John James Kucera

John James Kucera, of Herriman, Utah, passed away on May 10, 2015 at the age of 78. He was born on April 5, 1937 in Fillmore County, Nebraska to John J. Kucera and Alice M. (Svec) Kucera. He married Elaine Sharon Ackland on November 22, 1961 at Saint Mary's Cathedral in Lincoln. John served four years in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1962. He retired from L-3 Communications in Salt Lake City in 1999. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish in Copperton, Utah for many years, where he served as an usher, member of the parish council, and as parish administrator for four years.

John was preceded in death by his parents, son Richard, and sisters Marilyn Zank and Joanne Vasina of Lincoln. He is survived by wife Elaine, sons David (Leslie Robinson) of Del Mar, Calif., James Kucera of Murray, Utah, and William Kucera of Herriman, grandson Matthew Kucera of Del Mar, and granddaughters Alyssa Kucera of Del Mar and Erica Webb of West Jordan, Utah.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at Immaculate Conception Parish in Copperton, Utah, with a viewing at the church one hour prior to services. A private inurnment will be held at Murray City Cemetery, Murray, Utah. Please visit, www.goffmortuary.com

Married:
Barbora and Frank left Bohemia with their five children in June, 1878. They settled in Nebraska where they were pioneer farmers in both Saline and Fillmore counties. To them were born 17 children, eight of whom survived to reach maturity. Barbora told her children and grandchildren stories about pioneer life. One of the favorite stories was about a family they knew well that lived in a home that was half dugout and half soddie. The mother made a large pot of soup for dinner. The family were seated around the table to be served, but before it could be ladled out, a snake fell threw the soddy roof and into the soup. (Milligan, pp 284 - 285).

Vaclav Svec and Marie Suda were early pioneers in Fillmore County. They lived all their married life on the farm which Vaclav homesteaded. The farm, still in the family, is one mile west of Milligan.

Vaclav Svec was born October 16, 1841, to Josef and Barbora Kippova or Kibova Svec in Zichovice, okres Stasecky, Bohemia. When he was 12, his mother died so he had to make his way in the world while still a young boy. He took up the trade of a cabinent maker. He came to America in 1869, following his trade of carpenter and farmer for a time in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Vaclav came to Nebraska two years later...filing the homestead entry at the Beatrice Land Office on April 17, 1871.

Marie Suda came to this country with her parents in 1868...(her) first home in America was Chicago, where the family remained until 1871. Leaving Chicago after the great fire, her parents, Frantisek and Karolina Klokanova Suda, homesteaded in Section 2 of Glengary Township.

He was the second son of Josef and Marie Schultz nee Buchar, a family of eleven children, born in Zahajske Lhoty [Zalesni Lhota] Okres Jilemic, Kraj, Jicin, Bohemia about 40 miles northeast of Praha. He served in the German Army for six years listed as Franz Scholz. (Milligan, p. 477). Kathleen Peterson notes that their last name was listed as Scholz in Nebraska records, and that he farmed the E/2 of the NW/4, section 35-16N-5E, Chester Precinct, Saunders County, NE. This 80 acres was bought in 1883 for $1000 and sold in 1890 to Mary Kaspar for $2675. This farm was apparently originally owned by (Frank's brother?) Joseph Scholz (Sulc/Schultz?) and wife Maria.

Frank married Mary Fujan about 1879 in Prague, Saunders County, Nebraska. Mary (daughter of Frantisek Fujan and Marie Koziskova) was born before 1862 in Koryta, Plzen-Sever, Plzensk? kraj, Bohemia; died on 12 May 1929 in Huron, Beadle County, South Dakota; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Beadle County, South Dakota. Frank Schultz, Sr. married Mary Fujan in 1879 at the Catholic Church in Prague, Nebraska. They farmed with a yoke of oxen four miles south of Prague. Eight children were born to this union. In 1890, the family moved to Milligan about hone and one-half miles south of town. They farmed here until 1908 when they bought land near Huron, South Dakota. The entire family moved to Huron except two daughters: Anna (Mrs. Joseph SVEC) and Frances (Mrs. Frank M. SVEC) (Milligan, p. 478).
