- When he registered for the draft, during the First World War, he showed his name as James Ell Chance. He was a farmer in Rebecca, San Augustine County, Texas, and his nearest relative was his wife, Maggie May Chance. He was described as of medium heighth and build, with blue eyes and dark hair, and indicated he had "lost one eye." His great-granddaughter, June Butchee, writes that James was a prohibition officer in the 1920's, and was killed in the line of duty.
