  Notes	Leatha Betts thinks he may have been Thomas MASSEY. Leatha Betts (777 West 1000 South Woods Cross, UT 84087 (jlabetts@burgoyne.com)) also emailed that on the BLM land patents page "a Thomas Massey purchased land in Copiah/Simpson (directly above Lawrence Co), Block 32 Township 10 N, Range 21 W at the Mt. Salus land office, sons Nathan, William rec. land 10 Dec. 1840 in Copiah (Thomas may have died, this could be Uney's husband? Her brothers-in law may have arranged her to meet him?) and other son Thomas Jr. rec. land in Simpson 10 Dec. 1840.... This isn't definitive proof, but I think that Thomas Massey was Uney's 2nd husband...." The following Massey's are shown on Irene and Norman Gillis's 1830 Mississippi Census Index: Massey, John Amite 05400010-00100 Massey, Rufus Marion00210-00000 Massie, Pattypool Copiah00100-00000 None of these men appear to be have three stepdaughters listed in their home. Perhaps Una married one of them after the 1830 census.

  	It appears that the widowed or divorced Una Carter Vardeman married a Mr. Massey sometime after 1825 but before 1840. It further appears that Mr. Massey died or otherwise left Una prior to 1840. This is based on the birth of Una's daughter Jemimah Amazia Vardeman in 1825, and the 1840 Pike County, Mississippi census, which lists her "Uny Massy." Una can be found as the head of a household consisting solely of females in Pike County, Mississippi in 1840.
