Mrs. Christina Jaus Found Dead in Field Thursday
Left Home to Go to Her Son's During Night and Became Lost in Storm
The body of Mrs. Christina Jaus, 76, was found in a field 30 rods from the farm residence of her son, Samuel Jaus, who resides in Elkland Township, four miles northeast of Cass City, early Thursday morning. Mrs. Jaus' death was probably due to exposure, her body having lain in the field several hours.
After Samuel Jaus had finished milking at his barn shortly before seven o'clock Thursday morning, he glanced over at the residence of his mother, who resided just across the highway from his home, and noticed that the chimney had blown donw during the heavy wind which prevailed during the night. He decided to go at once to her home and ascertain if she had been frightened by the noise of the fallen bricks. On arriving there, he failed to find his mother int he house. Alarmed, he immediately instituted a search with the results that her dead body was found about 70 rods from her home. It is thought that Mr. Jaus, frightened by the falling chimney, left her home to go to the residence of her son about 40 rods distant. She crossed the highway and entered her son's farm through a driveway a short distance east of his house. Here her footprints show that she walked in the mud before the ground froze during the night, her steps taking a southeasterly course across the field. She carried a flashlight to light the way. Where Mrs. Jaus was prevented from reaching her son's house by the strong wind which prevailed, if she became lost in the darkness in the journey between the two homes, or whether she suffered a slight stroke just previous of at the time she made the trip is not known. One or all of these may have contributed to the cause of her death. While Mrs. Jaus has been subject to heart trouble, she has been unusually well this winter. When she was last seen alive, she was at the farm barn Wednesday evening after her supple of milk and appeared in good spirts.
Christina was born in Wurtenberg, Germany March 24, 1852. She was united in marriage with George Jaus and within two years of that time they came to America, arriving in Cass City in March, 1873. Mr. Jaus passed away in 1900.
Mrs. Jaus was a member of the Evangelical church. She will be remembered by her friends for her cheerful disposition and kindly manner. Besides her three sons, Samuel and Fred Jaus of Cass City and John Jaus of Cleveland, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jacob JOOS of Cass City and Mrs. John CROCKER of Saginaw. Seven children preceded the mother in death. Funeral arrangements had not been completed when the Chronicle went to press Thursday afternoon.

Find Their Son Dead in Bed
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Jaus Made Startling Discovery Saturday Morning
Young Man Was in Usual Health When he Retired on Friday Evening
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel JAUS of Elkland township were terribly shocked and grieved Saturday morning when they found their son, George, aged 17 years, dead in his bed. The young man had been in his usual health on Friday, having worked all day buzzing wood. He spent the evening in playing the phonograph and visiting with members of the family. When he failed to answer the morning call Saturday, his parents made the startling discovery of his demise. Death was due to appoplexy.
George Alvin Jaus was born in Elkland Township, Feb. 23, 1903. He attended the "Brick" school three miles northeast of Cass City until he had finished the eighth grade and since that time has been employed on his parents's farm where he proved to be a great help and an efficient coworker with his father in carrying out the farming operations.
The young man was a member of the Evangelical church and took much interest in the Sunday school of that church. He was held in high esteem by his many friends.
Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. F.L POHLY officiating and interment was made in Elkland cemetery. Vernon STRIFFLER, Grant PATTERSON, Leonard STRIFFLER, Arlie SPENCER, Lawrence BUEHRLY and Louis STRIFFLER, members of George's Sunday school class, acted as pallbearers.
Besides his parents, he leaves one sister, Minnie.
Art Peck relates the following family story, "George grew so large that his heart could not take it."

Obituary
WILLIAM MAURICE JOOS,
100, of Independence, MO formerly of Cass City went to be at the right hand of God Sunday, October 23, 2011 in Northcare Hospice House, North Kansas City, MO. He was born July 18, 1911 in Cass City to Frederick William and Hattie (Muck) Joos. He married Eva Mae Sovey February 27, 1937. She died October 11, 1967. He later married Frances Diebel August 26, 1972 in Lapeer. She died June 9, 1995.
Maurice worked on the family farm with his Dad. He also worked for McClellan Creamery, the Nestles Plant in Cass City, Peters Sawmill, REA, Dr. Donahue Farms, and the Ford Garage. He retired from Bauer Candy Company after 27 years as a Salesman. Maurice's passions in life were serving the Lord and his church. He would brag to everyone who visited that he was a member of the Cass City United Methodist Church for 78 years and that he sang in the choir for 73 years. He sang in different men's choruses, quartets and trios and even sang on the radio in Detroit. Another passion of Maurice's was baseball. He loved the Detroit Tigers. He was able to see five games since he came to Independence, MO. This summer when Detroit came to play Kansas City he was able to get out to the ballpark and cheer for his Detroit team. When the Tigers would get the Kansas City Royals out he would clap his hands and have a big grin on his face. This may have been the first time he ever attended a major league game. He was amazed at the condition of the field. Maurice often boasted about his .350 batting average in high school. God had a plan for Maurice to watch his Detroit Tigers have a winning season and when they lost to the Texas Rangers his mission was over. The Lord wanted Maurice to play baseball for him now.
Maurice is survived by his sons: Richard (Connie) Joos of Independence, MO, Donald (JoEllen) Joos of Grand Rapids; 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ted Diebel; sisters-in-law: Bob and Mary (Diebel) Dast, Jerry and Florence (Diebel) Decker, Lola Diebel; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters: Lena Hanes and Helen Jezewski; great grandson, Ryan Joos.
Funeral service held 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 28, 2011 in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Chuck Emmert of Duplain Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to NorthCare Hospice, North Kansas City, MO. Maurice's family would like to give special thanks to NorthCare Hospice nurses who were so good and caring for him. Also a thank you to the friends that visited him: Gary Bernhardt, Bob and Joyce McArthur, Bob and Mary Dast.
