of Nacogdoches on 2 August 1832, "Armed with nothing more than shotguns and various types of hunting weapons, the national militia of Nacogdoches, aided by militias from Ayres, Teneha, Sabine, Bevil, Settlement, and San Augustine, fired the opening guns of the Texas Revolution during the Battle of Nacogdoches on August 2, 1832. Colonel Jose de las Piedras commanded his 300 member Mexican garrison from the Old Red House situated on this site. Piedras lost 47 men, with 40-60 wounded. Victory at the Battle of Nacogdoches enabled people of Texas to organize the Texas Revolution without Mexican military intervention." His name, John Maxmillian, is one of 80 inscribed on the Historical Marker commerating this battle. There were 253 total participants, most of whose identities have been lost. Some descendants show that it was his namesake son, and not John Sr., who actually fought in the battle and is memoralized.
Shown on the 1835 census as having three son, John, Joseph and Antonio. Subsequent census records can be found for John and Joseph, but not for Antonio. However, an
A. Maximillian is listed on the "Louisiana, Civil War Service Records of Confederate Soldiers, 1861-1865", in the Twenty-sixth Infantry (Event Year 1862. Pub. # M320, Film #338).
John Maximillian Sr was also shown by William Scott to be the father of daughter Marie Louisa, born Feb 1816, and who married Donald McDonald before 1830.
John was said to have "lived about a mile from the Camino Real and his uncle Pefermo reportedly constructed the Chabana Road, which led to the Sabine River. John owned a ranch, which he sold to Mathew Earl. By 1836, John sold all he owned in Texas to Willis H. Landrum for $5,000 and moved to the Bayou Scie area of Sabine Parish. The article about Geneva, referenced above, shows that sale was actually to W. C. Duffield, who later sold it the Walt and Prudence Strother, and this little Spanish Pueblo became known as Geneva. It appears that John and Clara are listed inthe 1860 census for the Parish. This surname again went through a change from 1850 to 1860. After the 1850 census the surname for this family is listed as Maxey. Both cemetery and census records are found with this change." (Kathy Casagranda, Annotated Sabine Parish 1850 Census, 70).
In a biography, written by Madge Lois Tipton Strickland, and published in a Daughters of Republic of Texas publication instead indicated that "he was a native of Austria, but had been visiting his sister, Marie Antoinette, at Versailles, so came from France, and made his home with Juan Ignacio Pifermo at Labonilla Hacienda in Sabine County."

2. | John "Juan" Maximillian, Jr. (1.Juan1) was born about 1813 in Texas; and died. Notes:
William Scott and some others show his middle name as Nepucimo.
The History of Sabine Parish, Louisiana (author John Belisle, The Sabine Banner Press, 1912) states that "in 1860 the white population of Sabine Parish numbers about four thousand, and there were less than two thousand slaves. There were few really wealthy people in the parish, and many owned not more than one of two slaves." The owners of six or more in 1861 included John Maximillian.

Madge Lois Tipton Strickland, in a self published article published in a DRT heritage book, stated that it was John Maximillian Jr, and not his father for whom he was named, that was a participant in the Battle of Nacogdoches in 1832.

16. | Mary Maximillian (3.Joseph2, 1.Juan1) was born about 1846 in Louisiana; and died. Notes:
Kathy Casagranda notes that presumed sisters, Mary and Nancy Maximillian, were living in the home of their Aunt and Uncle, Margaret (nee Maximillian) and William Theodore Alford, at the time of the 1860 Sabine Parish census. This appears to be due to the temporary seperation of their parents, Joseph and Martha Maximillian.
Joseph and Martha had a four year old daughter, Mary, living with them at the time of the 1850 census. She was shown as born in Louisiana. In the Alford home in 1860, she was shown as 15 year old Mary Maximillian, born in Texas.
William Scott shows that she married John Teel OLIVER, and that they were the parents of Mary and Joseph, born born before 1870 in Sabine Parish.
|
17. | Nancy Maxey (3.Joseph2, 1.Juan1) was born about 1848 in Texas; died before 1879.
She believes this is the same Nancy Maximillian/Maxey who married Henry Campbell in 1868 and then who died circa 1876-1879 after her son George was born and before Henry remarried. Nancy is NOT listed with Joseph and Martha at the time of the 1850 census, however, although the older Mary is shown. Nancy may have been left off inadvertantly, been born late in 1850 versus being born 1847-1848, or be the daughter of another Maximillian/Maxey family entirely. She is being attributed to Joseph and Martha Maximillian by Casagranda by the process of elimination, and through her being enumerated with Mary in 1860, who is known to be the daughter of Joseph and Martha.
Nancy married Henry Campbell on 16 Jul 1868 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. Henry (son of W. R. Campbell and Elizabeth "Eliza" ???) was born on 8 Sep 1835 in Missouri; died on 28 Sep 1915 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana; was buried in Parrott-Quirk Cemetery, Sabine Parish, Louisiana. Hessie Maxey Buried
The unfortunate young woman who died in the Hospital Tuesday morning from the effects of cocaine was given a Christian burial yesterday afternoon. Preceding the interment, which was held in Waring's parlor, in the presence of the father and sister and other relatives of the deceased and several friends. The remarks of Rev. Dr. Smith of the Presbyterian church were sonifully impressive and moved to tears those who heard him. His words were fortifying with the hopeful inspiration drawn from the example of a repentant Magdalen. In paying this last tribute to the deceased, the relatives did all that they could for the frail victim who was dear to them. In this death and burial is a moral which is stronger than a written or spoken sermon.

SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral services celebrating the life of Lola Mae Walker, 93, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2010 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Bro. Ed Gonzales and Bro. Skip Noble. Interment will follow in Aimwell Cemetery in Aimwell, LA. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the funeral home.
Lola was born on March 25, 1917 in the Vines Chapel Community between Zwolle and Many, LA to Mr. and Mrs. John W. Maxey who have preceded her in death. She passed away in Shreveport on August 27, 2010. Also preceding her are her daughter, Dorothy Lafitte of Shreveport, LA; her sister, Gladys Coldwell of Port Arthur, TX; her late husband, Elmer H. Woodle and sister, Laura Woodle of Many, LA.
Lola attended and graduated Aliance School. She grew up and lived around Many and Zwolle before she moved to Shreveport. After she was married to her late husband, Elmer, she lived in Shreveport ever since.
Lola was a devoted, gracious, loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was retired from the W.F. Woolworth Co. in Shreveport. She organized the reunions of the retired Woolworth's employees and brought together old friends and co-workers for fond memories and fellowship.
Lola loved to quilt, crochet, cook, tend her flowers and "run the roads" especially visit the Smokey Mountains and her family and friends out of town.
She was a long time member of the Mansfield Road Baptist Church, which she attended "every time the door was open" as long as she was able. Her favorite expression was "I sure do love this church and I'll be here till I die", and she was. Without saying it she was a true Christian lady and loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all her heart and soul.
Her passing has left a void in the lives of us who knew and loved her, but those of us who know the Lord Jesus are confident that one day, we'll all be reunited again in a place where death, disease and sin no longer exist. Only Love. "O Death where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? (1 Cor. 15:55.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, James L "Jim" Walker of Shreveport; one son, Johnny W. Woodle and wife, Wanda of Keatchie, LA; one sister, Oleta M. Thornton of Shreveport; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers will be Huey Wyatt, Bud Lowery, Bill Cox, Joe Paul Maxey, Shelton Havard, Mark Gribon, and Lance Gribon.
To some, the caring of someone with Alzheimer's Disease might be a burden, but to her husband, it became an honor and privilege to minister to and serve someone he cared so deeply for. "In sickness and in health so long as we both shall live".
Sincere thanks go to the caring staff of AGAPE Hospice, especially Elaine, Lisa, Skip, Donna and Vita, thank you dear friends. To special friends, Peggy and Thomas Baldwin, Dee and everyone who visited and brought food, your love and support throughout this time, we give eternal thanks and God bless you.
