Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Milton Garrett was born about 1804 in Tennessee; died before 1870.

    Notes:

Settled on the east side of the Attoyac River, about nine miles west of the Ayish Bayou. He moved into a hand hewn log house and remained there for the rest of his life. The old log house still stands today. Owned by Milton Garrett's descendants, it is located on the south side of the Old San Antonio Road on top of the hill, one mile east of the Attoyac River. (Noble, San Augustine Tribune "William Garrett Plantation Was Near Town" 6 April 1995)

Per the 1860 census, he was a Farmer with $6,219 in real estate and $37,650 in personal property.

He was not listed on the 1870 census, presumably having died. His widow and all of his children were still living on the farm, which was now valued at $5,000, with $2,000 in personal property. Bill and Francis Harrison, a black couple with two young children were living with them as well, as household servants. Also living with them was 24 year old S.D. Horton from Alabama, a white farm laborer. By 1880, only Sam, Claiborne and James were still living at home.

Family/Spouse: Elizabeth Hamil. Elizabeth was born about 1816 in Tennessee; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 2. Robert Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1847 in Texas; and died.
    2. 3. Samuel Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1849 in Texas; and died.
    3. 4. Thomas Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1851 in Texas; and died.
    4. 5. Mary Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1852 in Texas; and died.
    5. 6. John "Jack" Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1854 in Texas; died before 1880.
    6. 7. Claiborne Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1856 in Texas; and died.
    7. 8. Milton Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1857 in Texas; and died.
    8. 9. James Garrett  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1858 in Texas; and died.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Robert Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1847 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Where was he at the time of the 1880 Texas census? Can't find at either his mother's home or in his own household.

  2. 3.  Samuel Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1849 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Was the census enumerator in 1880 for prencinct two of San Augustine County, Texas. Was unmarried and living with his widowed mother and two of his brothers.

  3. 4.  Thomas Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1851 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

On the 1880 census, 15 year old Taylor Haygood, listed as "brother in law" to Thomas, was living in the home of Thomas and Gertrude Garrett.

Family/Spouse: Gertrude Haygood. Gertrude was born about 1858 in Louisiana; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 5.  Mary Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1852 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Not living at home at the time of the 1880 San Augustine County census. Presumed to be either married or dead.

In Book Two of the San Augustine County, Texas Marriage book, there are marriage records listed for a "Mary Garrett" to Joseph Little in 1865, to Henry Sublett in 1869, and to Madison Sexton in 1876.

Mary would have been only 13 in 1865, presumably too young to have married Joseph Little. Joseph Little can not be located in San Augustine County in 1870 or 1880.

The Mary Garrett who married Henry Sublett in 1869 was somewhere born sometime between 1835 (ref: 1880 census) and 1842 (ref: 1870 census). As Mary was born circa 1852, she could not have been the Mary Garrett who was wed to Henry Sublett.

Mary would have been 24 in 1876, and would have been the correct age to marry Madison Sexton. No listing can be found for Madison and Mary Sexton in 1880 in San Augustine County. If they did marry, perhaps they moved away from San Augustine.

  5. 6.  John "Jack" Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1854 in Texas; died before 1880.

    Notes:

John "Jack" Garrett appears to have died before the 1880 census, as his young wife, Annie Gilbert Garrett is living at home with her parents and he is not listed either with his parents or individually.

Family/Spouse: Annie Gilbert. Annie (daughter of William Gilbert and Sophronia ???) was born about 1858; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 7.  Claiborne Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1856 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Was unmarried in 1880, and living with his widowed mother and two of his brothers.

  7. 8.  Milton Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1857 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Where is he in 1880? Can't find on San Augustine census transcription.

  8. 9.  James Garrett Descendancy chart to this point (1.Milton1) was born about 1858 in Texas; and died.

    Notes:

Assumed that this is the James Garrett that married Mattie Gilbert by the process of elimination. He and Mattie were both unmarried in 1880, and both still living in their parent's home. This is confirmed by examining the 1920 census, where James parents were both shown as born in Tennessee, and his brother Claiborne was living with him. The obituary of his son, Milton Garrett confirms this.

The only other possible candidate living in San Augustine in 1880, was a J.A. Garrett, born ca 1856 in Mississippi. This J.A. Garrett was also unmarried in 1880, living in prencinct 2, household #88-92 with his 60 year old widowed mother from Alabama. J.A. Garrett's father was listed as being born in South Carolina. The aforementioned "J.A. Garrett" appears to be unrelated to the other Garrett's in San Augustine, and as such would not be a direct descendant of Alcade Jacob Garrett of Tennessee.

    Obituary

Vernon Earl McLemore, 79, went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2018, after a brief illness. This was exactly one month short of his 80th birthday. He was surrounded by family. Vernon was born on June 19, 1938, in San Augustine, Texas to the late Ira "Ray" McLemore and Opal Hensarling McLemore. Vernon was a staff sergeant on active duty in the US Air Force from 1961 to 1962. He was then in the US Air Force Reserves from 1961-1966. After his years of service, Vernon worked in the family Locker Plant alongside his father Ray. During this time they also opened the first McLemore Laundry in San Augustine. Mr. McLemore was married to his loving wife Brenda on June 19th, 1984. Vernon was a Christian man with deeply embedded Christian values and had a passion for studying the bible and sharing the word. Vernon had a farm and cattle in the Chireno area where he spent much time up until his stroke in 2010. His years of working with cattle led him to enjoy attending the cattle auction each week even up until the past couple of weeks. He also had numerous friends in the community who he enjoyed playing dominoes with weekly. Most recently, Vernon also enjoyed spending time with his sweet little great-grandchildren Hailey, Caden, Kash, Hurley, Abby and Calvin.

The following is excerpted from a cover story in "Services: The Magazine for the Building Service Contracting Industry" Volume XIV, Number 1, January 1999.

PROFILE: BSCAI's New President Donald McLemore, CBSE McLemore Building Maintenance, Inc.

Donald McLemore, CBSE, heads a major Southwest building service company. This year, he will lead the Building Service Contractors Association International. In this interview, McLemore describes his company, his philosophy, and his vision for BSCAI and the industry.

How did McLemore Building Maintenance get started? I first arrived in Houston in 1964 with $35 in my pocket and no automobile. After several types of jobs, sometimes three at the same time, I settled down to the pick up and delivery of laundry and dry cleaning for almost five years. However, I had been raised in an entrepreneurial family, and was continually looking around for something I could do on my own. We looked at a washeteria, a fast food restaurant, a bar, a laundry, and a fishing marina. I told Torah Lee---I got married in 1966--that I could be the fishing guide and she could run the store and take care of the bait. She didn't seem to like that idea or the one about owning a bar. She said I would drink up all the profits. Early one morning I was picking up Dr. Walker's office laundry, and he was complaining about his cleaning service. I told him that I could do what he needed done if he would let me try. He gave me the job and a week later I had bought several other small accounts from another contractor. That was September 1, 1970. The first month's total billing was $513.50 but we did all the work so it was a pretty good profit. Married, two very young children, a brand new home, and on July 3, 1971, I gave up the laundry business and went into the janitorial industry full time. It was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make but one that I have never regretted.

MBM is a family-owned and run business. What roles or positions do your family members fill? Torah Lea retired after 26 years in January 1997 but still comes in whenever we are short-handed. Keith, our oldest son, started sweeping floors in our warehouse 12 years ago, and has been the Houston Operations Manager for the past five years. Curtis, our youngest son, came on board five years ago in Special Services and is Director of Marketing and Sales today. Stephanie, Curtis's wife, is the MBM Office Manager. Evita, Keith's new wife, started as an assistant to the Human Resources Manager. Then there is Nina, my sister. She is the Executive Secretary and has been with us for 13 years. Of course, there are many others who are just like my kids whom have been here for years.....Last year's BOMA Building of the Year in Houston was cleaned by MBM for Trammel Crow. We clean and cut the yards on several hundred phone company buildings in three states. A chemical plant that is spread out over six thousand acres with 124 buildings...
