    Per OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS "he was known as the Daniel Boone of his day, never tiring of being in the woods. He hunted wild game at every opportunity, and never was his larder empty of venison, turkey and squirrel. A nephew, A.V. White recalls seeing John and his brother-in-law, George Morris, coming home with two large turkey gobblers, with their feet tied together and a pole between their legs and their heads dragging.

    He loves to tell tall tales and was known as somewhat of a joker. He tells of the time his uncle, Jack White, shot a deer and thinking it was dead, ran up and grabbed it by the horns. The deer came up stomping and kicking Jack with its sharp hoofs. "Jacks feet were in pretty bad condition" chuckled John "but he was always getting in trouble. Once he caught a fawn and tied it to a tree with his shirt. When Jack got ready to go home home, it had broken loose and fled, taking Jack's shirt along." A dead pan joker, John White had such a reputation for tall tales that Andrew Lott told a newcomer Tom Pulliam, who started to repeat something John said, "anyone repeating anything John White says has to shell a a half a bushel of peanuts. Once when someone was bragging about his corn harvest, Johh said "Oh that's nothing. I had to haul half of mine into have room to windrow the rest."

    The Whites have lived all their married life on their farm in the Pinehill community where they raised their children and where they now have retired in their pleasant little house surrounded by tall pines and beautiful scenery.

    There are 23 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren (circa 1964).

  1. 8.  Henry Strickland White, Sr was born about 1812 in Georgia (son of Edward White and Elizabeth Strickland); died on 10 Feb 1886 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

    On the Sabine County 1854 Scholastic Census, H.S. White was shown as of household with five (5) children between the ages of 6 and 16 enrolled at School District No. 6. They were: Edward, Vardamenn, Mary, Hanibal, and Arrilla. Who was Arrilla, and who was her mother? Could this have been Hanzel, his daughter by Eliza Jones?

    Henry S and Mary E White (third wife) were among the 11 founding members of the First Baptist Church of Hemphill, all of whom gathered on the banks of the Housen Bayou, drawing up 12 articles of Faith and 24 articles of Decorum. Henry served as the clerk to the church, recording all church proceedings for a period of some 12 years (from 1858 to 1870), as a delegate to church conferences, and as the moderator of church proceedings. In November, 1868, he was ordained as a Deacon of the Church. The MINUTES 1858-1890 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HEMPHILL, TEXAS were transcribed and indexed by Di Ann Vick in 1982, and are available for purchase from both Ingmire Publications, 10166 Clairmont Dr St. Louis MO 63136 and Ericson Books 1614 Redbud St Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.

    In 1876, H S and Mary E White left the First Baptist Church and were among the founding members of the Antioch Baptist Church in the Gravel Hill Community of Sabine County. According to a plaque on the front of the Antioch Church, J. S. Lambert and J J Roundtree were the organizers. Other founding members included: George Conn, John Anderson, T.D. Burkhalter, John De Weese, L.W. Hoard, Hosie Baldree, Ann Mason, Sophie H. Wallace, Mrs. C.A. Hoard, C. Baldree

    Per the book "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" by White and Toole, "Henry S. White Sr. was Judge of Sabine County from 1869-1875, serving with Solomon Arthur. (They were called Chief Magistrates until the new State Constitution went into effect at the end of their term). Henry S. White was also a member of the Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge. As the White Plantation lay just west of Hemphill, he was one of the last of the "Paderos" for the return of run-a-way slaves."

    I have been unable to locate a CSA service record for Henry. It is probable that he was considered too old for service, he was almost 50 at the outbreak of the war.

    His tombstone indicates he was a Mason.

    Note in the 1920 Sabine County, Texas federal census, there was a 50 year old mulatto farmer named Jesse White (#594-616). He noted that his father was born in Mississippi and his mother in Georgia. What is his relationship, if any, to the other White's in Sabine County, Texas?

    Notes:

    Per "1850 Census Sabine County, Texas with added Family Information and Corrections," William Madison Davidson owned 16 slaves. Per OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY, TEXAS he fought along with his son-in-law Amazia Vardeman White in Company F, 11th Texas Infantry. He died on the way home, somewhere near Marshall, and the irony of it was that he volunteered after he was past the age of 55, in anothers place, in exchange for a slave.

    He was said by White and Toole to be the son of William "Squire Billy" DAVIDSON and Jane BIRDWELL, and a brother of Blackburn Davidson, who married Harriet Goodrich. White and Toole show him as a grandson of Wm. Davidson, b ca 1755, in N.C., lived to be 96. When members of his family loaded their wagons in 1849, and departed for Texas, never to return, the old grandfather, nearly blind, stood by the side of the road and waved until they were out of sight. He had begged to be taken to Texas with them. SABINE COUNTY GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, pps 84-87, contains details of various early Davidson families settlers in Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Carolinas. Gen. Samuel Houston was the grandson of a Margaret Davidson. Thomas Whitfiled Davidson, a Texas state senator and Lietut. Governor, was claimed as a relative of Jefferson Oliver Davidson of Sabine County (personal interview with Beulah Davis Hughes). (White and Toole, p 87).

    Other researchers show him instead as a son of William DAVIDSON (born 1779 Va, d. 1860 Texas) and Nancy ALBRIGHT (born 1779 Va), and an Uncle of Blackburn Davidson.

    Notes:

    White and Toole write that he "Rec'd a large Mexican grant of land in 1835, and gave 200 acres upon which Sabinetown was built, but in 1850 he is listed on the Sabine Parish (Many), Louisiana U.S. Census. Served in the War of 1812 from Louisiana." (White and Toole, p 63).

    The Sabinetown Cemetery index lists his service as taking place with the Kentucky Pvt 10 Regt LA Militia War of 1812.

    Kathy Casagranda notes that he is believed by some to be the son of Gideon Morris. He received 2,915 acres of land from a Mexican Land Grant on June 17, 1835. The Historical Marker in Sabinetown names him among the earliest settlers. (1850 Sabine Parish Census, p 78). Ann McElhaney does not think that he a son of Gideon Morris, as detailed in her notes below.

    Ann McElhaney,annmclpc@aol.com, a descendant of Shadrach's son Amon Perry Morris, supplied the following biographical notes about Shadrach and Mary Morris:

    Shadrach H Morris says on the census register that he was born in Kentucky. We know he was in Louisiana during the War of 1812.

    Bettye Wagstaff has a census note of a census in LA in 1810 that is handwritten which she may have had for many years which lists: Shadrack Morris, 1-male under 5, 1-male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 20-30 Other information says Bib Creek, waters of the Tangipoha River, now Tangipahoa Parish, LA

    84 Washington Parish 1810:
    Shadrack Morris: 1 male 10-15, 1 male 80-90; 1 femail 10-15; 1 female 40-50 lived in the area of Sunny Hill and present day Mt. Herman, LA Shadrach H Morris is likely out of the house as he was old enough to fight shortly thereafter in the War of 1812.

    We are told that he married Mary Sarah Nelson in Mississippi in 1822.

    In 1820 Washington Parish, LA:
    W.H. Morris: between the ages of 16-26 has a wife and two sons and a daughter
    Wm Wadkins(Watkins)-father of Alfred J L Watkins who marries Mary Drucilla Kemp(parents of Mary Ann Watkins who will marry Amon Morris
    Berry Wadkins(Watkins) brother to Alfred

    In 1820 on the East Baton Rouge, LA census: Shadrach Morris _ _ _ 2 1 /no females. This would be Shad Sr, then Shad jr either lives with him at this time with one other 26-45 male or Shad jr is somewhere else and two brothers are at home. The following is possible: In the county next to Baton Rouge is Iberville Parish. In Iberville there is a Martin Nelson with a daughter the age of Mary Sarah Nelson. There are no other Nelsons in the area, that possibly this is how they met. Perhaps our information is incorrect and they married in LA or perhaps these Nelsons moved to Mississippi and Shad followed in hot pursuit to marry Sarah Nelson.

    In 1830 I believe this is our Shadrach in Washington Parish, LA. The other Morris listed nearby are likely brothers as well as the Shadrach Sr who could be our Shad's father:

    Shadrack M Sr is between 80-90-which does exactly jive with the info on the 1810 census

    I am not certain that this completely demonstrates that Shad is not the son of Gideon Morris of Morristown, Tenn, but it is better evidence than anything else I am aware of us having. Gideon had a son named Shadrach, but we know he did not come south. Furthermore, the Morrisville folks deny there is any evidence that our Shad belongs to Gideon's group. There is some indication that there may be a connection between our Shad and Hamon Morris of Hamblen County, Tenn. Nevertheless if Shad said he was from Kentucky, that is all we have to go on for now. Our Shad could write and his signature is distinct so finding his signature anywhere is helpful.

    The Bradford Kemp (1764-1838) listed in this census is most likely the father of Mary Drucilla Kemp who married Alfred J L Watkins.

    1840 Natchitoches, LA: Shad and Mary Ann and 9 children. Also close in proximity and in the same Parish: G B(Green Berry) Watkins; A L(Alfred, Mary Ann's father)Watkins. Possible relations also present: Benjamin Morris-perhaps Shadrach's younger brother; John Nelson-perhaps Mary Sarah Nelson's brother.

    In 1850 in Sabine County, Texas: William W. Watkins(who is Green Berry Watkins' son); Amon and family including his mother-in-law, Mary Drucilla Kemp Watkins; Shad and Sarah and family.

    The 4 Smith girls who are living with Shad and Mary Sarah Morris are the daughters of Sarah's sister, Elizabeth Nelson who married John D. Smith. Both parents died. Shadrach and Sarah became the court-ordered guardians for the girls.
