Pat, as she was affectionately known, began her education in a country school. She graduated from Milligan High School with the class of 1957. After high school, she began employment in Lincoln, Nebraska with Farmer's Mutual Insurance Company.
Pat was married to Gaylord Otto Bartels on April 13, 1958 and to them two children were born: Lowell & Sherrill.
Pat and Gaylord moved to Gaylord's family farm near Tobias, Nebraska. She helped with milking dairy cows and all of the necessary farm chores. She also worked various jobs through the years including as a cook at the Western School and sewing at Kellwood's in Fairbury, Nebraska. The majority of her working years were as a bank teller at Farmers & Merchants Bank in Milligan, Nebraska and First National Bank in Fairbury, Nebraska where she finished out her working years.
Pat had many interests including gardening, sewing, decorating cakes for many occasions, especially her family's birthdays, and canning many fruits and vegetables from her orchard and garden. She had a green thumb for growing African Violets in every color and cared for many different house plants. She also had a soft spot for stray dogs and cats, never turning one away and taking in many over the years. She was involved in the Red Hats Society, garden club, a bowling league and enjoyed playing cards. Pat was also obsessed with crafting, making many craft items and selling at different craft shows. She also enjoyed travel, going on many bus trips and plane trips near and far. Her 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren were called her 'littles' and she adored all of them!
