For many years, Howard and Florence farmed near Exeter until purchasing a McDonald's restaurant franchise in 1974 in Norfolk. They also owned stores in Columbus, York, and O'Neill. They lived in Norfolk and Columbus for several years. After Howard's death in 1987, Florence returned to Exeter.

Florence was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 218 in Exeter. She enjoyed cooking and her potato salad, cream puffs, meatballs with alphabet soup, and green kale were family favorites. Florence enjoyed being with her grandsons and great-grandchildren and attending their activities.
