    Milligan

    Mary Ella Stejskal Soukup, daughter of Frank and Anna (Stastny) Stejskal, was born on a farm west of Wilber, on May 21, 1894, and passed away at the Wilber Nursing Home on December 20, 1988, at the age of 94 years, 7 months.

    When she was a child, the family moved to a farm near Tobias and later to the Ohiowa area where she attended Golden Rod School District 42.

    Upon completion of her school, she took a course in Terry dressmaking and sewing at Milligan, graduating as a fine seamstress in September of 1911. She followed this occupation along with housekeeping for others.

    As a pastime she enjoyed Czech music and also liked to play the organ, piano and button accordian. On her 90th birthday she played a few selections on the piano.

    On December 21, 1915, she was united in marriage to Harry Soukup at Geneva by Judge Fulton. They made their home on the farm west of Milligan. Their family grew to include four children, Arnold, Elmer, Roy and Rubye, as well as a nephew, Louis Most, who came to join the family in 1927.

    Mary and Harry were active in the ZCJB Lodge Svatopluk 76. For many years she worked at the Milligan auditorium during the popular dance period in the 1930's and 1940's.

    She prided herself for being a member of the American Legion Auxillary, having had all three sons in the service.

    In 1956 she and her husband retired from the farm and moved to Milligan. On December 21, 1965, they had the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding anniversay.

    In 1974 they moved to Wilber to be near their daughter Rubye. On December 21, 1975, they celebrated 60 years of wedded life.

    On August 11, 1981, she entered the Wilber Nursing Home where she spent many hours with one of her favorite pastimes of crocheting.

    Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harry, son, Elmer; daughter in law Mary Anne, granddaughter, nancy, brothers Adolph, Anton, Frank J, and Louis; sister, Antonie; and a brother and sister in infancy.

    She is survived by sons, Arnold H and Ray and wife Betty Soukup, daughter, Rubye and husband Ed Prokop; one sister, Anna Chaney; six grandchildren, 11 great-great granchildren, nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services were conducted from Farmer-Kotas Funeral Chapel on December 23, with the Rev. Michael McDonald officiating.

    Amy Sluka accompanied Blanche Capek and Dorothy Skrivanek, who sang "God be with You Til We Meet Again" and "Kardy Nese Svuj Kriz" in Czech.

    Pallbearers were John Soukup, Rob Prokop, Jay Jorgens, Tim Hester, Arnold Capek and Jim J. Kotas.

    Interment was in the Bohemian National Cemetery, Milligan.

    Obituary

    Helen Rose Kottas, youngest daughter of the late Anton and Mary Nadherny Stejskal was born near Tobias on January 4, 1924. She passed away on March 11, 2020 at Ridgewood Care Center in Seward, Ne.

    Helen grew to womanhood in the Milligan vicinity living on a farm southwest of town. She attended Milligan Public Grade School and High School graduating in 1941 as valedictorian of her class. Following graduation, she taught rural schools for two years.

    On October 27, 1942 she married William J. Kottas in Hawthorne, California. This union was blessed with four children: Sharon, Marylin, Janice and Douglas. During her younger years, Helen helped part time in their grocery store in Tobias. She was very active in community and civic affairs volunteering her time. She was instrumental in organizing the Tobias Community Historical Society in 1968 where she served as President for over 27 years. She also assisted with the Girl Scout Troop, 4-H club and served as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. Her interests were in helping her children excel in their activities. She enjoyed history, sewing and all types of music. She and her husband enjoyed dancing to Big Band and Polka music.

    Helen believed in helping veterans and promoted Americanism. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary joining in 1946. She held many offices over the years including District 11 President and served as the Nebraska Department Legislative Chair and Nebraska Department Publicity Chair.

    Helen was very active with the Catholic Church. She held offices with the Parish Council of Catholic Women and served on the Crete Deanery Board. She volunteered for many Pro-Life events and was news reporter for Sacred Heart Church for many years. Other organizations she was active in were the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Military Order of Purple Heart Auxiliary, Extension Club, WFLA Lodge Krivoklot #79, Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers' Auxiliary, Saline County Retired Teachers, Saline County Music Choir and Saline County Museum Board.

    Helen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed having her grandchildren and great grandchildren come to visit. They all looked forward to eating her traditional Czech foods especially her apricot kolaches. Helen and Jimmie celebrated their 77th Wedding Anniversary on October 27, 2019. Helen was preceded in death by her parents Anton and Mary Stejskal, sister Mildred Tesar, brother in-law William Tesar, and nephew William E. Tesar.

    She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, William J. Kottas; children, Sharon (Allen) Brozovsky, Marylin (Albert) Ericksen, Janice (Mark) Schweer, Douglas (Dawn) Kottas, 14 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren. Visitation and greeting of friends will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete, NE followed by the Rosary at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2020 at Sacred Heart Church in Crete, NE. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in the Tobias Public Cemetery, Tobias, NE. Memorials in care of the family for St. Gianna Women's Homes and Catholic Women's Care Center in Lincoln, NE. Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete is in charge of arrangements.

    Arnold Harry Soukup, son of Harry and Mary (Stejskal) Soukup was born March 27, 1919 near Milligan. He passed away on June 22, 1998 in Lincoln, at the age of 79.

    He grew up on the farm with his parents and attended rural school and one year of high school in Geneva. After one year of school he had to stay home to help with the farming. He farmed until June 1944, when he was called to serve in the Army. he served in the European-African-Middle East Theater of operations during WW II. He was discharged in May, 1946.

    Upon returning from military service he continued farming with his parents.

    He was united in marriage to Maryanne Wanek on April 15, 1952. They farmed until the fall of 1959 when they moved to Milligan and Arnold took employment with the Farmers's Coop Company. He worked there until retirement in 1981. During this time he volunteered as a Fire Fighter. After Maryanne passed away on August 2, 1981, he moved to Lincoln.

    He was united in marriage to Tillie Engel on August 24, 1990. Tillie blessed him with a large step family that he enjoyed. He especially enjoyed the two great-grandsons that always gave him a helping hand.

    He was a member of the Friend United Church of Christ.

    Arnold and Tillie loved to travel to see relatives and to take bus tours to Czech functions. He was proud of his Czech heritage and especially enjoyed the music.

    He took great pride in his lawn and garden, always keeping things neat. Arnold was a member of the Milligan WFLA Lodge #3909, Nebraska Czechs of Lincoln, BPOE #3909 in Crete, a life-time member of VFW 7102 in Geneva, and a very active and proud member of the American Legion Post #240 in Milligan. He served as mayor of Milligan at one time.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Maryanne; parents, Harry and Mary Stejskal Soukup; brother, Elmer, and niece Nancy Soukup.

    He is survived by his wife, Tille, of Dorchester; stepson and spouse, Dennis and Tammy Engel of Altas, Oklahoma; stepdaughters and spouses, Darlene and David Rasplicka of Friend, Beverly and Jon Cawley of Seattle, Washington, Linda Hardin, Muscatine, Iowa; brother and sister in law Ray and Betty Soukup of Lincoln, sister, Rubye Prokup of Lincoln; sisters in law and brother in law, Rosemarie Hannon, Crete; Ella Vagrt, Paul, Idaho; Alvie and Clarence "Bud" Hoffman, Beaver Crossing; Joe Ladman, Dorchester; eight step grandchildren; two step great-grandsons; nieces and nephews.

    His memorial service was held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 27 at the Friend United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Robert Brauninger officiating. The flag presentation ceremony was conducted on Monday, June 29, at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.

    The family suggested that memorials be given to the American Legion Post #240, Milligan, or the Dorchester Volunteer Rescue Squad.

    Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

    Elmer Louis Soukup, son of Harry and Mary (Stejskal) Soukup, was born May 1, 1921, near Milligan. He passed away December 15,1982, in Lincoln.

    He grew up with his parents on the farm and attended school at Milligan after which he took up the auto mechanic trade at Bors Ford Motor Company learning the trade by apprenticeship.

    In August 1942 he enlisted inthe U.S. Army Ordinance Department. After training in the U.S. and Canada he was sent overseas to the European Theatre of Operations being involved in the D-Day operations June 6, 1944. He was discharged October 19, 1945, serving a total of three years and two months.

    Elmer was a member of Amercan Legion H.S.S.K. Post 240 at Milligan, The Geneva V.F.W. post and Svatopluk Z.C.B.J. Lodge76 at Milligan.

    After returning from military service he went back to his auto mechanic trade with his former employer Bors-Bulin Ford Motor Company in Milligan.

    On September 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to Jeanette (Grote) Messinger. To this union were born two children, Mary Kaye and John.

    In 1955 he secured employment at O'Shea Rogers Ford Motor Company after which he took over the operation of his own service station. For the past 23 years he was employed by the F.D. Wilson Auto Parts Company. He enjoyed his work and took pride in an occasional tinker on some of his client's cars.

    Elmer was an avid gardener and greatly enjoyed the company of his neighbors who had much respect for him.

    He also took great pride in his many hobbies and enjoyed listening to Czech music.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Soukup.

    Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Jeanette, daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kaye and Mike McDonald; son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Soukup; nine grandchildren; mother, Mary Soukup; two brothers, Arnold H. and Ray; and one sister, Rubye Prokop.

    Raymond "Ray" Earl Soukup, 83, of Lincoln, passed away June 18, 2010 peacefully at home with family by his side. Born December 19, 1926 to Harry and Mary (Skejskal) Soukup on a farm near Ohiowa. Served in Air Force, barbered in Lincoln for 25 years, retired from UNL postal service in 1989. Ray enjoyed retirement for 21 years with his wife, Betty, watching their grandchildren grow, traveling, gardening, volunteering, singing, and enjoying the Czech culture. Member of WFLA Lincoln Lodge #426, Lincoln VFW, American Legion, DAV, Capital City Czech Choraliers, Nebraska Czechs of Lincoln. Volunteered at the Food Net of Lincoln.

    Ronald D. Uldrich of Milligan, NE passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Fairview Manor in Fairmont, NE. Ronald D. Uldrich was the son of Anton W. Uldrich and Mamie (Chudly) Uldrich and was born on the family farm, section 36 NW1/4 Glengary Township in Fillmore County, NE on April 7, 1933. Ronald attended rural school District #48 in Fillmore County for his first eight years of education; he then attended Milligan Public High School District #71 and graduated in 1950.
    Ronald farmed with he father until May 12, 1958 when he was inducted into the army. His basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. From there he was sent to Korea the remainder of his time in active service and remained in the military reserves for six years following his duties in Korea. After his years with the military Ronald returned home and started farming with his father.
    Ronald met Mary L. Engle in the summer of 1955 and they were married in the summer on June 2, 1957 at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Geneva, NE. Ronald was baptized and joined the church in 1956.

    Ronald and Mary made their home in section 14 NW ? Glengary Township west of Milligan, NE. They still lived on the same farm for 58 years. Ronald and Mary just had their 58th Wedding Anniversary on June 2nd this year (2015). Together they had four children; Ronald Perry, David Rae, Janine Marie and Alex Dean.

    Ronald is a member of the American Legion HSSK Post 240 of Milligan, a member of DAU, he served on the Milligan school board for five years, and Ronald also served on the Fillmore County ASCS board.

    In 2010 Ronald helped his sons harvest their wheat crop. He was also honored on KOLN as the farmer of the week in 2006

    Ronald's hobbies included going to farm sales, listening to Polka Party and dancing.

    Rick A. Buchanan, 60 of Beatrice, NE, passed away at his home on Friday, April 24, 2020. He was born June 16, 1959 in Lincoln, NE. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1977. Rick worked with his father as an electrician before going back to school to be a network analyst. He worked four years for Hoover MFG, then moved to the east coast and worked at several companies as a network engineer. After moving back to Beatrice, he worked for BSDC, Landmark Foods and Walmart until health issues forced him to retire. He married Janine Uldrich on April 10, 2014. Rick had been involved with the Community Players. He enjoyed playing drums and was the drummer for the band "Whizker Bizket". He enjoyed Husker football, North Carolina, his Scottish Heritage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra concerts and the trees in his yard. Rick was an excellent cook, enjoying smoking and barbecuing.

    Survivors include his wife, Janine; daughters, Ciera Buchanan and Paige Buchanan both of Omaha, NE; granddaughters, Riley, Isabella, and Piper all of Omaha; 3 step-children, Clarisa Kattes of Milligan, NE, Michele Nesbitt (James) of Geneva, NE, Ethan Kattes (Amy Jo Baugh) of Hickman, NE; 3 step-grandchildren, Jordyn, Carter, and Rainie Nesbitt; mother-in-law, Mary L. Uldrich of Milligan; brothers-in-law, Ronald Uldrich (Chris) Milligan, David Uldrich of Allen, NE, and Alex Uldrich (Deborah) of Milligan; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Bernard Wayne Zeleny was born to Mike Zeleny and Frances Uldrich Zeleny on December 26, 1926 at the farm home 2 miles south of Burress, Nebraska. Bernard left his family's arms for God's on October 28, 2020 at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, Nebraska.
    As a young boy, Bernard attended Country School District #68 for two years and after his parents moved to the home place, he finished his country schooling at District #25. He later graduated with the Class of 1944 from Exeter Public School. During his youth, he enjoyed hunting with his childhood friend, Don Sluka, also trapping fur bearing animals. He was a loyal member of a beef 4-H Club. Bernard played football in High School and was active in school plays.

    During World War II, Bernard was drafted into the US Army at 18 years old and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a 74 year member of the Milligan American Legion Post #240; serving faithfully in the Color Guard. He was a Charter Member of the Milligan Rural Fireman, later serving as President. He was a member of the Milligan Lodge, Knights of Pythias, serving in all officer positions until attaining Chancellor. Bernard was an active member of the Milligan United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

    Bernard was united in marriage to Lorene Tesar on April 19, 1951 in the little white Methodist Church in Milligan. They lived their entire married life of 68 years on a farm northwest of Milligan. He was a farmer and enjoyed farming with John Deere and Oliver tractors. Bernard raised cattle all of his life. He enjoyed fixing things, reading and watching TV, especially local news, weather, and farm markets.

    God blessed their marriage with two precious children, Carol Louise and David Wayne.
    He was a loving husband, father and grandfather with a kind heart and a gentle spirit. Bernard was a man of simple tastes. He loved his family and treasured his friends. His gentle soul and quiet manner earned him the affection and admiration of many. His hard work and thoughtful management enabled his family to survive and thrive.

    Bernard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorene, his parents, Mike and Frances Zeleny, brother, Bob Zeleny, brother & sister-in-law, Ralph and Arlene Hromadka, parents-in-law, James and Barbara Tesar, and nephew, Jim Zeleny.

    He is survived by his children: daughter, Carol and husband, Patrick Darnell of Lincoln; and son, David of Milligan; grandchildren: Heather Liggett of Kansas; Benjamin Darnell of Tucson, Arizona; Laura and husband, Cody Valentine of Beatrice; and Kristen Zeleny of Lincoln; great-grandchildren: Aurora and Henry Liggett, Boston Donovan Zeleny and Vincent Valentine; sister-in-law, Diane Zeleny; nieces and nephews: Barbara Hromadka; Mike and wife, Amy Zeleny; Jeff Zeleny; Logan, Sam and Max Zeleny; Claire, Katherine, John and Lauren Zeleny; Deb and husband, Todd Cook and family; and Cindy Thieszen; and many cousins and friends.

    A 67-year-old rural Fillmore County man was killed Saturday in a tractor rollover near Exeter.

    According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Robert D. Zeleny of Fairmont died in the 3:12 p.m. accident, a quarter-mile east of Road 19 on the county Road K.

    A large bale of hay fell from a front loader of Zeleny's tractor, causing the tractor to flip and killing the farmer instantly, the Associated Press reported.

    Preceded in death by his parents, Rob leaves behind a loving family including wife Natalya, stepdaughter Yanga, mother-in-law Evgenia, sister Susan and Tim Hester of Lander, Wyoming, brother Rich and Sheri Prokop of Belgrade, Montana, several cousins and nieces, and many, many friends. Heaven welcomes home a good man. Well done, good and faithful servant.

    A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 30, at 2:00 pm. To take place at the Wilber Fire Department, located one block south of the main downtown intersection of Highways 103 and 41. Donations to the Wilber Fire and Rescue.
