Could she have also been called Alice? On the 1900 census, James Halbert, the father of Pole Mason, is shown as married to an Alice M. Maybe the is Dora Alice Mason? The ages match, and Dora Mason is said to be the mother of Napoleon Mansely Halbert. Napoleon appears to be named in honor of Dora's father. Also in the home at the time of the 1900 census was four year old William Halbert. Additionally, the 1910 San Augustine County, TX census has a Dora, the same as as Dora Mason would be, listed as the wife of William T. Conner. They have five children in their home, including a 14 year old Clarence Halbert, stepson. The WWI draft registration records shows that Clarence Halbert's full name was William Clarence Halbert...so this might be the same William Halbert that lived with James and Alice Halbert in Sabine County in 1900. Perhaps James Halbert died, or perhaps he and Dora separated and she remarried.

Dora married James Clyde Halbert on 21 Dec 1886 in Sabine County, Texas. James (son of William Washington "Dick" Halbert, Sr. and Mary Frances Allen) was born in Dec 1865 in Sabine County, Texas; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

1. Napoleon "Pole" Mansley Halbert was born on 25 Jan 1889 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 26 Feb 1930 in Texas; was buried in Halbert Cemetery (Joel Halbert Cemetery / Fox Hill Cemetery), Milam, Sabine County, Texas.

Notes:

"He was the son of William and Judith Mason. Was a member of Hood's Brigade in the Civil War and was Sheriff of Sabine County for several years." (White and Toole, p 36). His application for a confederate pension shows that he "was made a prisoner at Chr. Dec 3, 1863, discharged 1865." He further stated that he was born in Sabine County, and had been a resident for all of his life, "except for the war." He showed his P.O. as in Milam, and indicated he was a farmer. He served from 1861-1865 in Company I, 1rst Texas Regiment, Infantry as a private. He made his application on July 9, 1909 before County Judge J. H. McGown and witnesses W R Davidson and T B Davidson. They both testified that they served in the same company.

Billy Fussell and Bobby Wood, great-grandsons write that "N. B. and his brother Marquis De Lafayette Mason both served in Hood's Brigade, enlisting on April 1, 1862, in San Augustine. L.M. (that's the way he is listed in his war records) died from wounds received at the battle of Chickamauga Sept 19-21. N.B. was captured and taken as prisoner of war to Camp Douglas a notorious Prison Camp near Chicago, Illinois. He remained there until the end of the war and was exchanged at New Orleans on May 23,1865. He came home and married his brother's widow, Mary Terry Mason, and together they had 13 children."

Napolean married Mary Bethany "Susan" Terry about 1865. Mary was born in Jun 1848 in Georgia; died about 1923 in San Augustine County, Texas; was buried in Mason Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

In her transcription of the Mason Cemetery, Kay Parker McCary writes that she was married first to Marcus DeLafayette Mason, who was killed in the Civil War. He was a brother of her second husband, Napoleon Bonaparte Mason. The 1880 census shows her as born in Alabama, but in 1900 and in 1910 it was shown that she was born in Georgia.

Notes:

Dale Rubel shows him as the son of Job Mason and Anna Cole. A Job Mason was living next to James Mason (possible brother of William) at the time of the 1850 Sabine County, Texas census.

Judith Denman instead shows him as a son of David Mason and Isabella Teague, and brother of John and James.

INFO: Came to Texas through Alabama with brothers John & James. Received land grant of one league and one labor and served as Sheriff & Tax Assessor of Sabine County, TX.

MARRIAGE: "Alabama Marriages Early to 1825" by Jordon R. Dodd & Norman L. Moyes. Wife's name listed as Juda instead of Judith.
