| Zahn, Leontine (center and mother of the girls) and her daughters, Bennie, Lucy, Amanda, and Nettie (l to r) Amanda Zahn and Emile Martin were married in 1945. Johnette Martin recounts that within a few years of their wedding, her father took her mother, her grandmother, and her three Aunt's, all single at the time, on a car trip to Canada. Her father did most of the driving. At one point, however, one of his sister-in-law's was at the wheel, and imprudently tried to pass a vehicle. Had he not quickly jammed his foot over hers, they wouldn't have survived. This photo was taken during that memorable trip.

She, her husband, Jacob Striffler, and children, immigrated to New York state in the 1830's. Some of the older Striffler family members recalled a family joke-there were 11 boys in the family, and all of them had a sister Susanna. Susanna married C. O. Lenzner, an immigrant from Leubetha, Germany.

| Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery (Jasper, Texas) Historical Marker Local traditions and Baptist Church records indicate that the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1852 with the Rev. John BEAN as first pastor. The first church building on this site is thought to have been a small log house. On August 16, 1853, Aurin Goodgame HORN donated 3 acres including the graveyard to the Zion Hill Baptist Church. The oldest marker is that of Joseph WOOD, who was born in 1792 in North Carolina and died in Jasper County on September 16, 1854. The original church building was quickly replaced by a board-and-batten structure and int he 1880's a large frame building. This stood until 1967, when it was demolished and replaced by a modern brick edifice outside the cemetery's main fence. Of over 1,186 graves in Zion Hill Cemetery, 36 are unmarked or unknown. Several were citizens of the Republic of Texas, 75 war vetarans are interred on this site. The graves of 102 young children bear witness to the high infant mortality rate among pioneers. Another notable grave is that of the Rev. A.C. SIMS (1845-1920) who was born in the Republic of Texas, served in the Confederate Army, and was a pastor of the Zion Hill Baptist Church.

| _Falk, Walter S. B. 1945 Pennsylvania D. 2007 Texas
Walter graduated from The University of Texas at Austin. He attended graduate school in philosophy, but when his advisor lost his Ph.D. dissertation, Falk crossed Guadalupe St. and began painting and selling watercolors on the sidewalk. Falk pushed to establish a dedicated marketplace for artists and craftspeople, which led to the creation of the People's Renaissance Market. He was an exquisite artist with a distinctive artistic style-lyrical, whimsical and captivating. He combined dreamlike color in watercolor, acrylic, or oil backgrounds, with human figures inked with unerring gesture and movement, with brief, poetic titles. He had gallery shows, but he felt art belonged to the people, not to the upper crust alone. So he sold his paintings on the street and in festivals, which made him a keen human observer, contributing to his artistic reach even as it challenged him materially. Walter loved beauty, and made many sacrifices for his art. He sold nearly 40,000 original works in his life time, an achievement friends believe is unequalled, and he sold them on every continent on the globe.
