Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery. Self died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, in University Medical Center. He was born Jan. 31, 1944, in Slaton. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1963. He graduated from Henderson County College, while on a football scholarship. He also attended Stephen F. Austin University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, and he received two Purple Hearts. He was a fireman with the Longview Fire Department, and he was on the Rescue & SCUBA squad. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Postal Service, having been a city letter carrier for eight years in Floydada. National Cemetery Administration.
