      Melba Laverne Medley

      Melba Laverne Medley, 70, died suddenly in her home in Brookeland Saturday night, December 25, 2010. She was born in Kirbyville to Clarence Cledoth and Alma Lee Dryden Williams and had lived in Brookeland for 32 years, moving there from Jasper.

      Mrs. Medley is survived by sons, Glenn Smith and Jerry Keith Smith, both of Brookeland, Robert Lee Medley of Bryan, and Stephen Medley of Alabama; daughter, Melba Alicia Medley of Victoria; brother, James Cledoth Williams of Jasper, sisters, Marjorie Y'Barbo of Kirbyville, Linda Whitton of Jasper, Brenda Ward of of Buna and Jo Ann Williams of Cushing. She is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

      Mrs. Medley was preceded in death by sons, Clyde Cledoth Smith and Joseph Edward Medley.

      Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 28 in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill. Burial followed in the Weeks Chapel Cemetery in Newton County.

      Note: A page 1 article, titled "Christmas Day Tragedy," noted that Medley, who was disabled and relied on a wheelchair for mobility, died in a house fire. Firefighters believe the fire may have begun in the living room, where numerous space heaters were located.
