Jefferson Haggerty was Chief Justice (County Judge) of San Augustine County (1840), but was killed soon after in an ambush resulting from the Shelby County Feud. Malinda Bowie Haggerty was said to have been a niece of James Bowie of Alamo fame. "It is a known fact by descendants still living that she was a half-sister of the three Harvey children whom she brought to Texas and reared." (White and Toole, p 43).
