    N. H. "Dick" McGown

    Newton Hannibal McGown, 88, of Hemphill died Thursday, Sept. 21, 1995, at Medical Center Hospital in Nacogdoches.

    McGown was born May 10, 1907, in Sabine County as a son of the late J. J. McGown and Lizzie (Stroud) McGown and had been a lifelong resident of the area. He was a retired surveyor and served with the National Guard in 1944 and 1945.

    Survivors: wife, Dorothy McGown of Hemphill; sons, Everett Harlan McGown of Atlanta, Edward McGown of Hemphill; and Ellis H. McGown and George W. McGown both of San Augustine; daughters, Mary Joyce Golden of Lufkin and Katy Ruth Newton of San Augustine; sisters, Eula Coleman of Hemphill and Pearl Jones of Newton County; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Glenn D. Morton officiating. Interment was at Pine Hill Cemetery in Sabine County.

    Pallbearers were grandsons.

    Lela Bell Eddins

    Lela Bell Eddins, 92, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Twin Lakes Rehabilitation and Care Center in San Augustine.

    Mrs. Eddins was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Gregg County as a daughter of the late Charlie and Lucy Clegg Smith and had been a longtime resident of the Sabine and San Augustine Counties area. She was a homemaker and a member fo the Order of the Eastern Star and the Baptist Church.

    Survivors: sons, Edward McGown and wife Betty of Hemphill and Ellis McGown and wife Linda of San Augustine; daughters, Mary Golden of Lufkin and Katy Newton and husband Wayne of San Augustine; brother, Jim Clegg of Bronson; grandchildren, Shane, Todd, Jimmy, Janiece, Tammy, Chad, Amber, Crystal, Michelle, Georgette, Nikki, and Travis; and numerous great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Eddins; sons, John McGown and George McGown; and a grandson, John Hanks.

    Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Gordon Simmons officiating. Interment followed at Centerview Cemetery near Pineland.

    Pallbearers: Eugene Clegg, Shane McGown, Todd McGown, Jimmy Woods, Weldon Thomas and Tommy Newton.

    Services were under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.
