Notes from Linda Fuller at the Chance Family Genealogy Forum from 2006 and 2007.

Posted by Linda Fuller, 4 Jan 2006

actually I'm interested in any information you may have about Sam Chance. What do you know about his relationship with Stephen Chance. My research indicates that he was Stephen's son by a second marriage. Sam Chance is my husband's grandfather.

Response from Dale Rubel, 5 Jan 2006

Linda, Carol Daugherty is my sister-in-law. I have info on Stephen Chance and Malinda Eaves, I don't show a Samuel Chance as a child. I also do not show another spouse for Stephen just Malinda. Maybe I've missed something??

Subsequent response from Linda Fuller, 6 Jan 2006

In the 1900 Shelby County, Texas Census, Stephen Chance, b: Jan 1828 in Louisiana appears with Wife Martha, b: Oct 1848 in Texas. They have Children Annie Nov 1882, Sarah Sept 1884, Stephan Oct 1887, Jodie Aug 1888, Sannie (hard to read but is listed as son b: March 1891) Amie Feb 1894. All the children listed born in Texas.

Now I have Sam Chance being born in March of 1889 but he could neither read nor write and as you probably know you the dates listed on Census are not chisled in stone. Many times they are off by more than a few years.

I have checked the records at Austin College and can not find a record of Stephen and Martha's marriage. I have checked San Augustine, Shelby and Sabine Counties. I have also checked the Counties in Louisiana that Stephen's family originated in. But, the birth date for Stephen is correct and he was a widower on the 1880 census. Plus he had land in both San Augustine and Shelby counties. This would make all of these children a second family with a second wife if this is indeed the same Stephen Chance. This is why I think Sam was the son of Stephen and Martha.

Now there was also a Sam Chance born in August 1891 in Louisiana living in East Feliciana Louisiana with his parents Henry and Ella Chance. I suppose there is a chance this could be my Sam, but I have found that on the Census there is more apt to be a mistake on the year of birth than on the month for some reason.

In the posting from Carol Daugherty at the very end, she states that she has more information on Sam and Houston. That is what caught my eye and why I posted my message. I would love to find out what information she might have, as Sam has been somewhat of a brick wall for me.

Additional information posted by Linda Fuller, 17 July 2007

Dale, I have received copies of a Preemption Deed for Stephen Chance dated May 26 1877 in which he buys 160 acres of land situated in both San Augustine and Shelby Counties. I also have a copy of a Warranty Deed dated May 1st 1889. On the first there is no listing of a wife, on the second his wife is listed as both Martha Chance and M.A.C. Chance. These deeds are for the same property. I have so far been unable to find any more information on Martha other than on the 1900 census for Shelby County. When I enlarged the census, it was plain that the name I thought might be Sam was Sami. I still think this is my Sam Chance married to Mineola McDaniel. Stephen was listed on the 1900 census for Shelby county with a second family and wife Martha. Would be glad to share information. You can email me direct if you want to.
