      Alvin "Shorty" Powell

      Alvin "Shorty" Powell, 77 of Brookeland died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Jasper Convalescent Center in Jasper.

      Powell was a native and lifelong resident of the Brookeland area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Jasper County Precinct 1 after 36 years of service.

      Survivors: wife, Esther Powell of Brookeland; a son, Roy Powell of Jasper, a daughter, Carolyn Martinez of Houston; sisters, Lena Myers of Zavalla and Vina Arbuckle of Elgin, grandchildren Regina Eardley, Danny Davis, Michael Powell, Kurt Powell, and Cody Powell; and great-grandchildren, Weston Eardley, Jared Eardley, Trae Powell, and Kamryn Powell.

      Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at the chapel of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper. Interment followed in Remling cemetery.
