    Notes
    • In her letter dated September 4, 1999, Carolyn Lockhart writes "Malichi Morgan served in the same Texas Cavalry as my John A. Powell did. John Powell is buried in a confederate cemetery at Camp Butler, Illinois with a rebel marker which is pointed at the top, so the Yankee's couldn't sit on it. He left a wife Lucy Thomas (who later married John Lee) and two small children, John Walter Powell & Emma Luvenia." A photo of his tombstone is shown on FindAGrave. It further indicates he served in Co. G, 24 Texas Cavalry.

A FindAGrave listing for his daughter, Emma Luvenia Powell, states, apparently in error, that her father John A. Powell died on 10 Mar 1868 in Jasper County.
