    • One of the earliest settlers in the Morse Bluff vicinity was Joseph Datel and family. Mr. Datel was born in 1826 in Kolec, Czechoslovakia. His wife, Anna Sukova was born in Kobelinki, Austria. They were married in Austria on May 25, 1852, and came to America in 1867 bringing their seven children with them. One of the children died on the voyage and was buried at sea.

The family first lived at Fort Madison, Iowa where Mr. Datel worked at his trade as a blacksmith. In 1871 they moved to Saunders County and located on a farm south of Morse Bluff. Here he farmed and did blacksmithing. He spoke and was able to read Bohemian, German and English. Mrs. Datel, however, never learned English. In 1882 they moved to North Bend where he bought a blacksmith shop. In all 12 children were born. Mr. Datel died in 1902 and his wife lived to be 94.

Caroline Mastny lists the children of Joseph Datel as:

      1. Mary Datel Matejka 2. Elizabeth Datel Bloch 3. Emma Datel Howe 4. Rosalie Datel Soukup 5. Anna Datel 6. Caroline Datel Beznoska 7. James Datel, Perry, Oklahoma 8. Thomas Datel, Winners, South Dakota 9. Frank Datel, North Bend, Nebraska 10. Joseph Datel 11. Frankie Datel---Duplicate? should this be Willy? 12. Anton Datel

I noted that Frank and Frankie were both shown as sons. I assumed Frankie was a duplicate, and did not list him. This should be researched further. Also, daughter Matildy, shown on the 1880 census is not listed. Perhaps this is the middle name of one of the other daughters, but for now I listed her, along with the other daughters. This also should be researched further.

Lillian Bartosh Datel is standing behind Frank B. and to her left is Frank Beznoska II who married Caroline. Spouses are standing behind the three ladies on the right. Behind Rosalie is Anton Soukup, it appears, but is not known with certainty, that next to Rosalie is Emma Howe with spouse behind her, (or maybe instead Elizabeth Bloch) and Mary Ann (Datel) Matejka with spouse, John Henry Matejka, behind her. Thomas Datel's wife Mary Krofta IS NOT in the photo and his two sons may or may not be the two boys on the ground on the far left. Anton and James Datel were also not pictured. Anton was living in Wisconsin and James was in Oklahoma. PLEASE HELP US IDENTIFY THE UNKNOWNS IN THIS PHOTO.
