    • La Juan Halbert Garrett of Chireno, Texas, died November 21, 2021, at Colonial Pines in San Augustine, Texas. She had just turned 82.

      She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Garrett; her two daughters, Kim Garrett, who lives in Dallas, and Kara Garrett Briley, who lives in Chireno; a grandson, Benjamin Garrett Tompkins and his wife Emily, who live in Dallas; a sister, Mattie James, who lives in Conroe; and many nieces and nephews.

      She was preceded in death by her son, Tracy Allen Garrett; grandson, Justin Colt Briley; her brothers, Lee Alfred Halbert and Robert Kent Halbert; and her parents, Arvie Lee Halbert and Vera Lucille Shippey Halbert.

      La Juan was born November 11, 1939, in Chireno to Arvie Lee and Lucille Halbert. La Juan was the third of four children. She grew up on Depot Street in Chireno.

      She graduated from Chireno High School two years early and graduated summa cum laude at Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in Education and two masters degrees in Education.

      She married Kenneth Haze Garrett on September 2, 1958, and they had three children, Kim, Kara, and Tracy.

      La Juan taught school in Houston, Orange, Broaddus, and Chireno.

      She was very active in her community serving at Chireno Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and played the piano for services, The Historical Society, and as a former president and member of the Nacogdoches County Retired Teachers Association.

      Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Friday, November 26, 2021, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in San Augustine, Texas, with Bro. Mike Belgard officiating. Interment will follow at Lower Chireno Cemetery in Chireno, Texas.

      Pallbearers: Tommy Mooney, Ben Tompkins, Collin Noble, Rodney Butler, Glen Benefield, and Oswald Smith.
