2. | Thomas Jefferson Martin (1.Harriett1) was born in Jan 1819 in Mississippi; died about 1904 in Texas; was buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery (aka Whitehead Cemetery or Martin-Whitehead Cemetery), Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Shown by some as having the middle name Franklin, versus Jefferson.
Said to have received Bounty Land, as did his father William Martin, for service in the Texas Revolution. (White and Toole, p 88).
The annotated transcription of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sabine County indictates that T. J. Martin, 1819-1904, had a Military Marker reading Pvt Capt. Burroughs Co. CSA

9. | Harriet Ann Martin (2.Thomas2, 1.Harriett1) was born on 29 Jan 1852 in Texas; died on 19 Jul 1915; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
In Virgie Collier Speights column about Rev. Bob Strickland, and his wife Essie Strickland O'Riley (a second cousin and widow), it is noted that his maternal grandparents were "Tom and Becky WATKINS (sic) MARTIN, and they have five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann, his mother." (Old Timer of Sabine County, Texas, p. 54).
Harriet married Matthew Noah Strickland in 1872. Matthew (son of Noah Strickland and Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Carter) was born on 31 Oct 1849 in East Pendleton, Sabine Parish, Louisiana; died on 4 Dec 1932 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas. 10. | Clinton Martin (2.Thomas2, 1.Harriett1) was born about 1855 in Texas; and died. Notes:
Not listed by Virgie Collier Speights as one of their seven children. Might he have been related to them in some other fashion, or did he simply die young? (OLD TIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS, p. 54....'(Tom and Beckie Martin) had five sons and two daughters, Frank, Case, Lip, Jimmy, Ed, Marge and Harriet Ann...')

11. | Lewis C. "Case" "Casey" Martin (2.Thomas2, 1.Harriett1) was born on 17 Feb 1857 in Texas; died on 19 May 1908; was buried in Martin Cemetery (Martin's Chapel Cemetery), Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
AKA shown as Louis/Lewis Cass Martin. Shown simply as "L C Martin" on the death certificates of his daughters Mary and Lavisa. The death certificate of youngest daughter, Violet, instead lists him as Royal Casie Martin. It appears that informant in that case may have been assuming that Violet's brother, Royal Casie Martin, was an exact namesake of his father?
Said to be a child of Thomas Jefferson Martin and Rebecca Richardson of Sabine County by most researchers. Anita Sterling, on the "Anderson Family Tree" at Ancestry.com, shows his parents as Thomas Franklin Martin and Rebecca Richardson.
He and his wife Elizabeth lived next door to Thomas and Rebecca at the time of the 1880 census. Additionally, a Case Martin was shown as a brother of Harriett Martin Strickland, a daughter of Tom and Beckie Martin, in a newspaper column about the upcoming birthday of her son Rev. Bob Strickland in the mid 1960's.

In her annotated transcription of the Brookeland Cemetery, Kay Parker McCary shows her as the wife of A. J. (???) Powell, but later shows her husband as Richard Benjamin Powell.
A J Powell was born 14 Mar 1855-died 7 Aug 1927. Did this listing of her husband as A J Powell perhaps relate to a second marriage for Margaret, or was it simply an error?
Margaret married Richard Benjamin Powell on 14 Sep 1876 in Jasper County, Texas. Richard was born on 14 Jul 1854 in Mississippi; died on 3 Nov 1921 in Browndell, Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Brookeland Cemetery, Brookeland, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

[Excerpts of the column written by Virgie Collier Speights]
Mrs. Alpha Martin Cooper, who soon will be 77 years old, is in feeble health and has had a peck of trouble, but still has spunk and feels she also had a bushel of blessings.
The daughter of William Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Jordan Martin, she was born in a log cabin which was soon replaced by a huge double-penned, hand hewn log dwelling with wide hall and front and back porches, which was within two miles of where she has lived all her life, except for a brief scurry into West Texas in search of greener pastures.
With seven boys and six girls, the Martins, who were trying to wrest a living from the reluctant land, needed every hand....As soon as she was old enough, Mrs. Cooper was picking cotton alongside her older brothers and sisters...
Her parents were born in the area in which they lived, but their parents had come from Mississippi. Her grandparents were Thomas Jefferson Martin and Rebecca Richardson on her fathers side, and Lewis Jordan and Josephine Letney on her mothers side...(she was schooled) in a one-room log building, called Pleasant Grove located near Pineland, which is still standing. Her teachers included Lena Williams, a sister of the late Sim Williams, Tom Sutton and a Mr. McLanahan. James Scott Cooper, whom she married on 28 May 1905, attended the same school.
Alpha married James Scott Cooper on 29 May 1905 in Sabine County, Texas. James (son of James Amberson Cooper and Amelia Elizabeth Jacks) was born on 12 Jan 1883 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas; died on 11 Apr 1963 in Port Arthur, Jefferson County, Texas; was buried in Jacks Cemetery, Pineland, Sabine County, Texas. From OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS "In 1906 he was married to Mrs. Essie Strickland O'Riley, a widow with three children. To this union was born five sons. His wife was a good Christian woman and the children were brought up in the church, but he could not feel the conviction of saving grace until his mother died. His wife rejoiced but when he felt the call to preach, about 2 am one morning, and told his wife about it when she was making breakfast, he opened his Bible and began preaching.. she burned the meat and bread. Strickland has been preaching for years up and down the East Texas area has an unshakeable faith and believes in faith healing, citing as examples his recovery from TB and his wife's from cancer, after the doctors had given up on them....The Strickland's are a handsome, dignified couple, and thoroughly enjoy telling of the early trials of his ministry and the struggle to rear their 8 children on a minister's intermittent stipend. "The Lord always provided!" was Brother Bobs's prompt answer to any problem. "I recall once when I was preaching in Nacogdoches, the larder was completely empty and Essie was fretting something awful. I prayed and sure enough, an old colored man delivered a load of groceries." Born near Bronson, Rev. and Mrs. Strickland were second cousins. They attended the one room, three month session schools. "I spent two sessions in the Blue Back Speller before I graduated to a reader, slate, and pencil" recalls Strickland. A lady by the name of Evans was their first teacher, with Miss Jennie Oliphint a later teacher. Later schooling was at Newton with Professor Jim Sharpe as teacher; then there was a year each at Burkville, Jasper, Hemphill, and Timpson. Strickland grew up in a religious home with revival meetings and grove prayer meetings a regular part of his childhood. He worked for Jim Toole at Hemphill in his store, then went to Bronson when his father opened a grocery store and cafe. There he got in with the wrong crowd and lived a wicked life for several years.... The oldest Strickland son died in 1962."
