    Notes
    • Helen graduated from Milligan High School in 1933, and studied Normal Training, including taking education courses through the University of Nebraska. She taught in several rural schools in Saline County. During winter the pupils surrounded the pot belly stove with their lunch pails in hopes of having their food at least room temperature. Teachers were the janitors and even carried in the coal and cobs from outdoors. After many years of helping her husband with the family farm, her interest in youth led her to seek employment at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, Nebraska in 1971. She retired in 1985. (Milligan, p 287).
