He died in Cotulla, but was buried in San Augustine County, but the specific cemetery was not listed. The 24 Dec 1952 issues of "The Victoria Advocate" reported that "Laurie James Mathews, 56-year-old LaSalle County farmer, was killed Wednesday when his car ran off a road near Millet and hit an embankment."
