    Two killed in separate grinding auto crashes

    Two persons were killed and a third remained in critical condition following one of the bloodiest four days on Tuscola county roads in recent memory.

    Grant Wesley Ball, 59, of 6806 E. Cass City Road, became the county's seventeenth traffic fatality of 1976 Saturday night when he died from multiple injuries suffered in a car-truck crash at the intersection of Mushroom and Crawford Roads late Thursday evening.

    Caro State Police reported Ball was northbound on Crawford Road when his pickup was struck in the driver's side by a car driven by Josephine OLEWSKI, 68, of Decker?.Police said Ball apparently did not stop for the intersection?the force of the crash threw both vehicles into a field?.Ball was taken to Hills and Dales General Hospital reportedly suffering from a punctured lung and several broken ribs. He remained in critical condition until Saturday night when an attempt was made to transfer him to a Saginaw hospital. Ball reportedly died shortly after 9 p.m. en route. Mrs. Olewski was listed in satisfactory condition at Marlette Community Hospital. The accident took place at 4:15 p.m.

    Grant Wesley Ball was born February 4, 1917, in Elkland township, son of the late John and Maggie Pitcher BALL. He married Miss Laura CROCKER, July 15, 1938, in Cass City. He was a co-owner and president of Hunt Construction Company of Cass City, and was a member of the Michigan Road Builders Association. He was also a member of Salem United Methodist church and chairman of the Pastor Parish Board. He was a member of the Gavel Club. He was also a former Evergreen township trustee.

    Survivors included his widow: two sons, Wesley of Reese and Donald of Cass City; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were scheduled Wednesday afternoon from Little's Funeral Home with Rev. Eldred Kelley, pastor of Salem United Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Elkland cemetery.

    Grant married Laura Molly Crocker on 15 Jul 1938 in Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan. Laura (daughter of Louis F. Crocker and Clementina Merchant) was born on 24 Aug 1917 in Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan; died on 2 Jan 2006 in Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan; was buried in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan.     Volume 23 of the Striffler-Benkelman Broadcast, dated September 7, 1963, noted that Mr. and Mrs. Grant Ball (Laura Crocker) were given a surprise party in their home by the E. U. B. "Golden Rule" Sunday School Class July 15 in honor of their silver wedding anniversary.
