  1. 1.  Gladys Powell was born on 22 Mar 1906 in Stephens County, Oklahoma; died on 19 Jan 1995 in Roswell, Chaves County, New Mexico; was buried in Duncan Municipal Cemetery, Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma.

    Notes:

Lynell Cordell's brother, Harold, started to school at Payne School. His teacher was Gladys Payne, wife of Dukey Payne. Their children were Virginia and Tommy. Gladys also had a brother, Bill Powell, who taught school both in Payne and Arthur, therefore it is assumed her maiden name was POWELL.

Gladys was said to be related to Lily Rowe, wife of Emory Howard Gentry; however, the connection, if any, would appear to be remote.

Dukey died in 1953, with Gladys surviving until 1995. She was said to have remarried after his death. She and Dukey, however, are buried side by side with a double tombstone. Above her name, DIEFENBAKER is also engraved. This was her name at the time of her death, as noted on the SSDI entry below, and was the surname of her second husband, Roy Diefenbaker. Lyn Cordell recalls that Roy worked in a western clothing store here in town and wore what he sold, so he was the best dressed cowboy around!

(Research):This MIGHT be Gladys with her family at the time of the 1910 and 1920 census. It is noted that she did have an older brother, Wilmer, who might be the Bill Powell she taught with at Arthur School. More research should be done to verify that this is the same Gladys Powell.
