    • In the biography of H. W. Spitler, published in "Portrait Biographical Album of Clinton and Shiawasse Counties, Mich", it was noted that he was the godson of Absalom Spitler, "a farmer whose native place was Virginia in which State he was born in 1802. He came to Ohio in 1827 where he purchased one hundred acres in Bristol Township, Trumbull County. He married in Virginia in 1825 to Sarah Bowers, a daughter of John and Anna (Miller) Bowers. Sarah was born in 1802. She and her husband were the parents of thirteen children, of who our subject's father was the third son and ninth child. Sarah died in 1887 and Absalom died in 1889.
