"J.T. Hawthorne Taken by Death, Prominent Roganville Pioneer Survived by 350 Descendants"

Jasper, Texas (November 3, 1934) Joshua Timothy Hawthorne, 85, one of east Texas' most prominent pioneers, died at his home at Roganville, following a month's illness.

"Uncle Tim" as he was known to his friends, was born in Decatur, Georgia, February 2, 1849, but moved to Texas at the age of 8 years and has been a Jasper county resident ever since. This is the first death to occur in his immediate family despite the fact that he was the father of 14 children and now has approximately 350 descendants. (NOTE: this seems high, compared to the count of 96 grandchildren and 35 great-granchildren mentioned in his wife's obituary two years later. Perhaps they are including nieces in nephews in the count of 350?) He has been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for the last 45 years.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Sunday at Friendship near Roganville. Elder S.D. Newton of the Primitive Baptist Church at Orange will officiate. Burial will follow there under the direction of the Stringer Undertaking company of Jasper. He is survived by his wife, Mary, eight sons, F.P, J.C., J.T., Sion and Walter of Kirbyville, Polk, Tommie, and Zora of Roganville, six daughters Mrs. H.C. West of Kirbyville, Mrs. D.A. Jones and Mrs. J.N. Martin of Roganville, Mrs. U.M. Hooks of Bleakwood, Mrs. C.S.Day of Newton and Mrs. Earl Norberg of Ashland, Oregon; 184 grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren.

Cochran Family Came to Bleakwood in 1842

By The Jasper County Historical Commission

Barbara Smith of the Bon Ami community contributed the following information.

In 1842, William Cochran boarded a houseboat in Indiana and traveled by way of the Mississippi and Red Rivers, across Louisiana to what later would become Newton County. On the banks of Thickety Creek in the community now know as Bleakwood, he and his brother-in-law Rueben Bennington, built a water mill. Later they would sell this mill to Jesse Lee, who would build a sawmill, gristmill and cotton gin there.

William, son of Glass and Mahatable Fuller Cochran, has been born in 1802 in Massachusetts and around 1829 had moved to Indiana and married Mary Polly Bennington, a sister of Reuben who had been born in Kentucky in 1808.

For the first 13 years of their marriage William and Mary made their home in Indiana. It was there they had the following children: Mahatable, born in 1830, who would marry Eli White on Feb 23, 1853 in Newton County; Angelina, born 1832, who would marry Alfred West in Newton County on Apr 3, 1851; Alfred J., born Jan 30,1834; Washington D. C., born 1837, who never married and died in the Civil War at Vermillionville, Louisiana, on Aug 10, 1863; and Lydia Ann, born 1840, who married John Matthew Bivens on Jan 13, 1860 in Newton.

After their arrival in Texas, another daughter, Mary Ann was born in 1843. She would later marry Henry Bivens on Feb 4, 1868 in Jasper County.

Alfred J. Cochran, third child of William and Mary, also served in the Confederate States Army, but unlike his brother who was killed, would return home to marry Missouri Ann Bruce on Oct 26, 1865. He and Missouri Ann had the following six children: Robert B., born Sep 26, 1866; William W., born 1868; Walter Hughey, born July 1873; Mary J., born June 3, 1878, who married Tom Choats in 1894; Alfred Boyce, born June 1884; and Pearl, born Oct 3, 1886, who married Jeff Havens.

Alfred died on Oct 16, 1888 and was buried at Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper County. Missouri Ann lived to be 83, dying on Sep 23, 1926. She was buried beside Alfred at Zion Hill.

William married Mary "Polly" Bennington on 10 Feb 1827 in Indiana. Mary was born about 1808 in Kentucky; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 11.  Mary "Polly" Bennington was born about 1808 in Kentucky; and died.

    Notes:

    Married:
Glass Cochran came to America about 1734 from County Armagh in Northern Ireland. He was eighteen and of Scottish descent. He married Sarah Hamilton of Marblehead, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Robert and Mary Hamilton. Glass and Sarah settled in Blandford, Massachusetts, in the northern part of the township, next to a large pond named in his honor, Cochran Pond. He died in 1795 and is buried there along with his wife and several family members in the old cemetery on Blandford Hill. He was the father of Robert, John, Susanna, Cornelius, Abner, Molly, Amos. and Glass. Amos, we assume, died before reaching adulthood, as we can find no further reference to him. The youngest son, Glass married Mehitable Fuller of Connecticut. Mehitable's family was the well established Fuller family of Massachusetts and Connecticut, descendents of Robert Fuller, who came to America in 1636. Glass and Mehitable "Hetty" were the parents of thirteen children, namely Nathaniel, Harper, Lydia, John, James, Juliet, Charles, William, Joseph Sidney, Henry, Harreson, Betsy, and Sarah. Only nine of these thirteen lived to marry and raise families of their own. Lydia, Juliet, Charles, and Harreson, all died as infants or young children. In 1803/ Glass joined a group of Massachusetts and Connecticut Pioneers in forming the Scioto Land company and the family settled in Franklin County in the newly formed State of Ohio, near what is now Worthington. Here Glass was elected Justice of the Peace, as was his father and brothers back in Blandford. He served, along with his sons, Nathaniel, Harper, and John, in the War of 1812. About 1817, the family moved westward again and settled in Palmyra Township in Knox County, lndiana. Glass died there in 1822. About this time, several of his children moved over into the newly formed County of Greene. Here they operated a grist mill on Doane's Creek in Taylor Township. William (COCHRAN) married Mary "Pol1y" BENNINGTON' Betsy married Rubin Bennington; James married Rosanna Manning; and Sarah married Obadiah Barker. Eventually, Nathaniel, William, Joseph Sidney, Henry, Betsy, and their respective families, along with their mother, Mehitable, traveled west by covered wagon to settle in Texas. Harper went to Arkansas, and John settled in Illinois. Only James and Sarah stayed behind in Greene County. There are now five and six generations of the Cochran and Barker families that have called Greene County home.

    Notes:

The son of William Hawthorne and Meleachy Cliborn. (Barbara Smith). Listed in the "1840 Decatur County Georgia Census Index " (Frances T. Ingmire, Mountain Press).

How, if at all, is he related to the family of W. B. and Elizabeth Hawthorn (1850 Decatur census, #837) and Mrs. N. Hawthorn (1850 Decatur census, #838)?

Joshua Timothy was the son of William Hawthorn and Meleachy Cliburn. William did serve in the Rev. War and I have proved his service. This is the same Hawthorn that the "Hawthorne Trail" in Florida and GA is named for as he moved there and settled that area.

According to newspaper accounts of the Hawthorne family, after Joshua Timothy died, Martha took all of her children and came to Texas with her two brothers, Joe and Lump, but no other information was given. This may not be true as I see you show that they died in GA or perhaps they did not stay in Texas but went back. I can send you more info on who they married if you are interested but I thought this since this is just a branch off your tree, you might not need that much information. If you do, will send it along.

Lizzie Hawthorne married my gr. grandfather, Thomas Harrison Holmes. We live today where they lived and raised their children. As you can see, the Hawthornes were rather prolific. They all married here and in this are of Texas (Newton-Jasper Counties), the world is full of Hawthornes.

  6. 15.  Elizabeth Morgan was born on 31 Dec 1830 in North Carolina (daughter of Daniel Morgan and Mary ???); died on 13 Dec 1902 in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Magnolia Springs Cemetery, Magnolia Springs, Jasper County, Texas.

    Notes:

Said by some to have been born in Surry County, NC, but no proof cited. This seems unlikely as the family was listed in Sampson County as of the 1830 census.

Carolyn Lockhart wrote that after the death of Sion Jones in Georgia "Elizabeth sold her land in Decatur County (ca 1868) and came to Texas. She and [her widowed sister] Dorcas Lee had about 9 children with them. Someone met them in Galveston and it was the first time she had ever seen an iron cook stove. She instructed her kids not to mention their Indian ancestry. She herself never mentioned it even though she always wore fringes on her dresses to remind her own self of her heritage. She was 61 when she died, never remarried and never filed a pension from Sion Jones CSA record."

In a letter from Carolyn Lockhart, she states that Elizabeth died in the home of her oldest son, Newton B. Jones. Like the Morgan's, the Jones family were also of Welsh ancestry. The Hawthorne family were neighbors in Georgia and also in Jasper County.

Ruby Boyett showed she died in 1897, but this can not be correct as (1) she had a daughter born in 1899 (2) she can be found on the 1900 census with her husband and children and (3) her tombstone is said to be inscribed 13 Dec 1902.
