Gardiner, 94, of Broken Rocks, near Port Austin, died Nov. 8 at Huron Memorial Hospital, Bad Axe, following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 14, 1888 in Scandia, Kan., the son of Pinckney and Annie (Franklin) Gardiner. Edward Gardiner and Viola MURRAY were married in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death May 9, 1940. He married Mary E. Striffler Oct. 1, 1941, in Geneva, Ohio. The couple lived the past 26 years at Broken Rock. Gardiner was the superintendent of the Detroit House of Correction, retiring in 1956. He was a life member of Raytown No. 391, F and AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Kansas City, Mo.; the Moslem Shrine Temple, Detroit, and a member of the Huron Shrine Club. Gardiner was the senior active member of the Bad Axe Rotary Club and a former Detroit Old Newsboy member. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Peter (Virginia) KLOPP, Farmington Hills; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Beth RUEDY, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Lee Anna BENJAMIN, Santa Monica, Calif., and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Marion and Charles, and two sisters, Floy and Ida, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at the MacAlpine Funeral Home, Bad Axe. Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery mausoleum.
